Computational tools for poverty measurement and analysis

    No full text
This paper introduces some relatively straightforward computational tools for estimating poverty measures from the sort of data that are typically available from published sources. All that is required for using these tools is an elementary regression package. The methodology also easily lends itself to a number of poverty simulations, some of which are discussed. The paper addresses the central question: How do we construct poverty measures from grouped data on consumption and income? Two broad approaches can be identified: simple interpolation methods and methods based on parameterized Lorenz curves. The paper briefly describes the two approaches and discusses why the second may be considered preferable.Income. ,Consumption (Economic theory) ,Poverty Research Methodology. ,

ABSTRACT First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Gaurav Barve is the first author on ‘Septins are involved at the early stages of macroautophagy in S. cerevisiae’, published in Journal of Cell Science. Gaurav is a PhD student in the laboratory of Ravi Manjithaya at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India, investigating the role of septins in autophagy.</jats:p

Study of forced decomposition behavior of lamivudine using LC, LC-MS/TOF and MS(n)

    No full text
Lamivudine was subjected to forced decomposition conditions of hydrolysis (neutral, acidic and alkaline), oxidation, photolysis and thermal stress, as suggested in the ICH guideline Q1A(R2). The drug showed instability in acid and alkali, while it remained stable in neutral conditions. It also degraded extensively under oxidative environment. It remained stable to light and thermal stress. In total, five degradation products were formed, which could be separated by LC on a C18 column using a gradient method. To characterize the products, first a complete fragmentation pathway of the drug was established by carrying out multi-stage (MSn) and MS/TOF accurate mass studies. The same was compared to fragment pattern of the degradation products resulting from LC–MS/TOF studies. The accurate mass values obtained from LC–MS/TOF were used to obtain elemental compositions, and the total information helped in identification of the degradation products. Subsequently, degradation pathway of the drug was laid down, along with mechanisms of formation of the degradation products. There is no previous information on these aspects on the drug in the literature

Determinants of poverty in Mozambique (1996-97)

    No full text
This report presents an analysis of the structural determinants of living standards and poverty in Mozambique, which is based on nationally-representative data from the first national household living standards survey since the end of the civil war: Poverty in Mozambique is predominantly a rural phenomenon and is pervasive, with over two-thirds of the population falling below the poverty line. The degree of regional variation of poverty within the country is striking. The policy simulations that illustrate the impact that changes in the levels of determinants of poverty have on poverty levels allow us to identify six possible elements of a prospective poverty alleviation strategy for Mozambique. These include (1) increased investment in education, (2) sustained economic growth, (3) a sectoral pattern of growth favoring faster growth in the industrial and services sectors, (4) measures to raise agricultural productivity, (5) improved rural infrastructure, and (6) reducing fertility and dependency load within households. In conclusion, any meaningful poverty reduction strategy in Mozambique must give the highest priority to rural areas and must address these macro-level and household-level determinants of poverty in its policy formulations.Economic development. ,Agricultural policies. ,Education Economic aspects. ,Living standards Mozambique. ,Poverty Mozambique. ,
