Development of multi-layer crystal detector and related front end electronics

    No full text
A crystal (diamond) particle detector has been developed and tested, whose constitute elements are a multi-layer polycrystalline diamond and a pick-up system capable of collecting in parallel the charge produced in the layers. The charge is read with a charge-to-voltage amplifier (5–6 mV/fC) realized with bipolar junction transistors in order to minimize the effect of the detector capacitance. The tests performed with cosmic rays and at the beam test facility of Frascati with 500 MeV electrons in single electron mode operation have shown that a detector with 4–5 layers of 250 μm thickness each and 9 mm2 active area exhibits an upper limit of 150 ps time resolution for minimum ionizing particles at an operating voltage of about 350 V

    Hydroelectrolytic Disorders

    No full text
Maintaining body fluid and electrolyte balance is of paramount importance for normal functioning. Any alteration in this balance falls under the definition of “hydroelectrolytic disorders.”

    Fever of Unknown Origin

    No full text
The term fever of unknown origin (FUO) indicates febrile illnesses with a temperature above 38.3 °C for which an etiological diagnosis has not yet been formulated after 3 days of hospitalization or after three specialist visits. Certainly, in this context, the clinical laboratory provides essential elements to guide the etiological diagnosis

    Biomarkers of Inflammation

    No full text
Phlogosis, or inflammation, is an innate defense mechanism that our organism activates in response to various stimuli. Phlogosis is characterized by chemical mediators that play a fundamental role in various phases, from initiation to development and extinction or maintenance. Phlogosis markers are generally nonspecific because their levels increase during inflammation due to different causes. Therefore, their evaluation provides a general picture of the patient’s clinical condition

Diabetes Mellitus: From Definition to Therapy

    No full text
This chapter provides an in-depth description of the various types of diabetes mellitus, from the definition to the classification, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy. In addition, a description of glucose metabolism will be provided to facilitate the understanding of the diabetic disease

    Metabolic Syndrome

    No full text
Metabolic syndrome is a biochemical-clinical condition characterized by resistance to insulin action associated with a proinflammatory and prothrombotic state. It represents an important cardiovascular risk factor with a constantly increasing incidence in the general population; therefore, its early detection is fundamental to implement preventive interventions. This chapter describes the main characteristics of metabolic syndrome and the criteria used to diagnose it
