She highlights as well some relevant and inspiring experiences, such as the one she promoted in the African continent. Finally, she reflects on some challenges of research in internationalization, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary investigations based on evidence on different dimensions of Higher EducationEste artículo presenta una entrevista con Jane Knight, profesora del Ontario Institute for Studies in Education(OISE-University of Toronto), realizada en juniode 21019, durante el evento “Shaping Sustainable Futures for Internationalization in Higher Education”, donde la profesora Knight estuvo entre los principales conferencistas. The archaeoacoustics of San Vitale, Ravenna
This research tests and assesses whether sixth-century social and cultural dynamics can be archaeologically identified by including the study of acoustics in the context of extant Late Antique Christian architecture, namely the centrally planned domed octagonal church of San Vitale at Ravenna. Implementing a holistic archaeological research strategy that includes human sensory perception of acoustical phenomena is the best approach to unravelling the complexities of social and cultural mechanisms operating in the sixth-century Mediterranean basin. The methods and issues of Archaeoacoustics are critiqued and developed in order to comment on the intentionality of acoustic attributes in sixth-century ecclesiastical architecture. The space syntax of San Vitale has been considered for isovists at key locations during the liturgical procession and sequence of the Mass celebration. These are compared with mapped areas of perceiving the acoustic characteristics of Clarity and Reverberation Time. Combining the visual and acoustic analysis of San Vitale, with a better understanding of its date and construction phases, the physical geometry and temporal logic of the church are discussed in relation to the reflexive exchange of influence between Ravenna, Milan and Constantinople. It is posited that liturgical and musical time and tempo is materially expressed in the evident and conceptual substance of San Vitale, a suggestion that offers a springboard for future study and debate
Frank H. Knight on Market Thinking : Reflections on the Logic and Ethics of the Capitalist Economy
Technical ReportThe purpose of this paper is to shed a new light on the working and performance of the market economy from a pluralistic viewpoint. To this end, we first pay attention to the general equilibrium theory a la L.W. McKenzie, K. J. Arrow and G. Debreu. Whereas this theory seems to be established on the foundation of solid logic and advanced mathematics, the existence of special ethics and ideology behind the scenes should not be forgotten. We next reexamine the thought of Frank H. Knight, who has raised an strong objection against glorification of the market economy.
In the late 1960s, I was a graduate student at the University of Rochester. I still recall the touching moment when Professor McKenzie, finally succeeding after a long struggle to prove the existence of a competitive economy by help of a mathematical theorem of fixed point, posed a bit in a class and said quietly, "It' so beautiful! ". The world was then in the midst of Cold War and divided into the two powerful blocs, the socialist bloc dominated by the Soviet Union and the capitalist block led by the United States of America. McKenzie's complacent whispering sounded like the victory declaration of capitalism over socialism.
Around 40 years have passed since then. It seems that the "academic Cold War" between Marxian economics and modern economics is now over. At the same time, the ethics and ideology of general equilibrium looks surely fading away although it is not completely vanished. It is our regret, however, the new, synthetic social science which can replace the existing dogmatic doctrines are not in sight yet. A completely new approach like a second Knight or a second Keynes would urgently be needed.CRR Discussion Paper, Series A, No. A-22, pp. 1-28technical repor
Frank Knight, Max Weber, Chicago Economics, e Institutionalism
This essay shows the influence of Max Weber on Frank Knight’s interest in combining economic theory and comparative economic history. In the interwar period –when the teaching of economics had a pluralistic character–Knight opposed institutionalism and defended the scientific status of neoclassical theory, but his readings of Weber Knight led him to regard equilibrium and perfect competition as “ideal types,” constructs useful for theorizing but never observed in reality. They help to identify the central elements, but the study of how they change is not the object of theory. One must then turn to history, in which changes do not resemble equilibria. In the postwar period a new scientific standard appeared, which redefined the discipline and relegated Knight’s work to the non-scientific realm of “social philosophy”Este ensayo muestra la influencia de Max Weber en el interés de Frank Knight por combinar la teoría económica y la historia económica comparada.
