A neural model for the prediction of pathogenic genomic variants in Mendelian diseases
The detection of pathogenic genomic variants associated with genetic or cancer diseases represents an open problem in the context of the Genomic Medicine. In particular the detection of mutations in the non-coding regions of human genome represents a particularly challenging machine learning problem, since the number of neutral variants largely outnumber the pathogenic ones, thus resulting in highly imbalanced classification problems. We applied neural networks to the detection of pathogenic regulatory genomic variants in Mendelian diseases and we showed that leveraging imbalance-aware techniques and deep learning algorithms, we can obtain state-of-the-art results, using a less complex model than those proposed in literature for this challenging prediction task
Controllable fabrication of aligned carbon nanotubes by pulsed plasma: selective positioning and electrical transport phenomena
Selective growth of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at low temperature by pulsed plasma on Si3N4/Si substrates patterned by metallic platinum has been demonstrated. Field emission and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have shown that platinum does not support CNT growth, so that nanotubes can selectively grow on substrates patterned by platinum. This feasible fabrication method has been used to measure the electrical resistivity of as-aligned CNT film perpendicular to the-tube axis without a complex postsynthesis manipulation. The prepared samples show a monotonic decrease in the resistivity with increasing temperature. We propose that the transport is governed by the formation of crossed junctions of nanotubes in the mat. Giving Voice to Employees and Spreading Information within the Firm: the Manner Matters
Economists are paying increasing attention to “factors” in job satisfaction. Job satisfaction can affect productivity, effort, absenteeism, and quits. This paper analyzes data from the “Working in Britain, 2000” questionnaire; the results confirm the effects of individual features on job satisfaction, as highlighted in previous studies. The analysis shows that job satisfaction can be enhanced by spreading information within the organization and by giving voice to employees, but the management must choose communication strategies perceived as reliable by the employees.Human Resource Management,Job satisfaction, gift exchange, employees’ voice, procedural utility

2004. Agave americana var. oaxacensis and the icon of Valentini (1719). Bot. Complut. 28: 101-103. In this article we will analyse some picture from Valentini (1719), that correspond to the Agave L. genus, and we think that correspond to Agave americana L. var. oaxacensis Gentry

Relationship between the optical and mechanical properties of fluorinated amorphous carbon thin films
Fluorinated amorphous carbon (a-C:H:F) thin films were grown from CH4/CF4/Ar gas mixtures using a 13.56 MHz radiofrequency (RF) plasma source. The effect of fluorine incorporation on the mechanical properties of the films was investigated by depth sensing indentation, while Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and ellipsometry measurements were exploited to study their vibrational, structural and optical properties. While raising fluorine content in the film, visible Raman results show that the sp(2) carbon sites undergo a gradual ordering into graphitic clusters, which are responsible for a higher optical absorption. Nanoindentation measurements showed decreased elasticity of the film, as well as decreased hardness upon fluorine incorporation. A clear correlation between the mechanical properties and the optical constants was found as a function of fluorine content in the film. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
