Miss L. Lutton, Miss L. Harrison, and me [Seiko Ishida]
L. Lutton, L. Harrison and Seiko Ishida, standing on a brick, are photographed outside of blk. 1, bldg. 13, apt. 1. under Department of Education sign. Note next to photograph in album reads, "We three of 21-15 classes; Miss L. Lutton, Miss L. Harrison, and me [Seiko Ishida]. April 1944." Photograph from "Seiko Ishida's photo album" (csufu_sc_0364), page 64.The Japanese American Relocation Collection is composed of ephemera related to the relocation program during World War II. Items include the official government report of Manzanar Relocation Center, a photo album, post-war activism materials related to preserving and remembering the camps, various clippings, and documents. The strength of this collection is found in its many perspectives on the controversial relocation program and how it has been presented since World War II

Incorporating knowledge of secondary structures in a L-system-based encoding for protein folding
An encoding scheme for protein folding on lattice models, inspired by parametric L-systems, was proposed. The encoding incorporates problem domain knowledge in the form of predesigned production rules that capture commonly known secondary structures: α-helices and β-sheets. The ability of this encoding to capture protein native conformations was tested using an evolutionary algorithm as the inference procedure for discovering L-systems. Results confirmed the suitability of the proposed representation. It appears that the occurrence of motifs and sub-structures is an important component in protein folding, and these sub-structures may be captured by a grammar-based encoding. This line of research suggests novel and compact encoding schemes for protein folding that may have practical implications in solving meaningful problems in biotechnology such as structure prediction and protein folding
The Dynamical Nightwatch's Problem Solved by the Autonomous Micro-Robot Khepera
Löffler A, Klahold J, Rückert U. The Dynamical Nightwatch's Problem Solved by the Autonomous Micro-Robot Khepera. In: Hao J-K, Lutton E, Ronald E, Schoenauer M, Snyers D, eds. Selected Papers of the 3rd European Conference on Artificial Evolution (AE97). Vol 1363. Nimes, France: Springer-Verlag; 1998: 303-313.In this paper, we present the implementation, both in a simulator
and in a real-robot version, of an efficient solution to the so-called
dynamical nightwatch’s problem on the micro-robot Khepera. The problem
consists mainly in exploring a previously unknown environment while
detecting, registering and recognizing light sources which may dynamically
be turned on and off. At the end of each round a report is requested
from the robot. Therein we made use of an agent-based approach and
applied a self-organizing feature map in order to refine some of the behaviour

Pilgrimage and travel writing in early sixteenth-century England: the pilgrimage accounts of Thomas Larke and Robert Langton
By 1500 more than 500 written accounts of the Jerusalem pilgrimage alone had been produced in the West, and yet such works continued to be written and, increasingly, printed. How did these works retain their popularity, who was writing them and why? To address these questions, this article compares two early sixteenth-century English printed pilgrim guidebooks. It examines their distinctive features, charts their authors’ careers and social and professional networks, and identifies, for the first time, the author of The Pylgrymage of Sir Richarde Guylforde, printed by Richard Pynson in 1511. It reveals the different ways in which two educated and eminently well-connected clerics adapted a conventional literary genre to address shared concerns and interests. Both works demonstrate how humanist learning, religious reformism, heresy, and new ideas about the nature and purpose of travel were reshaping religiously orthodox conceptions of pilgrimage before the Reformation
(920192101) / SudocSudocFranceF
