Dr. Kobus Maree has authored more than 120 peer reviewed articles and 60 books or book chapters. In 2009 he was awarded the Stals Prize of the South African Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 2010 he received the Chancellor’s Medal for Teaching and Learning from his university.http://najp.8m.comhb201
A reflective conversation with Kobus Maree, Faculty of Education, University of Pretoria, South Africa
Always regarded as somewhat of an ‘outsider’ (the child of an Englishspeaking (Catholic)
mother and an Afrikaans (Protestant) father in an exclusively Afrikaans milieu) and growing
up extremely poor, seeing the hardship of others and realising howmuch talentwas going to
waste, Kobus Maree took a particular interest in gifted disadvantaged persons. A marginalised
loner, he almost inevitably developed creative abilities and took a keen interest in
creativity, giftedness and the education of gifted, disadvantaged learners. As an adult, his
research showed that many teachers in South Africa have to contend with the generally
poor socioeconomic background of learners. A dire need for appropriate teacher and
learner support materials, and school environments that are not conducive to achievement
(including inadequate facilities, overcrowded classrooms, lack of teacher and learner support
materials). SouthAfrica is at a critical stage in its education. It is therefore important for
educators to teach emotional intelligence in their classrooms. Our biggest challenge will be
tomaintain and enhance vitality in gifted education in a dynamic, ever-evolving environment.
A combination of scholarly leadership and strategic management to support gifted learners
is important. We should do all we can to promote societal transformation and diversity,
focussing anew on underrepresented groups (women and ethnic groups) who show
promise and support them. The widest array of partners possible including the big institutional
players, the entire teaching fraternity (including government departments), nongovernmental
organisations and miscellaneous interest groups together should develop
strategic, rolling five-year plans and make gifted education a priority.http://gei.sagepub.comam201
Development of the Maree Career Matrix : a new interest inventory
In this article, the authors report on the development of an interest inventory (the
Maree Career Matrix) for South Africans with a minimum of Grade 9 second
language English or Afrikaans proficiency. The instrument was completed by
1106 learners in Grade 11 in the Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and North West
provinces of South Africa. Rasch analysis was done; inter-category correlations,
reliability coefficients, and differential item functioning values were calculated;
and validity and norm tables were established. We concluded that the Maree
Career Matrix is easy to use and has good psychometric qualities, takes
relatively little time to administer, provides reliable and valid results, is
standardised, and can be applied to large groups with relative ease. Additional
research is needed to gather data on the profiles of people in other age brackets
and to trace their progress, the aim being to further investigate and enhance the
predictive value of the Maree Career Matrix.http://sap.sagepub.comhb20162024dzmEducational Psycholog
Group career construction counseling : a mixed-methods intervention study with high school students
This study investigated the value of group career construction counseling in a high school context. The author used purposive sampling to select participants who had sought career counseling. A mixed-methods intervention study design was also used. Participants (N = 57) completed the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale-South Africa (CAAS-SA) before the 1st and after the 2nd intervention. The Career Interest Profile and the Maree Career Matrix were used to facilitate the intervention, and the CAAS-SA was used to test the research hypotheses. The findings revealed that the boys' and the girls' career adaptability had improved meaningfully on all of the CAAS-SA subscales. No gender-based differences were found. However, differences were detected between both the boys' and the girls' pre- and posttest Control and Confidence subscale scores. The findings demonstrate the value of career construction counseling in group settings. More longitudinal research with diverse participants is needed.https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/21610045hj2020Educational Psycholog
Research in psychology : in search of quality assurance
In a previous editorial (Maree, 2010), I referred to the prominent role of assessment in psychological research. Everything in the amended scope of practice of psychologists revolves around this critical activity. In this editorial, I wish to return to this debate, but from a different angle
Administering career construction counselling to a disadvantaged rural learner with inadequate self - efficacy
Mini Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2023.This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of career construction counselling on a rural disadvantaged learner with inadequate self-efficacy who is ready to embark on a career. Learners from environments challenged by disadvantages face many challenges that are unique to their environment. Maree and Che (2020) stated that learners from such environments tend to feel disempowered by the situation in which they find themselves – unemployment, for instance, is a common characteristic of such situations. Consequently, many learners are left uncertain about their future, and at the same time, their career identity is impaired. Bandura (1977) explained that individuals' achievements are shaped by the dynamic interplay among their behaviour, personal factors, and the environment.
