Improved photomeson model for interactions of cosmic ray nuclei

    No full text
Photohadronic interactions are important for the sources and the transport of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). Current state-of-the-art cosmic ray transport simulations handle nuclear disintegration at energies of the Giant Dipole Resonance at a more sophisticated level, as well as the photohadronic interactions of nucleons in the high-energy regime above the pion production threshold. However, the interactions of nuclei above the pion production threshold are commonly modeled by treating the nucleus as a superposition of free nucleons-ignoring the effect of the nuclear medium. We construct an improved, inclusive model for the photomeson regime for nuclei with A ≤ 56 by employing more accurate, data-driven parametrizations of the interaction cross section, the fragmentation of the primary nucleus and the inclusive pion production cross section that directly affects the production of astrophysical neutrinos. We apply our results to two multi-messenger scenarios (Tidal Disruption Events and Gamma-Ray Bursts) in which photonuclear interactions in the photomeson regime are the dominant cooling process for the highest energy cosmic rays. While we find moderate changes to the mass composition of UHECRs, the astrophysical neutrino fluxes exhibit a significant (factor of a few) reduction compared to the naive superposition of free nucleons for sources of UHECR nuclei with a populated cascade. The numerical code implementing the model has been made publicly available, which facilitates the integration of our results in similar frameworks

The objective of this work is to evaluate the perception of thermal comfort that students have in building 10 of the Universidad de la Costa located in the city of Barranquilla. For the investigation the methods for the thermal comfort evaluation are analyzed, selecting the Steady-State methodology of Fanger according to the ASHRAE 55 Standard. With the application of the surveys, the thermal sensation that the students had in the building was evaluated, which was preferably fresh and thermal acceptability where 87% responded satisfactorily to indoor climate conditions in classrooms. It was also obtained that the perception of inner thermal comfort is between 21.1 ° C and 23 ° C of temperature. With the results obtained, recommendations are issued to ensure that students feel thermal comfort and the proper regulation of air conditioning systems.BALBIS MOREJON, MILEN-will be generated-orcid-0000-0002-8053-6651-600Noya-Sambrano,

Energy saving measures, in the design air conditioning systems, are crucial in the development of energy schemes with rational energy consumption. Traditionally, integrated buildings systems have been assessed individually to optimize the energy performance, however they have different parameters that affect energy performance that demands the use of detailed analysis using dynamic simulation. This paper is focused on compare an air conditioning system to be implemented in educational buildings in warm-climate, considering energy schemes provide for a constant air volume (CAV) flow system with a water chiller, while the other integrates a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system. Adding in each case dedicated outdoor air System (DOAS) units. Energy consumption achieved by each AC system is obtained considering the configuration achieving energy savings of 40% of the annual electricity demand for cooling. Finally, the use of DOAS represents an increase of 20% of total electricity consumption.BALBIS MOREJON, MILEN-will be generated-orcid-0000-0002-8053-6651-600Silva-Ortega, J ICastro-Peña,

This study integrates different techniques to analyze some issues of the air conditioning system of a commercial establishment. A thermographic camera is used to assess the temperature profile in the area covered by the air conditioning system and also to detect the higher temperature spots. The air conditioning system of the facility is simulated using the software Trnsys to estimate the indoor temperature and the thermal load profile. Afterward, using computer-aided design, a model of the air circulation in the thermal zone is developed, which is simulated using the finite element method to obtain the temperature profile in the area. As a result, a new operational scheme of the air conditioning that improves the temperature profile is proposed.Madrigal, José A-74fc42b9-1d55-4218-ac68-a7fa1a4f8283-0Cabello Eras, Juan Jose-0000-0003-0949-0862-600Sagastume Gutierrez, Alexis-0000-0003-0188-7101-600Balbis Morejon, Milen-0000-0002-8053-6651-60

Age-dependent changes in protein incorporation into collagen-rich tissues of mice by in vivo pulsed SILAC labelling

    No full text
Collagen-rich tissues have poor reparative capacity that predisposes to common age-related disorders such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. We used in vivo pulsed SILAC labelling to quantify new protein incorporation into cartilage, bone, and skin of mice across the healthy life course. We report dynamic turnover of the matrisome, the proteins of the extracellular matrix, in bone and cartilage during skeletal maturation, which was markedly reduced after skeletal maturity. Comparing young adult with older adult mice, new protein incorporation was reduced in all tissues. STRING clustering revealed changes in epigenetic modulators across all tissues, a decline in chondroprotective growth factors such as FGF2 and TGFβ in cartilage, and clusters indicating mitochondrial dysregulation and reduced collagen synthesis in bone. Several pathways were implicated in age-related disease. Fewer changes were observed for skin. This methodology provides dynamic protein data at a tissue level, uncovering age-related molecular changes that may predispose to disease

    No full text
The present thesis considers the topic of English as a Lingua Franca as it is perceived and experienced by three groups: the ELF research community, ELT professionals, and ELF users themselves. This thesis first presents an overview of the theoretical foundations of ELF research, identifying key topics with which the ELF research community has grappled in recent decades. In order to determine how much closer the ELT community has gotten to aligning teaching policy, practices, and goals to students' specific needs and expectations, sociolinguistic research in the form of seven semi-structured interviews was conducted with L2 English speakers who use ELF to live, work, and study in their daily lives, and the ELT professionals tasked with developing their English skills in the classroom. The content of these interviews is then analyzed with regard to the specific needs and expectations of ELF users and the concerns of ELT professionals, followed by a discussion of the key issues uncovered in these interviews in light of the theoretical background of ELF research. The author provides suggestions for further research aimed at improving the ELT community's role in developing ELF proficiency in the expanding circle.
