    Jersey Homesteads (later renamed the Borough of Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whome had emigrated from Europe. In this letter, Boris Drasin, a community leader who was the President of the Jersey Homesteads Industrial Cooperative Association, expresses his concerns to their management corporation (Consumers Wholesale Clothiers, Inc.) about how financial losses will impact the lives of Roosevelt's residents, three-fourths of whom depended on the garment factory for their livelihoods. He makes suggestions as to how the situation might be improved

    Diplomska naloga obravnava problem priprave vode ter optimizacije njene rabe na gorskih postojankah in objektih, ki niso priključeni na komunalno omrežje. Veliko takih objektov, ki se največkrat pojavljajo na odročnih lokacijah, uporablja kot vir vode deževnico, nekatera med njimi imajo lastna zajetja. Voda se uporablja za različne namene, zato je smotrno, da se raba vode razdeli glede na potrebe dejavnosti. V teoretičnem delu diplomske naloge so opisane različne vrste voda (pitna, siva in črna voda), postopki priprave pitne vode, sistemi za izkoriščanje deževnice in reciklažo sive vode. V praktičnem delu diplomske naloge je predlagana ureditev rabe vode na gorski postojanki Kamniška koča na Kamniškem sedlu, kjer kot vir vode služi deževnica.The thesis addresses the problem of water preparation and optimization of its use in remote locations such as mountain huts and other buildings that are not connected to the main sewage system. Many of these facilities, use the rainwater as the primary source of water, some of them have their own water supply. This water is used for various purposes, so it should be divided up accordingly to its use. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the different types of water (potable, gray and black water), the process of producing the drinking water, rainwater systems and gray water recycling. In the practical part of the thesis, the regulation of water use in the mountain hut on Kamniško Sedlo is presented. The primary source of water in the hut is the rainwater

    Performance analysis of wastewater treatment plants for mountain lodges

    The thesis is based on independent chemical analyses, on-site analyses and field sampling. It includes seven selected wastewater treatment plants at mountain lodges. At each plant the author conducted three sets of winter analyses and two sets of summer analyses. The research includes 200 hours of field work in the mountains. Before conducting the analyses it was necessary to catalogue all wastewater treatment plants at Slovenian Alpine Association's mountain lodges and on this basis choose a representative sample of wastewater treatment plants for further research.\ud The thesis interfer widely with Slovenian environment with exact, analytical review of Slovenian legislation about small wastewater treatment plants. The results are generally\ud applicable to all small wastewater treatment plants while mountain-related are stressed separately.\ud The thesis monitored 20 parameters at inflow and outflow of wastewater treatment plants all around Slovenia. Propositional improvements for concrete plants are made on this data. The great amount of data acquired in the research is of great help for further scientific research.\ud The thesis also includes proposals and questions for improvement of Slovenian legislation, proposals for wastewater treatment plants producers as well as proposals to improve and to make on-site samplings and measures uniform. It also includes proposals for further investors of wastewater treatment plants in mountain environment

    Population exposure to lead in drinking water in Slovenia

    BACKGROUND: Various environmental studies have shown that the problem of elevated concentrations of lead in drinking water exists mainly in older buildings, where lead parts are built in the network or the network contains other materials containing lead. Migration of lead into drinking water is also affected by particular characteristics of the drinking water and by stagnation of the water in the pipes. Children are particularly susceptible to increased risk of lead exposure in the environment and adverse effects of lead will manifests at lower concentrations in the blood. The purpose of this work is to contribute starting points for the creation of evidence-based measures to reduce the levels of lead in drinking water, and thus its impact on human health in Slovenia. \ud METHODS: The author conducted a cross-sectional study in order to assess the status of selected public water supply systems and domestic water supply systems in selected kindergartens and elementary schools on the basis of a questionnaire. The concentration of lead in the drinking water of the selected kindergartens and elementary schools was determined by means of an experimental method in a laboratory. Cold drinking water samples of 250ml that stood in the pipes from 8 to 18 hours were used. A method for determining the migration from different materials was applied. An old lead pipe was used, which had already been installed in the facility, as well as new materials (plastic, copper, galvanized pipes and stainless steel pipes and also brass faucet, chrome angle valve and plastic hose) which had not been used yet. To determine the concentration of lead in the water the method ICP-MS was applied. Then the ecological study followed. Lead exposure for a 6-year- old child was calculated on the basis of assessing the uptake of lead from air, water, food and soil. In the calculation, absorption factors were considered and also worst–case scenario was provided. For the assessment, the model IEUBK was used. \ud RESULTS: Sampling showed that more than 22 % of samples had levels of lead higher than 10 gl, some of them highly exceeded that level. Positive correlation between the age of a building and the concentration of lead in drinking water confirms the assumption that the concentration of lead in drinking water is higher in old domestic distribution networks. Implementation of lead migration from various types of pipes demonstrated the migration from galvanized pipes in all simulants. The assessment of lead exposure for a 6-year-old child has shown a risk of adverse health effects. \ud CONCLUSION: All concentrations of lead after flushing the pipes were below the 10 gl, which shows that the most effective and the fastest action to lower the concentrations of lead is flushing the water pipes. For the purposes of the national monitoring of drinking water, it is necessary to apply a better method for determining lead levels in drinking water namely the sampling of water that stood in the pipes at least 8 to 18 hours.\u
