Investigating multi-modal misinformation on transgender and nonbinary issues on Tiktok

Advisor: Md Momen Bhuiyan. 1 computer file (PDF); viii, 78 pages.Misinformation targeting the transgender and non-binary (TGNB) community poses serious risks, amplifying stigma, fueling prejudice, and contributing to systemic discrimination. Prior research shows that false narratives around TGNB issues, particularly as they spread on social media, can reinforce harmful stereotypes, influence public opinion and policy, and increase the vulnerability of TGNB individuals to violence and significant mental health challenges. Recognizing this urgent concern, our research investigates the scale, nature, and dissemination patterns of TGNB-related misinformation on TikTok, one of the most influential short-form video platforms today. In this study, we developed a comprehensive multi-modal data pipeline that collects, processes, and analyzes TikTok content directly from the personalized feeds of TGNB individuals. This pipeline integrates video frame extraction, OCR-based text analysis, and metadata harvesting, enabling the construction of a rich dataset that combines both visual and textual content along with engagement metrics and author-level statistics. Utilizing natural language processing techniques including advanced embedding models, clustering, and topic modeling, we identify recurring misinformation themes and characterize how these narratives vary across different content modalities. Beyond content-level analysis, we examine author influence patterns, cluster creators based on multi-modal similarity measures, and map the networks through which misinformation circulates. In addition, survey data collected from TGNB participants provides complementary insights into real-world exposure, personal engagement, perceptions of misinformation, and its potential psychological and social effects. These perception surveys allow us to directly capture participant experiences related to misinformation spread, detection confidence, verification behaviors, emotional impact, and societal consequences. The insights generated from this work aim to advance the academic understanding of multi-modal misinformation while informing the design of targeted mitigation strategies that address the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities such as the TGNB population. Femoral fracture following knee ligament reconstruction surgery due to an unpredictable complication of bioabsorbable screw fixation: a case report and review of literature
Uncemented Revision Hip Arthroplasty in B2 and B3 Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures - A Prospective Analysis
Periprosthetic femoral fractures are an increasingly common complication of total hip arthroplasty. If there is a fracture of the femur in the presence of an unstable prosthesis (Vancouver type B2 and B3), revision of the stem is imperative. We describe our experience of cementless femoral revision in management of twenty-six patients who sustained periprosthetic fractures of the Vancouver type B2 or B3, between February 1999 and March 2005. All patients were managed by revision arthroplasty, using cementless femoral stems. Cortical struts, cable plating systems, bone allograft and demineralised bone matrix were used to aid the reconstruction where indicated. All the fractures had clinical and radiological union. The outcome was graded, subjectively as satisfactory by all patients and this is substantiated objectively, by a post operative mean Harris hip score of 83.04. Uncemented revision appears to be an attractive option for periprosthetic fractures with unstable femoral stems.</jats:p
