L. Jackson Newell served on the Utah Humanities Council from 2006-2012. His career included being a professor, dean, and college president, the latter at Deep Springs College (where he attended as an undergraduate). He talks about his memories of people and experiences from his time with Utah Humanities, including how the Venture (Clemente) program came about. He played a vital role in its formation and taught courses for several years. He co-edited with Jean Cheney and others Hope, Heart, and the Humanities: How a Free College Course is Changing Lives, which tells the story of the Clemente and Venture courses. He also shared the history of how the Zion Canyon Mesa came about, including the role of his deceased wife, Linda K.
