Truth After cinema: The explosion of facts in the documentary films of Jia Zhangke

Copyright @ 2013 Intellect Books.This article identifies and elaborates on two models of resistance evident in JiaZhangke’s film corpus. The deployment of different cinematic strategies produces an experimental calling into question of the value of truth and of truth as value. In the films here analysed Jia moves from resistance through organic observation to a model of resistance structured around a series of fabulations. If the first regime addresses the truth of ideology, then the target of the second is the ideology of truth. It is in this passage that Jia enters political cinema, collapsing the distinction between factual and fictional and opening up a space that belongs to no collectivity
Using a Threading-Followed-by-Swelling Approach to Synthesize [2]Rotaxanes
We have developed a “threading-followed-by-swelling” protocol to synthesize [2]rotaxanes efficiently and atom-economically. Our protocol employs cis-1-[(Z)-alk-1′-enyl]-2-vinylcyclopropane units as the termini of the threadlike component; these end groups are converted into more-sizable cycloheptadiene motifs, which function as stopper units, through Cope rearrangements at elevated temperature. We used this approach to synthesize [2]rotaxanes in good yield from [2]pseudorotaxanes featuring either one or two swellable termini to interlock three different types of macrocycle. The chiral centers created by the swelling process were “erased” by hydrogenating the cycloheptadiene termini into the corresponding cycloheptane units, affording achiral molecular [2]rotaxanes as the only final products

The first woman to graduate from our faculty, then known as ‘Vliegtuigbouwkunde’ (Aeronautical engineering) was Koo Siu Ling. She was an international student from Indonesia of Chinese descent. When she registered to study ‘Vliegtuigbouwkunde’, it made the newspapers, both in the Netherlands and in Indonesia. Bioanalysis Young Investigator: Jia Li
Supervisor’s supporting comments I supervised Jia Li during her PhD research on the metabolic characterization of host–parasite interactions. Jia excelled at the analytical chemistry components of her thesis and specialized in the integration of multiplatform data (NMR, UPLC–MS, CE–MS and 454 data). Since obtaining her PhD (2009), she has achieved a prestigious Imperial College Junior Research Fellowship and has focused on applying data integration techniques to investigate mechanisms of bariatric surgery. To date she has 16 publications in journals including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Molecular Systems Biology and Gut, many as first author. Her achievements include the characterization of multicompartmental changes in Schistosoma mansoni infected mice and the metabolic characterization of bariatric surgery in rats. She used NMR spectroscopic analysis, hierarchical principal component analysis and partial least square discriminant analysis to create systems level models of parasitic infection, and subsequently developed a CE method to validate the biomarkers. For the bariatric surgery model she applied a combination of UPLC–MS and NMR methods for profiling biofluids and related them to changes in the fecal microbiome profiled using 454 sequencing. She has presented her work at international conferences and has developed a network of external collaborations. Jia is an excellent role model; she is genuinely innovative and motivated, and has a flair for analytical technology. </jats:p

Designing role-based view for object-relational databases
In a federated database system, a view mechanism is crucial since it is used to define exportable subsets of data ; to perform a virtual restructuring d ataset; and to construct the integrated schema. The view service in federated databa se systems must be capable of retaining as much semantic information as possible. The object-oriented ( 0 - 0 ) model was considered the suitable canonical data model since it meets the original criteria for canonical model selection. However, with the emergence of stronger object-relational (0 -R ) model, the re is a clear argument for using an 0 - R canonical model in the federation. Hence, research should now focus on th e development of semantically powerful view mechanism for th e newer model. Meanwhile, the availability of real 0 -R technologies offers researchers the opportunity to develop different forms of view mechanisms.
The concept of roles has been widely studied in 0 - 0 modelling and development. The role model represents some characteristics that the traditional 0-0 model lacked, such as object migration, multiple occurrences and context-dependent access. While many forms of 0-0 views were designed for the 0-0 canonical model, one option was to extend the 0-0 model to incorporate a role model. In a role model, the real entity is modelled in the form of a role rather than an object. An object represents the permanent properties of an entity is a root object; and an object represents the temporary properties of an entity is a role object.
The contribution of this research is to design a view system that employees the concept of roles for the 0 -R canonical model in a federated database system. In this thesis, an examination of the current 0 -R metamodel is provided first in order to provide an environment for recognising the roleview metadata and measuring the view performance; then a Roleview Definition Language (RDL) is introduced, along with the semantics for defining virtual classes and generating virtua l extents; finally, a working prototype is provided to prove th e role-based view system is implementable and the syntax is semantically correct
