    No full text
It is obvious that more extensive work is needed in developing historical materials that address nature of science (NOS) concepts that will be implemented by teachers. Owing to the importance of meeting this need, research problem of this study is to design historical vignettes focused on the concept of chemical equilibrium which lies at the heart of high school and university chemistry topics by integrating NOS conceptions and to investigate whether the explicit-reflective teaching approach was effective in enhancing high school students’ views of NOS. This study aims to examine the effects of nature of science instruction with interactive historical vignette on student conceptions of (NOS) and student development. Participants were a total of 17 eleventh grade students, 7 females (41%) and 10 males (59%), in public high school in Ankara, Turkey. Adopting qualitative research techniques, the study used open-ended questions to evaluate students’ understandings of NOS and development, and reveal their accomplishments in the process. The results of this study indicate that the explicit-reflective approach to teaching of the chemical equilibrium unit to include NOS instruction as integrated within that content through interactive historical vignettes was effective in enhancing participant students’ views of NOS

Cigdemoglu, Ceyhan/0000-0001-5389-5790The present study specifically focuses on science teachers' views about scientific inquiry and their use of scientific inquiry in their lesson plans, which were prepared at a professional development workshop designed for better utilization of science centers (SCs). As an impact evaluation research, qualitative data was collected from 41 purposively selected volunteer science teachers. The project team provided the participants with intense instruction in inquiry, and fostered them to learn nature of science and nature of scientific inquiry explicitly. The participants designed lesson plans that integrate school science curricula with exhibits at SCs before and after the workshop. An open-ended questionnaire about the views about scientific inquiry (VASI) was administered before and after the workshop, and teachers' post-lesson plans were analyzed to detect the presence of scientific inquiry aspects. The majority of teachers exhibited improved views about scientific inquiry based on the VASI instrument. Also, lesson plan analyses indicated that teachers, who showed more improvement in VASI, included more scientific inquiry (SI) elements in their post-lesson plans. It was observed that science teachers' lesson plans are limited in terms of teaching science in line with real scientific inquiries in SCs to make students learn about the nature of scientific inquiry while learning science. Only two groups embedded SI properly in the SC-oriented lesson plans, and teachers rather used inquiry-based methods of teaching (e.g., argumentation, predict-observe-explain) and process skills (e.g., questioning, explanations). Accordingly, further studies are suggested to develop a specific pedagogical content knowledge framework for teaching with/in SCs.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey [114K646]This study is funded by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey under project number 114K646. Some parts of this paper were presented at NARST 2018 annual conference in Atlanta, USA

The purpose of this study is to analyze 9th grade physics, chemistry and biology curriculums, which were implemented by the Ministry of Education since the academic year 2008-2009, in terms of scientific literacy themes and the balance of these themes and also to examine the quality of statements about objectives. Physics, chemistry, and biology curriculums were examined and coded independently by two coders who were faculty members in the branch of chemistry, physics and biology education. Cohen's kappa statistic results showed that there was high degree of consistency between coders. Analysis results revealed that the theme the knowledge of science in the chemistry curriculum and the theme the investigative nature of science in the physics and biology curriculums were well emphasized; however, the theme the science as a way of thinking was not adequately emphasized in each of the three curriculums. The findings of the study show that nature of science should be more emphasized in science curriculum to help each of citizens in our country become lifelong learners and have an adequate level of scientific literacy

960-962The stoichiometric protonati on constants of 15 esters (methyl and ethyl esters of glycine, L-alanine, L -valine, L - leucine, L -phenylalanine, L -serine, L -methionine and methyl ester of L -isoleucine) in 20-80% (v/v) ethanol-water mixtures have been determined. The effect of solvent on α -amino acid methyl- and ethyl esters have also been determined at ionic strength of 0. 1 M NaCl and at 25°C under nitrogen atmosphere. A potentiometric method is used and the calculation of the constants has been carried out using PKAS computer programme. The logarithm of the protonation constants of α-amino acid esters is found to decrease linearly with increase in ethanol contents. The variation of these constants is discussed on the basis of specific solute-solvent interactions

The novel illustrates the local dialect as well. For as much as we are aware, the work has not been extensively dealt with in the linguistic aspect, therefore we have chosen this subject as the object of our study. Linguistic analysis of the work of this author, who has contributed greatly to the development of Turkish language, was made based on the rules of today’s Turkish language, but also taking into account the time of writing (1872), is made in three grammatical levels: lexicology, morphology and syntax. There are two types of sentences in the Turkish used by Sami: Turkish traditional type and the Indo-European one, where it is displayed the influence of the Albanian language, frequent use of constructed sentences with relative pronoun ki is also a sign of the impact of the Albanian language, mother tongue. Sami Frashëri, with his simple language, brought in the Turkish literature a new literary genre (novel) and many linguistic innovations, such as Indo-Europian type of sentence, which will was to become an integral part of creations by the new generation.

This study aims to explore the problematic of the real narrator in presenting the events of the novel and the narrative necessities that arise from positioning the narrator within referential, informational, and artistic functions. The study seeks to delve into the different forms of the narrator’s presence in Fitnat Al Ourouch by Zuwaina Al-Kalbani (2021). It considers the novel as a historical narrative that tells the history of one of the Nabahana kings who ruled ancient Oman, using that history as a catalyst for the unfolding of its events. The study also examines the functions of the narrator, the thresholds of the novel and their relationship to the act of narration, as well as the technical challenges the author faced in presenting a coherent narrative structure that balances the referential, fictional, and narrative dimensions. Adopting a narratological approach, the study seeks to address its key questions and reach significant results. Among them is the importance of narration through the act of written discourse, the conversion of poetry and its use as a referential source, and the legitimacy of functional transformation toward the omniscient narrator form to fulfil the requirements of narration

Büyükünal, Serkan Kemal (Arel Author), Şakar, Fitnat Şule (Arel Author), Turhan, İlkay (Arel Author), Erginbaş, Çınar (Arel Author)Turkish sucuk and pastirma are traditional meat products commonly consumed in Turkey. These products are generally known as dryfermented meat products (FMP), fermented and ripened naturally. Curing is a preparation method for FMPs used for prolonging shelf life. As well as additives such as nitrate and nitrite are used to obtain the desired colour and flavour, also inhibit the mentioned bacteria. Despite the advantages of the curing agents, FMPs may pose a risk for human health via uncontrolled (out of limits) usage. The present study was conducted to investigate the incidence of Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli 0157 and nitrate-nitrite contents in 132 sucuk and 66 pastirma samples collected from producers and retailers in Istanbul, Adapazari, Afyon and Kayseri.
