Bimetallic copper-platinum particles supported in Y zeolite: structural characterization by EXAFS

    No full text
The structures of bimetallic CuPt particles in freshly reduced and outgassed CuPt/NaY zeolites were characterized by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at the Cu K-edge and Pt L3-edge. In order to understand the effect of copper on the coordinative environment of platinum, reduced Cu/NaY and Pt/NaY were also studied. It is found that the structure of CuPt bimetallic particles is dependent on the atomic ratio of Cu and Pt in the zeolites. At room temperature, some of the Cu atoms are oxidized, presumably by reacting with protons on the zeolite surface. By outgassing in helium at 500°C, additional Cu atoms were leached from the surface of the CuPt particles to expose more Pt atoms on the surface. Thus, an enhancement in the activity of toluene hydrogenation was observed. Due to the leaching of Cu atoms upon outgassing in helium or under vacuum, hydrogen chemisorption is not an appropriate method to estimate the number of surface Pt atoms in bimetallic CuPt particles supported in NaY

    Performing the Author

The Japanese-Korean author Yū Miri (born in 1968), still fairly unknown in Germany, belongs to those successful contemporary Japanese authors for whom it is typical to be known and celebrated not only for their texts but also for their excessive media presence. The multimedia staging by the author of her self as the ‘author Yū Miri’ sparks just as much interest in the Japanese public and literary scene as do her literary texts. In her book, published by the Munich-based house Iudicium Verlag, Iwata-Weickgenannt provides not only a comprehensive overview of Yū’s literary works published between the years of 1994 and 2005, but she also thematizes the medial representation of ‘Yū Miri’ in her analyses. In the first section of her book, Iwata-Weickgenannt provides a very good overview of the field out of which Yū’s identity problematic as a Japanese-Korean author arises. The second main section of the book is structured along the three phases of the self-discovery process, or rather the self-creation process, o

Eine wohltuende Unsicherheit: On Naming and Authenticity in the Works of Milena Michiko Flašar

Through a close reading of the works by the young Austrian author Milena Michiko Flašar, this article explores the complex role of given, assumed, and socially imposed names for transnational subjects. For the first- and second-generation migrants in Flašar’s texts, migration and translation are both liberating and encumbering: In her first text [Ich bin] , translation across linguistic and ethnic borders serves as the perfect defamiliarizing impetus for aesthetic production, while in her novel Okaasan: Meine unbekannte Mutter the plurality of names for the migrant mother inhibits the second-generation daughter’s search for a true or authentic name for herself. Nevertheless, instead of an economy of translation where one name replaces another, Flašar shows her figures gradually developing the capacity to maintain multiple names in different languages. I argue that this replaces the conventional model of individual authenticity as self-congruence with one that does not demand hypermastery of self and that bears witness to the true complexity of transnational experience. A final analysis of Flašar’s breakthrough novel Ich nannte ihn Krawatte builds on these themes to show that even non-migrants and non-minority subjects have access to this same complexity, one which in Flašar’s words infuses a wohltuende Unsicherheit [beneficial uncertainty] into even the most hegemonic society

Interest-based negotiation and MUN : equipping youth with appropriate tools for a better World

application/pdfThis article defines what negotiation is and how it works in international diplomacy by applying interest-based negotiation. Based on the workshop conducted at the Global Negotiation Symposium in June 2017, the paper focuses on United Nations (UN) intergovernmental processes and examines how the UN has applied principles of negotiation. Reflecting on the author’s practical experiences, it also discusses the implications of youth learning interest-based negotiation. It suggests how this approach can further be used in Model United Nations (MUN) conferences when negotiating global issues by mutually meeting national and global interests. To this end, practical guidance is offered as to how to prepare MUN delegates for conferences and their careers.Mercy Collegedepartmental bulletin pape
