Surfing - a resonant life?
The study initially problematizes the human lifestyle, which today, contributes to major climate changes of which threaten civilizations and nature around the world. A society focused on consumption and growth not only harms the earth, but also creates major challenges for human mental health. The world, therefore, demands a change in lifestyle; one that does not destroy nature and ourselves. There are many different approaches to an alternative lifestyle. This is, however, deepening into the Danish surf culture in how surfers choose to adopt the good life. The geographical focal point for Danish surfing is located on the west coast of Jutland, known as Cold Hawaii. The investigation has a critical theoretical approach to knowledge production and has a theoretical point of origin in Hartmut Rosa's concept of resonance; which forms the basis of Rosa's normative ideal of the good life. Resonance, thus, becomes the basis of the social criticism in this study, which is crucial for a critical theoretical study. The empiricism is gathered through qualitative interviews with surfers residing in Cold Hawaii. These interviews exemplify the knowledge of surfing’s influence in the surfers' search for 'the good life'. This knowledge further forms the basis of the study; showing that surfing is of great importance to the surfers' search for 'the good life'. They achieve a resonant relationship with nature, which is primarily made possible through a flexible working life. Finally, the possibility of creating a more flexible working life for other groups in society is discussed and it is concluded doing so will require changes in the current social structure and the general understanding of work-life
High School or Technical School?
In this thesis we have addressed the subject choice in connection with young people. We have studied how two groups of students in a high school and two groups of students on a technical college have reasoned why they make decisions. Based on Thomas Ziehes theory about individuality and community, we have formulated an ideal type about the culture oriented choice. Furthermore we have formulated another ideal type about the rational oriented choice based on rational choice theory, further investigated through the relative risk aversion hypothesis. From these ideal types we have analysed on our empirical data. First of all we have analysed in connection with the high school students, afterwards the students from the technical college. From these analyses we found various topics. At last we have connected the two groups of students and devised a discussion. We can conclude that high school students makes choices mainly reasoned through having a social life at their education and based on the prestige and money their future jobs can provide. The students at the technical school reasoned their choices of education mainly through the argument of doing what they want to do and doing something that they have interest in. In providing help for the students in choosing, the parents were an important factor for the high school students, while the students at the technical school mainly found help in making choices from education counselors at their former schools
The controversy about the HPV-vaccine: A report on why so many people go against the Danish Health Authority and choose not to get the vaccine against HPV and which controversies that occur between the involved parts
This study examines the controversy about the HPV vaccine based on the problem statement: Why do girls deselect the Danish Health Authority’s HPV vaccine recommendation, and which actors and alliances have been involved in and influenced the controversies of the vaccine? The HPV vaccine was approved in Denmark in 2006 and since then it has been both very popular and very criticized and further the number of girls getting vaccinated is decreasing. To examine the development of the acceptance of the vaccine, the Actor-Network Theory is used to analyze which actors that form alliances in the network of the HPV vaccine and which controversies it is confronted with. Furthermore, the strategies used are examined together with the historic development of the relation between the patient and the health authorities and the trust thereof. From these studies, it is concluded that the choice of strategy to create and stabilize the network is vital. When the number of vaccinated girls decrease drastically it shows how the opponents of the vaccine has used the strategies better than the health authorities.<br/
Citizenship & Participatory Parity for Citizens with Disabilities in Denmark 2009-2019
The purpose of this paper is to examine how two different Danish national newspapers portrayed rights of citizens with disability throughout the years 2009 to 2019. The paper examines this portrayal through the concepts of T. H. Marshall’s theory of citizenship in a welfare state, and Nancy Fraser’s theory of participatory parity as an ideal for social justice. The analysis samples 24 articles from each newspaper in the years 2009, 2014 and 2019, in total 144 articles across the three selected years. These articles have been coded, with the intention of finding general tendencies within the topics and ways of portraying the research subject. The paper reaches the conclusion, that the newspapers portrayal of rights is not consistent with the circumstances of citizens with disability in Denmark. Therefore, Marshall’s idea of a full citizenship is not fulfilled, and Fraser’s theory of social justice remains incomplete
How the youth party during the covid-19 pandemic: a study about being young in 2020
The competitive state's organization of primary schools in Denmark
In this project we will examine the welfare states’ development towards a competitive state in Denmark. We wish to study whether this development can be seen in the organization of the primary schools throughout the last 25 years. This will be done by a document analysis of the primary school reform with a focus on the changes in the object clause. Furthermore we will look at the latest school reform to see if the changes are indicating that Denmark is becoming more competitive. Additionally we will discuss if this development has had an influence on the student in the primary schools, and why the politicians have felt the need to implement these changes to the school reform. For this discussion we will use Hartmut Rosas theory of the high speed society, as we believe it is relevant in this context to discuss whether the individual is influenced by the states’ organization of the primary schools. <br/
Subject positionings in Danmark Indsamling 2016
This study is an analysis of subject positions in the television program, Danmarks Indsamling 2016, and whether these are related to the postcolonial understanding. The first part of the project is a explanation of the theories used in the analysis. The theories include the postcolonial theories of Edward Said’s Orientalism and Matthew Hughey’s The white savior trope and Jagten på det eksotiske. The discourse analysis of this project is based on Michel Foucault’s og Ernesto Laclau’s theories on discourses. The first part of the analysis, is a discourse analysis of five selected sequences of Danmarks Indsamling 2016. It analyses the construction of subject positions and is based on five concepts from the discourse theories of Laclau and Foucault. The second part of the analysis, is a discussion of the subject positions, in regards to themes and concepts of the postcolonial theories. The study concludes the existence of a clear deffirens between the positioning of the giver as an active and executive subject and the receiver as a passive dependant. We further conclude, that this positioning is an expression of a western dominance of the postcolonial world, and that this dominance is expressed through accepted white paternalism
Citizenship and Ethnic Minority Girls
This project is developed from and will focus on the following: In which way are the possibilties of ethnic girls becoming citizens influenced by attending a class with an overrepresentation of ethnic minorities? The outline of the project, is mostly drawn from Grete Brochmanns interpretation of the citizenship theory, and Helle Hinges interpretation of educational institutions role in the students development of citizenship. Furthermore the project will include stigma theory by Erving Goffman and network theory by Robert Putnam. These theories processes the empirical outcome of to respective interviews; a focus-group interview and semi-structured interview. The paper will have a two-part analysis section, in which the first part will focus on the theoretical term of citizenship, while the second section will focus on the network theory. Stigma theory will be a part of both analysis sections. Furthermore the conclusions in the analysis will be discussed in relation to answering the objective of the project. This paper concludes, that there has been a stigma towards ethnic minorities before the interview persons attended the school, which has affected their social networking, which has thus resulted in a differentiated group identity in the class. This has ultimately inhibited the girls’ feeling and development of citizenship. This paper will end on a note of perspective, in which a proposal from an expert group discusses how to tackle classes that has an overrepresentation of ethnic minorities
