    Numerical Study of Geometry and Rotation Dependence on the Flow in Labyrinth Seals

    A computational study was conducted on the flow, both compressible and incompressible, in a labyrinth seal at various geometries and rotation rates. The computations were performed using the commercial software Fluent�� which solves the k-�� model to predict the flow field in the seal. Various clearance-pitch ratios were used to study the effect of clearance on the flow. The aspect ratio, which is defined as the pitch-height ratio was varied to study the influence of the depth of the cavity on the flow as a whole. These studies span a range of Taylor's number that is defined accordingly, while fixing the Reynolds number at 1000. The effects of clearance, aspect ratio and rotational rates are studied using carry-over coefficient and discharge coefficient. It is observed that a secondary recirculation zone (SRZ) occurs inside a seal cavity at above certain Taylor's number. This significantly changes the flow field in the seal and the cavity which results an increases in pressure drop across the seal for a given flow boundary condition. This formation of SRZ's is more evident in incompressible flow and occur at prohibitively high rotational speeds in case of air (compressible flow). It is also observed that flow with teeth on rotor are characterized by SRZ's while it's not case with teeth on stator. A flow map which shows the onset and presence of SRZ's is shown. The ratio of tangential velocity of the shaft to the average of the swirl velocity in a cavity at various geometries of the cavities are presented. They seem to be decreasing with decreasing depth and follow a linear pattern with the aspect ratios of the cavity

    A Novel M-SEPIC DC-DC Converter for BLDC Pumping System with Active PFC using ANFIS Controller

    An exigent consumer related concerns confronted due to utilization of massive front-end AC-DC rectifier in a grid-tied BLDC pumping system. Harmonic distortions are acquired, which prompts the disruption of power quality at utility grid system due to AC-DC conversion. Several factors for enhancing power-quality concerns are ameliorate the grid power-factor along with reduction of harmonic distortions, tightened regulation of DC output voltage. In this way, the DC-DC boost converter plays a unique role; operated in Continuous Conduction Mode. Based on summarizing advantages & disadvantages of classical DC-DC converters, a single switch high voltage gain M-SEPIC DC-DC converter is more suggestive for water pumping system due to non-existence of coupled inductors, low switching loss, low di/dt stress, high efficiency, compact structure, low cost, etc. This work proposes the novel M-SEPIC DC-DC converter fed brushless-DC motor drive is controlled by voltage source inverter and powered by singlephase grid system with improved power-quality features. Moreover, Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System is recommended for prediction of optimal switching states to amplify the BLDC motor speed and torque-ripple depreciation. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is validated under constant speed situations by real-time operating conditions which are evaluated by Matlab /Simulink tool; and simulation results are conferred with attractive comparisons

    Synthesis And Exploration Of Catalytic Activity Of Amidooxazolinate Zinc Complexes And A Manganese Salen Complex

    A family of new chiral C2 symmetric amido-oxazolinate ligands with three different linkers has been synthesized and the respective bimetallic zinc complexes were generated with two equiv. of Zn[N(SiMe3)2]2, a while bischelating zinc complex was synthesized with one equiv. Zn[N(SiMe3)2]2. The bimetallic catalyst with m-phenylenediamine linker afforded poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC) formation with 78% carbonate linkages, while the catalyst with 1,8-diaminoanthracene linker generated isotactic PCHC with 86% m-centered tetrads. A monometallic version of the amido-oxazolinate zinc complexes were also used to catalyze ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of styrene oxide (SO) or cyclohexene oxide (CHO) with different anhydrides. Type of substituents on the ligand frame work was observed to influence the catalytic activity of the reaction. These complexes were observed to be viable initiators for ROCOP of epoxides and anhydrides. A manganese(V) salen complex was used as an effective pre-catalyst in hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones, dehydrogenative coupling of hydroxyl groups with hydrosilanes, condensation of diols and dicarbonyls with hydrosilanes to synthesize poly(silylethers). The catalyst was active in all cases and a range of functional groups, such as chloro, nitro, methoxy, carbonyl, and carbon-carbon multiple bonds were tolerated in these reactions. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction likely proceeds through a reduced manganese(III) hydride species that undergoes electrophilic attack by the substrates. In addition, inexpensive, easy-to-make, readily available metal complexes were used for the epoxidation of sucrose soyate (SS) using environment benign, non-toxic oxidants like H2O2, and molecular oxygen. Methyltrioxorhenium (MTO) was proved to be an effective biphasic catalyst to afford 100% epoxide content with complete conversion using H2O2 and 2-methyl THF.
