Direct evidence of extensive diversity of HIV-1 in Kinshasa by 1960
No full textHuman immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) sequences that pre-date the recognition of AIDS are critical to defining the time of origin and the timescale of virus evolution. A viral sequence from 1959 (ZR59) is the oldest known HIV-1 infection. Other historically documented sequences, important calibration points to convert evolutionary distance into time, are lacking, however; ZR59 is the only one sampled before 1976. Here we report the amplification and characterization of viral sequences from a Bouin's-fixed paraffin-embedded lymph node biopsy specimen obtained in 1960 from an adult female in Léopoldville, Belgian Congo (now Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)), and we use them to conduct the first comparative evolutionary genetic study of early pre-AIDS epidemic HIV-1 group M viruses. Phylogenetic analyses position this viral sequence (DRC60) closest to the ancestral node of subtype A (excluding A2). Relaxed molecular clock analyses incorporating DRC60 and ZR59 date the most recent common ancestor of the M group to near the beginning of the twentieth century. The sizeable genetic distance between DRC60 and ZR59 directly demonstrates that diversification of HIV-1 in west-central Africa occurred long before the recognized AIDS pandemic. The recovery of viral gene sequences from decades-old paraffin-embedded tissues opens the door to a detailed palaeovirological investigation of the evolutionary history of HIV-1 that is not accessible by other method

No full textThis thesis looks at the Christian thought and themes found in works by Gilbert Keith Chesterton.The author discusses Chesterton’s verbal trading of blows with famous contemporaries such as H.G Wells and more often, Bernard Shaw.Chesterton made arguments regarding the first World War, domestic difficulties, patriotism, imperialism, evolution to name a few of the matters the author describes Chesterton’s viewpoints on, illustrated through examining arguments made between Chesterton and Bernard Shaw through contemporary journalism. The author then focuses on commentary Chesterton made on contemporary thinkers who condemned orthodoxy and argues that those contradictory findings made my Chersterdon’s own observations led him to argue in favor of Christianity and the author argues led Chesterdon to become an important and influential writer and propagandist for Traditional Christian thought.

The density, construction and drag coefficient of electrostatic volcanic ash aggregates.
No full textRecent laboratory experiments have demonstrated that electrostatic charges generated during the fragmentation of volcanic pumice cause rapid aggregation of the silicate particles produced. Here, we present measurements of the mass and component particle size distribution of individual, electrostatically bound aggregates produced during these experiments. Particles produced by fracturing pumice aggregated as they fell ∼1.5 m within an enclosed fall chamber. Aggregate mass measurements indicate aggregate densities of ∼200 kg m−3 or less. The component particle size analysis demonstrates exponential-type cumulative distributions which are dominated (on a volume basis) by particles ∼10–40 μm in diameter and contain few particles >70 μm. By representing these particles as disks of 5 μm thickness the calculated aggregate densities are in agreement with those derived from the aggregate mass measurements and indicate a relatively constant aggregate density with size (in contrast with previous results from fall velocities). Combining the density measurements with fall velocity data allows the drag coefficient of aggregates to be determined. Empirical equations developed to describe the particle size distribution within aggregates are used to derive relative aggregation coefficients for the electrostatic aggregation process. Our results can be used within numerical models of volcanic plumes in order to improve their representation of electrostatic aggregation processes

It is with great pride that we, the administration team at Gilbert Paterson
Community School, have served you over the past year. At times the 2001-02
school year has been difficult and at times exciting. But together we have grown
as a community to become caring, concerned and compassionate citizens.
The events of September 11, 2001 brought a sudden realization that we in
Lethbridge do not live in isolation from the rest of the world. In spite of this
unrest and uncertainty, there has never been a more favourable time in this
great nation of ours. Young Canadians have educational and lifelong opportunities
abound. The choices presented can be mind-boggling, as technology
has created a limitless boundary to our imagination. Yet, it is reality, which
forces us to become strong citizens. Emerson said, “It is one of the most
beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another
without helping himself’. Young Canadians like yourselves must take the
opportunities and advantages you have to work hard and make Lethbridge,
Alberta, Canada and the World a community of caring, concerned and compassionate
citizens just as you have done at Paterson.

On August 22 & 23, 2001, 22 students and 16 teachers
participated in a Leadership Retreat at Gilbert Paterson
Community They painted, ate, played games, ate, designed
logos, ate, had a fashion show, ate, played ninjas, and got to
know each other really well. The Ninjas in the Dark game got
pretty crazy according to the stories the next morning. But
they sure learned how to have fun and how to be good leaders
for the years to come!

Turkey Trot 2001
On October 5, 2001 ,the Grade 8 Leadership class
lead students at GPCS in a TURKEY TROT. Both the
elementary and middle level students participated in
the event that morning. Students were to partner up
and then estimate the time it would take them to circle
the school yard TWICE. The person(s) who walked,
ran, skipped or whatever closest to their estimated
time won— YOU GUESSED IT-- a turkey for

October 10-12,2001
Oct. 10- Mr. Boulet gathered his group
outside of GPCS. Along with Mrs.
Lysak and Mrs. King, they boarded a
bus for Writing-On-Stone with none
other than Mr. T. Spackman driving!
Did they know what they were in for?
Day One:winds calm but cool. Students
set up camp in designated areas and then
explored while the 3 fierce leaders,
Boulet, King and Lysak lunched. One
group returned from their explorations
to find that a few birds had chewed their
way into their food boxes. Sure nice of
them to share with the locals!.
With snacks in hand to feed Mr. Boulet
and themselves, the students were lead
on a hike around the park. They saw
beautiful hoodoos and land features,
cool ancient writings and SNAKES! Yep!
Having only heard stories about snakes
and slitheries, the group actually saw a
rattle snake crawling around in his hole.
That night the wind shook the tents
while the coyotes howled while they
slept.