An investigation into the influence of career construction counselling on the contextual experiences of the participant was informed by career construction theory (Savickas, 2005) and self-construction theory (Guichard & Lenz, 2005), which are both based on the constructivist paradigm. Enhancing the resources available to participants is crucial, especially considering that career trajectories are shaped by a combination of individual and contextual factors. To investigate this, the study adopted a qualitative research approach using an intrinsic case study design. The study sampled a single disadvantaged participant between the ages of 18 and 25 from Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. To ensure the accuracy of the data, multiple data generation methods were used including semi-structured interviews, qualitative career assessments, observation of body language, and extensive field notes. The data for the study was analysed using thematic analysis as outlined by Braun and Clarke (2006). Throughout the research process, I adhered to the ethical standards outlined by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (2016).
The findings of the study suggested that the self-efficacy of the participant was significantly enhanced through the intervention, meaning that the working assumptions and research questions have been successfully answered. The participant appreciated the skills that he learned from the intervention and recommended it for other people in his peer groups.Educational PsychologyMEd (Educational Psychology)UnrestrictedFaculty of EducationSDG-04: Quality Educatio
Using integrative career construction counselling to promote autobiographicity and transform tension into intention and action
DATA AVAILABILITY STATEMENT : The data presented in this study are available on request from the corresponding author. The data are not publicly available due to South African POPI Act requirements. This article reports on the use of integrative career counselling to promote autobiographical
reasoning in a purposively sampled gifted 16-year-old female learner with moratorium career identity
status. I implemented an explanatory, mixed-methods (QUALITATIVE-quantitative; uppercase
denoting the bigger weighting given to the qualitative aspect) research design and used qualitative
and quantitative career construction counselling techniques and methods and quantitative career
construction counselling techniques and methods and strategies to construct data. The Maree Career
Matrix (MCM) was used to gather the participant’s career interests (“scores”) quantitatively, and
the Career Interest Profile (CIP) was used to elicit her micro-narratives (“stories”) qualitatively. An
adapted version of thematic data analysis was used to analyse the data. The intervention promoted
the participant’s (self-)reflection and reflexivity, transformed her tension into intention, led to an
increase in her career options, and helped her revitalise her sense of meaning, purpose, and positivity.
While the findings are encouraging, future (longitudinal) research is needed to establish the long-term
influence of the intervention espoused here.https://www.mdpi.com/journal/educationam2023Educational Psycholog

Students' experiences and expectations of technologies: an Australian study designed to inform planning and development decisions
The pace of technological change accompanied by an evolution in social, work-based and study behaviours and norms poses particular challenges for universities as they strive to develop high quality and sustainable technology-rich learning environments. Maintaining currency with the latest advances is resource intensive, hence the costs incurred in upgrading existing and introducing new technologies need to be carefully weighed up against the potential benefits to students. This calls for a multidimensional approach to planning, with the student voice being an important dimension. Three Australian universities have recently completed a project to gain a better understanding of students\u27 experiences and expectations of technologies in everyday life and for study purposes. The LMS and 25 other technologies ranging from established university offerings (email, learning management systems) to freely available social networking technologies (YouTube, Facebook) were surveyed. More than 10,000 students responded. This paper discusses the development of the survey and presents the broad trends that have emerged in relation to the current use of technologies and desired future use of these for learning purposes. The implications of the survey findings for developing institutional infrastructure to engage students and support their learning are highlighted
Revitalizing (career) counseling in education to help all people who are able and willing to work redesign their career-lives and find sustainable decent work
Editorial message from Guest Editor : Special Issue: Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences 2022Fundamental changes in the world of work are leaving many workers insecure and uncertain about their future. The situation is aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has resulted in billions of job losses globally (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2020). According to the International Labor Organization (ILO, 2020), approximately 1.6 billion people in the informal sector are among those who have lost their jobs. This has led to greater uncertainty in occupational contexts, which have already been unsettled by increasing job changes (Hooley et al., 2020; Kelly, 2020). Work environments are no longer able to ‘hold’ (Winnicott, 1965) workers, leaving them insecure, traumatized, and without any sense of meaning and purpose in their work-lives. Numerous changes in the workplace (largely the effect of technological advances) have compelled workers to reconsider, reconstruct, and redesign their lives to improve their chances of finding sustainable, decent work (Di Fabio & Maree, 2016; Duarte & Cardoso, 2015; Guichard, 2018; Hartung, 2016, 2018, 2019; Ribeiro, 2016; Rossier, 2015a, 2015b; Savickas, 2007, 2019; Savickas & Savickas, 2020; UN, 2016).https://un-pub.eu/ojs/index.php/cjesam2023Educational Psycholog
