Among species recorded in India and Sri Lanka <i>N. assamensis</i> resembles <i>N. augantha</i> (Figs. 17, 18) and <i>N. seraphias</i> (Figs. 4, 5). From <i>N. augantha</i> it differs by the presence of the W-shaped light mark at the forewing base, the absence of silver-grey stripes in the basal third of the forewing and by the enlarged compound eyes in males. From <i>N. seraphias</i> it differs by the presence of two or more longitudinal yellow stripes in the apical third of the forewing and the absence of a finger-like process at the apical part of phallus.</p> <p> <b>Description</b> (Figs. 16, 78): see Kozlov (1997a).</p> <p> <b>Distribution</b>.     Tortricites skalskii Kozlov, 1988 Excavation locality and depository: The specimen was described from the PIRAS, Moscow, but in a recent search was not found in the PIRAS collection (Prof. A. Rasnitsyn, pers. comm.). Holotype: PIN 964/659; PT: PIN 964/660)/ Baltic Region (Baltic Amber, Prussian Fm.)/ Lutetian, Middle Eocene. The re-assessment is based on the information and illustrations in Kozlov (1988) [original description in Russian]. Published illustrations: Kozlov 1988: 38, fig. 9 (drawing). Condition: The fossil (holotype) is in two fragments. Adult moth with head, partial body and wings. The forewing length is 6 mm. Comments: A drawing of the holotype is presented by Kozlov (1988), but some of the information given in the description comes from a fragment of the holotype not included in the drawing. Labial palpi are said to be short and tightly pressed to the head. The long haustellum is coiled into a spiral. The antennae extend beyond the middle of the forewings. The venation in the forewing and hindwing is complete and veins are separate beyond the discal cell. In the forewing, the vein that defines the distal end of the cell is rather narrow; and the bases of M 2, M 3, and CuA 1 are very close together. In the hindwings, Sc ends near the apex of the wing, and R extends to the apex; M 3 and CuA 1 are close together at the base. Based on the characters that can be observed, in particular the wing venation, the fossil most likely belongs to Tortricidae. Externally similar to N. bistrigata, from which it differs by larger size, straight oblique stripe in the apical part of forewing (bent in N. bistrigata) and normally sized male genitalia (total length 1.10 mm vs. 0.48 mm in N. bistrigata) with long vinculum (2 × its width vs. 1 × its width in N. bistrigata). Etymology. Named after William Doherty (1857–1901), an American entomologist and enthusiastic moth collector, who collected the type specimens. Description. Male (Figs. 4, 13). FWL 6.3–6.9 mm; WLR 0.34–0.36. Vertex with sparse row of brown piliform scales along the occipital margin; frons brownish grey. Eyes enlarged, touching each other occipitally; interocular index 1.2. PLB 0.6 × vertical eye diameter and 1.3–1.5 × scape, dark brown. Proboscis dark brown. Antenna 3.1–3.2 × FWL. Scape and 6–8 basal segments of flagellum dark brown; following segments (up to 0.3 of flagellum) brown, with distinct white rings; distal part of flagellum entirely light grey to white. Tegula and thorax dark brown. Forewing light brown; its basal part (ca. 0.7 × FWL) densely suffused with dark brown scales and sparsely scattered with yellow scales (approximately in 15:1 ratio). Oblique stripe in the apical part of forewing straight, ochreous, reaching (or almost reaching) external wing margin. Wing apex between the veins RS1 and M1 with small ochreous stripe bordered by dark brown scales both internally and externally; the area between these two ochreous stripes dark silver grey. Fringe brown. Hindwing brown; costal area light grey; fringe brown. Legs brown; apices of tibiae and of all tarsomeres white; fore and hind tibiae medially with white spots; base of the first tarsomere white. Epiphysis at 0.5, not reaching tip of tibia. Abdomen brown. Female unknown. Male genitalia (Figs. 28–32, 40, 41). Tegumen wide, with W-shaped apex. Socius elongate, 1.0–1.2 × diameter of phallus. Vinculum 1.6 × length of valva, with slightly concave lateral margins, narrowly rounded basally; distal margin of vinculum indistinct, fused to valvae. Apex of valva extends far beyond the apex of tegumen. Valvae fused basally up to 0.35 × total length; their internal margins indistinct; dorsal margin of valva almost straight; distal part of valva narrow; apex of valva pointed. Anellus 0.3 × length of valva. Transtilla with small triangular medial process. Juxta 0.45 × length of phallus; arrow head very narrow (WLR 0.2), without lateral arms; apex of juxta rounded. Phallus 1.0 × length of vinculum, straight; base of phallus narrowly funnel-shaped. Distribution (Fig. 9). Indonesia (Irian Jaya). Comments. In male genitalia <i>N. turneri</i> differs from <i>N. panaeola</i> by rectangular shape of the basal half of valva (in lateral view) and hood-shaped tegumen.