Day Two: windy, rainy, cold- The park
officer came by with her bus and took
the group on an official tour of the
Writing On Stone park. She told stories
about the native people who use to live
on the land and pointed out the different
writings left behind. Once back at the
campsite, the group played Capture the
Flag and explored the hoodoos nearby.
Johnny, however, tried desperately to
please his team and ended up with a
sprained ankle. Needless to say, he had
to get Mr. Boulet to give him a piggy
back ride back to the campsite where he
was attended to by Nurse Lysak.
That night, after roasting marshmallows
and singing campfire songs, they fell
asleep to the howling of the coyotes and
the snoring of their leader, Mr.
Boulet......or was it Mrs. Lysak????
Day Three: Up and at it at the crack of
dawn to return to GPCS. What an
adventure!

Assessing the use of global land cover data for guiding large area population distribution modelling
No full textGridded population distribution data are finding increasing use in a wide range of fields, including resource allocation, disease burden estimation and climate change impact assessment. Land cover information can be used in combination with detailed settlement extents to redistribute aggregated census counts to improve the accuracy of national-scale gridded population data. In East Africa, such analyses have been done using regional land cover data, thus restricting application of the approach to this region. If gridded population data are to be improved across Africa, an alternative, consistent and comparable source of land cover data is required. Here these analyses were repeated for Kenya using four continent-wide land cover datasets combined with detailed settlement extents and accuracies were assessed against detailed census data. The aim was to identify the large area land cover dataset that, combined with detailed settlement extents, produce the most accurate population distribution data. The effectiveness of the population distribution modelling procedures in the absence of high resolution census data was evaluated, as was the extrapolation ability of population densities between different regions. Results showed that the use of the GlobCover dataset refined with detailed settlement extents provided significantly more accurate gridded population data compared to the use of refined AVHRR-derived, MODIS-derived and GLC2000 land cover datasets. This study supports the hypothesis that land cover information is important for improving population distribution model accuracies, particularly in countries where only coarse resolution census data are available. Obtaining high resolution census data must however remain the priority. When the pen becomes a sword: Race and class consciousness in the literature of the West Indian writers Jacques Roumain, Etienne Lero, Gilbert Gratian, 1993
No full textThis thesis considers the influence of three West Indian writers who contributed to the development of Negritude as a literary, social and political phenomenon. The author shows that the racial awareness central to the Negritude movement was strongly affected by the experiences in Haiti and Martinique in particular. The thesis is comprised of three chapters and a conclusion. The first examines the awakening of racial consciousness in Paris in the 1930s and 40s, placing those developments in literary and historical perspective. This chapter also serves as an introduction to the milieu of West Indian and black American writers who were aggressively active in deriving a literary response to racial oppression. The second and third chapters analyze the roles of individual writers. The second chapter probes the writings of Jacques Roumain. He made an impression with his Marxist analysis of the Haitian situation, pushed for an indigenous Haitian literature, and developed the peasant novel. By using excerpts from essays, poems, and his novel, Gouverneurs de la Rosee, the writer details the influence of this Haitian author on Negritude writers. The third chapter considers two lesserstudied writers, the Martinicans Etienne Lero and Gilbert Gratiant. Gratiant embraced the mixed cultural heritage of Martinique, while Lero fought for an African outlook in initiating Legitime Defense, and through other contributions. An exploration of a small sampling of their work will help to clarify the context of color and caste in Martinique. The conclusion summarizes the authors social critique of French civilization and shows that the experiences of the West Indian authors discussed in the thesis influenced the principal leaders of Negritude--Leopold Sedar Senghor, Leon Damas and Aime Cesaire--and that this can be seen in the conceptions the Negritude movement embraced

President PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Looking back over this year, our school
has changed a lot with our new bandroom,
renovated shop, the new six-day rotation
system and our new teachers. I think this all
helped in making our school the best it has been
since I've been here. I really had a great time
being president and believe me, it's not easy!
I had fun planning and organizing events over the
year and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I
did.
As we, the grade nine's go on to grade ten,
I don't think we'll ever forget this super school!
For those of you who are staying for another one
or two years good luck and keep our school the
best ever!

Another great year has gone by, but this year was exceptional. The
participation and school spirit really made Paterson shine.
Many people in our community realized that our school is a place that
welcomes them. We, as a student body and staff, worked to ensure we
emphasized the community theme.
Being vice president has meant a lot of hard work but the position
was very rewarding. I've had a lot of new, enjoyable experiences. I
would encourage others to support Student Council activities.
I would like to express my appreciation to all the people who helped
out in the many school events. To the teachers for their support and
the students for their awesome participation. These people make Paterson
great.
In future years I'm sure this 86/87 school year will be looked back
on as one to remember. Our achievements were many and will be even greater
as "We've only just begun".

affected by the decisions that you
make today.
There are some keys to
personal success that have proven
themselves over the years. Look
to the future with optimism and cultivate a positive mental attitude.
Success is much more elusive for the individual with a sour
disposition. You will have successes and you will have failures to
be sure. Remember to view each as a learning experience.
Strive to be the best that you can be. On the track, races
are won and lost by mere split seconds - this is the difference between
glory and tears. It is the same in life. Striving to be a "little bit
better" can make the difference.
People tend to get what they expect from themselves and
others. Therefore, expect the best from yourself and from those
around you.
And most importantly - be a friend to yourself. You are
special - act that way.
Even though "you've only just begun" you can look forward
with great anticipation to a very bright future indeed. In the words
