Dissertation thesis (Ph.D.) Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism. Lecturer: Doc. Mgr. et MgA. Filip Lab, Ph.D. Abstract In this dissertation, I am mainly focusing on photographic social network Instagram. It is the photograph that plays a crucial role in shaping the awareness of one's own identity and belonging to a community. Through photographs, on the one hand, we perceive the world and store our individual (Van Dijck, 2005) as well as our collective memory (Pink, 2011). On the other hand, photographs serve as a means of self-expression (Tinkler, 2008). Moreover, today's time is greatly fragmented, discontinuous, and episodic, which, on the other hand, leads human individuals to constantly legitimize themselves as unique and authentic individuals (Bauman, 2002). Furthermore, this constant communication via photographs requires a continual adaptation to the media messages, which puts an increased emphasis on visual communication as a field of social sciences, tightly connected to media studies. In short, the main goal of this dissertation is to introduce an analysis..

    Representation of journalists in videogames

    No full text
The Representation of Journalists in Videogames aims to find out how do videogame developers represent journalists in the mainstream videogames. The analysis is based on five case studies of various videogames but it also includes sequels and prequels of the selected games. The author of this thesis analyzes nine videogame journalists which can be differentiated into several categories: investigative reporters, photojournalists, paparazzis, radio and TV reporters and hosts of various television shows. Their behavior is not the only aspect this thesis analyzes because their visual appearance is also fully in the hands of the game developers. This thesis proves that the videogame journalists are sometimes depicted stereotypically but if so, it is always for a reason. Videogame developers do not always use this sort of depictions and can even accurately describe journalistic practice and behavior. Journalism is always better described if the journalist is a heroic protagonist of their videogame. If they are villains, it is often described using various negative stereotypes

Title: Modular System for Distributed User Data Management Author: Filip Pavliš, Author's email: [email protected] Department: Department of Distributed and Dependable Systems Supervisor: Mgr. Pavel Ježek, Department of Distributed and Dependable Systems Abstract: The main objective of this project was to create a multiplatform modular system for distributed data management. The system supports both local and remote accessible data storage. Therefore a part of the solution is also a server for remote data access. System also provides parallel usage of a local and remote storage which guarantees that the storage is accessible also when connection to server is lost. In this case, system is capable to synchronize changes between the server and a client. A client can use multiple instances of his storage and our system is able to synchronize them through central server. The system provides abstraction over data model to separate plugin developers from its specific behavior. As practical preview of system usability was created an extension application called TuaLoca. The application will contain implementation of preview plugins and basic user interaction. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is primarily concerned with environmental photography. The theoretical part frames the presented thesis mainly through the history of Czech documentary photography which is focused on environmental issues, but it also deals with the definition of the genre of documentary photography, moreover it articulates how photography affects the perception of the world around us. The practical part of this thesis represents environmental photography through a set of documentary photographs, which aimed to capture the current state of the Czech countryside. The ensemble acts as a testimony to the daily routine of the locals on a family farm in the village of Krchlebská Lhota in the district of Kutná Hora. Through the photographic collection, the author of this thesis tried to document what was left of the traditional village life. These photographs show regular tasks - cater for animals, feeding and killing of animals, work in the garden, repairs on the holding or work in the workroom. The photographs further document not only relationships between the locals, but also relationships between humans and animals. Overall, the presented thesis might be considered to be a contribution to the realm of environmental photography
