No full textThe internationally renowned author of numerous novels, essays, and articles, Georg Hermann, was born as Georg Borchardt in Berlin-Friedenau on October 7, 1871, the youngest of six children in a well-established Jewish family. Later in life he used his father’s first name Hermann as his surname when writing. Contrary to the expectations for a young man from a reputable family, Hermann did not pursue the Abitur exam in a Gymnasium (secondary school), but instead received a one-year certificate in 1890, leaving school to become an apprentice salesman at a tie company. From 1896 until 1899 he worked in the Statistical Office of Berlin, at the same time attending literature and art history lectures at the University of Berlin. Afterwards he worked as a freelance writer and art critic.His first book, 'Spielkinder', was published in 1896, but he did not become well-known until 1906, with the publication of 'Jettchen Gebert', followed by its sequel, 'Henriette Jacoby'. These novels told the story of the life of a young woman living in Jewish Berlin during the Biedermeier period of the 1820s and 1830s. Politically active, Georg Hermann was also a member of the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens.Having become known for his pacifist tendencies through his writing, and because of his Jewish heritage, Georg Hermann and his family fled to Holland shortly after the burning of the Reichstag in 1933. Although the rest of his family was saved from the Nazis after their occupation of Holland in 1943, Georg Hermann was sent to the Dutch concentration camp of Westerbork. Aid for trade and the political economy of trade liberalization
No full textThe Aid for Trade (AfT) initiative has gained much popularity since its launch at the World Trade Organization's Ministerial Conference in 2005, and there are ongoing discussions on its effectiveness and potential to improve the integration of developing countries into the world economy. This paper contributes to the debate by analyzing AfT in a political economy context. We find that the delivery of AfT is a precondition for trade reform in developing countries, as well as for trade liberalization and trade-enhancing rule-making in regional and international forums. No judge, no job!: Judicial discretion and incomplete labor contracts
No full textThe decision making of judges is prone to error and misapprehension. Consequently, the prevailing literature ties the economic function of courts to dispute resolution and minimization of rule making costs. In contrast to previous research, this analysis applies a contract theoretic perspective to the ruling of courts and keeps the focus on the implemented market transactions. Using labor contracts as institutional setting, performance and limitations of judicial law making are formally investigated and compared to the effects of specific legislation. It is shown that the efficient relation of legislative law making and judicial discretion is defined by the characteristics of the particular field of law and the actual market structure. The model also suggests a mutual dependency between legislation and adjudication to establish efficiency in law, contradicting the traditional legal doctrines of exclusive legislation or sole case-law. --incomplete contracts,judicial law making,legislation

Auch Wolf Schäfer, Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg, teilt die Auffassung, dass eine Kooperation der Wettbewerbsbehörden einer administrativen Harmonisierung der Wettbewerbsregeln vorzuziehen sei. Henning Klodt, Institut für Weltwirtschaft, Kiel, unterstreicht, dass globale Wettbewerbsregeln nationales Wettbewerbsrecht nicht ersetzen, sondern ergänzen und flankieren sollten. Wolfgang Kerber, Universität Marburg, vertritt die These, dass kein internationales Wettbewerbsrecht notwendig ist, aber dass internationale Verfahrensregeln erforderlich seien. Theresia Theurl, Universität Münster, sieht den Status quo darin, dass globale Wettbewerbsregeln nur in Ansätzen bestehen und die Gründe dafür in den Kosten, die sie verursachen, l iegen.
