Critical Void Volume Fraction Identification Based on Mesoscopic Damage Model for NVA Shipbuilding Steel

    No full text
\ua9 2019, The Author(s). NVA mild steel is a commonly used material in the shipbuilding industry. An accurate model for description of this material’s ductile fracture behaviour in numerical simulation is still a challenging task. In this paper, a new method for predicting the critical void volume fraction fc in the Guson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model is introduced to describe the ductile fracture behaviour of NVA shipbuilding mild steel during ship collision and grounding scenarios. Most of the previous methods for determination of the parameter fc use a converse method, which determines the values of the parameters through comparisons between experimental results and numerical simulation results but with high uncertainty. A new method is proposed based on the Hill, Bressan, and Williams hypothesis, which reduces the uncertainty to a satisfying extent. To accurately describe the stress-strain relationship of materials before and after necking, a combination of the Voce and Swift models is used to describe the material properties of NVA mild steel. A user-defined material subroutine has been developed to enable the application of the new parameter determination method and its implementation in the finite element software LS-DYNA. It is observed that the model can accurately describe structural damage by comparing the numerical simulation results with those of experiments; thus, the results demonstrate the model’s capacity for structural response prediction in ship collision and grounding scenario simulation

Differential diagnosis of patients with intracranial sinus venous thrombosis related isolated intracranial hypertension from those with idiopathic intracranial hypertension

In patients presenting with intracranial hypertension without hydrocephalus, mass lesions, and with normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) composition (pseudotumor cerebri syndrome), the diagnosis of intracranial sinus venous thrombosis (ISVT) has crucial etiological, therapeutic and prognostic implications. Utilizing two well-defined groups of pseudotumor cerebri patients, one with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or angiography confirmed ISVT (17 patients) and the other in whom ISVT has been excluded (idiopathic intracranial hypertension [IIH], 27 patients), we investigated the characteristics that might be helpful in distinguishing them. No clinical or auxiliary findings differed between the ISVT and IIH groups except for female gender and lower CSF protein level, which were significantly associated with the latter. While the syndrome pseudotumor cerebri could be due to multiple causes including ISVT, the term IIH should be restricted for patients with isolated intracranial hypertension attributable to no other neurological or systemic disease. Since CT frequently misses ISVT, patients with pseudotumor cerebri syndrome should undergo MRI and MR venography before being labeled as IIH. We conclude that Modified Dandy's Diagnostic Criteria of pseudotumor cerebri, formulated prior to MRI era, can no longer be applied for the diagnosis of IIH. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The Nationale Volksarmee in German reunification : aspects of policy and process

Disposing of the Nationale Volksarmee (NVA), the armed forces of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), was viewed as the initial step of a comprehensive German post Cold War defence reform programme. The author of this study intends to challenge a generally accepted perspective originated by the political leadership of the Federal Republic of Germany and subsequently recited by many politico-military commentators that this effort of managing the NVA had significant positive impact on the overall German reunification process. The author assumed that such a political myth was caused by an insufficient basis of judgment, only focused on the initial stage of accommodating former NV A members into the Bundeswehr. Therefore, this study will re-examine the essence and significance of managing the NVA from two new angles, which received less attention from previous researchers. From a study of the negotiating process regarding the NVA in the last days of the GDR regime, the author proves that the future of the NVA never was the core issue to any party other than its military professionals. Hence, it could not be drastically elevated as a key factor in facilitating the post-reunification German national unity. Furthermore, re-visiting the process of disposing of NVA assets other than personnel proves that this had no effect on promoting national consolidation. On the contrary, many scandals that happened in transferring the NY A assets could have had the potential of undermining the national unity. At least, those problems caused numerous criticisms from the citizens of eastern Germany. By summarising the newly explored facts from these new angles, the author still genuinely believes that the Bundeswehr did positively contribute to the German national unity by appropriately managing the NVA thus defusing potential negative impacts on German post-reunification society. Nevertheless, the significance of their task should not be overrated in history

A FUZZY GRA-BASED DECISION-MAKING APPROACH ON THE SELECTION OF LEAN TOOLS: A CASE STUDY OF INDIAN APPAREL INDUSTRY

    No full text
Most manufacturing industries find many Non-Value-Added (NVA) components compared to value-added components from their shop floor. Identifying the best Lean Tools (LTs) from many available tools for their present manufacturing environment considering many wastes remains a multi-criteria decision-making problem. The problem becomes complicated when decision-makers' preference for wastes and LTs is uncertain. Grey theory is the most predominant mathematical method to address this issue. This paper proposed a framework that incorporates value stream mapping (VSM) and grey relational analysis coupled with principal component analysis under fuzzy environment for LTs selection problem. The VSM of the current and future state are compared to visualize the improvement. The framework developed in this work is illustrated in a case study from the Indian apparel industry. The results show a significant reduction in production lead time (62.5%), cycle time (2.3%), NVA time (62.6%), and the number of workers (16.6%)

18/2008: The time at the "Asche". Memories of NVA soldiers as an object and conceptual challenge of contemporary historical research

The current debate on the future of GDR research can be translated into the question: How can the stories of both German states be adequately integrated into a "German" post-war history? In the future, the potential of approaches to such questions will be fruitful, above all in terms of the history of everyday life, the history of mentalities and, in a broader sense, cultural history. In addition, topics and sources that have not been given enough attention so far must be taken into account. The present essay takes this path using the example of the memories of soldiers of the NVA. It describes a field of remembrance that spans the turnaround of 1989, which allows the significance of individual experiences in the GDR for the emergence of identities and the creation of historical images in the society of reunited Germany to become clearer. The author discusses different types of sources, especially internet forums and spaces of remembrance on the net. With regard to these Internet sources, the article offers methodological and conceptual considerations which can lead and challenge university and academic research to a still uncharted territory of history