</p> <p> <b>Etymology.</b> Named after Alfred Jefferis Turner (1861–1947), who was quite as distinguished as a paediatrician as he was as an entomologist – in appreciation of his great contribution to the development of lepidopterology in Australia: he described about 3,500 species, more than 450 genera and four families of Lepidoptera.</p> <p> <b>Description.</b> Male (Figs. 7, 17). FWL 4.4–5.3 mm, WLR 0.35–0.37. Vertex yellowish brown to ochreous brown; frons glossy golden. PLB 0.35–0.45 × vertical eye diameter and 1.4–1.7 × scapus, yellowish brown to light ochreous brown. Proboscis light brown, base with tuft of elongated brown to bronze scales. Eyes enlarged; interocular index 1.2–1.3; occipital index 0.05–0.10. Length of antenna 3.0–3.2 × FWL. Scape and base of flagellum dark bronze, distal part of flagellum bronze; pegs present. Tegulae dark bronze to coppery bronze, dorsum glossy bronze. Forewing coppery bronze; basal field dark brown, its external margin reaches costa at 0.32 × FWL and dorsum at 0.18 × FWL. Glossy golden spot along costa relatively short (0.18–0.22 × FWL), externally bordered by pale yellow spot; yellow spot at the base of forewing variable in size, usually separated from dorsal wing margin by narrow dark brown line, but occasionally yellow colour can reach dorsal wing margin. Fascia is formed by a mixture (approximately 1: 1) of dark brown and yellow scales, which in the middle of fascia are arranged in narrow alternating lines (one scale in width); internal margin of fascia sinuate, reaches costa at 0.45 × FWL, i.e. far from basal field. External margin of fascia is formed almost exclusively by dark brown scales, with distinct dark brown spots near costa and dorsum. Tornal spot variable in size, from almost indistinct to a half of forewing width. Fringe bronze. Hindwing base semitransparent, apical half of hindwing brown with coppery tint; costal area grey; fringe light brown to grey. Legs bronze to brown, apices of all tibiae and tarsomeres distally darker, sometimes with coppery tint. Epiphysis at 0.45–0.65, usually not reaching apex of tibia. Abdomen brown with bronze lustre; basal sternites glossy golden.</p> <p>Female (Fig. 8). FWL 5.4 mm. Antenna 1.3 × FWL, base not thickened. Vertex ochreous yellow. Hindwing darker than in male. Abdomen laterally ochreous yellow. Otherwise similar to male.</p> <p>Male genitalia (Figs. 36–40). Tegumen hood-shaped, wide. Socius oval, 0.8 × diameter of phallus. Vinculum 2.8 × length of valva, with slightly concave lateral margins and W-shaped distal margin. Apex of valva extends far beyond the apex of tegumen. Ventral margin of valva convex, with prominent medial lobe at 0.5 × length of valva; dorsal margin slightly concave; apex of valva pointed. Valvae fused basally up to 0.1 × total length; internal margins of valvae indistinct. Anellus 0.35 × length of valva. Transtilla with narrow pointed medial process. Juxta 0.5 × length of phallus; arrow head narrow (WLR 0.55), with pointed tip and pointed lateral arms. This species also resembles <i>N. chalcoptera</i> (Fig. 31), from which it differs by the smaller size, narrow yellow band of fascia and absence of transverse yellow spot in hindwing.</p> <p> <b>Description</b>. Male unknown.</p> <p>Female (Fig. 30). FWL 4.9 mm, WLR 0.38. Vertex ochreous brown; frons marginally ochreous brown, medially naked. PLB short, brown. Proboscis brown. Scape and base of flagellum ochreous brown. Tegulae coppery brown; thorax glossy golden. Forewing brown with bronze (basally) to coppery (apically) tint; indigo blue iridescence is limited to basal part of costal margin. Fascia consists of narrow (0.10 × FWL) pale yellow band bordered by diffuse lines of dark brown scales externally (but not internally) followed by glossy silver to glossy golden band with diffuse dark brown external margin. Internal margin of ochreous medial band reaches costa at 0.33 × FWL. Distal part of forewing scattered with dark brown scales, with small dark brown to black spot adjacent to external margin of fascia at 0.35–0.38 × forewing width. Fringe bronze. Hindwing grey basally to bronze apically; costal area light grey, without transverse yellow spot; fringe grey at wing base to brown at apex. Legs bronze. Epiphysis at 0.6, not reaching apex of tibia.
