Innovation, endogenous overinvestment, and incentive pay

    No full text
We analyze how two key managerial tasks interact: that of growing the business through creating new investment opportunities and that of providing accurate information about these opportunities in the corporate budgeting process. We show how this interaction endogenously biases managers toward overinvesting in their own projects. This bias is exacerbated if managers compete for limited resources in an internal capital market, which provides us with a novel theory of the boundaries of the firm. Finally, managers of more risky and less profitable divisions should obtain steeper incentives to facilitate efficient investment decisions

    Financing a portfolio of projects

    No full text
This article shows that investors financing a portfolio of projects may use the depth of their financial pockets to overcome entrepreneurial incentive problems. Competition for scarce informed capital at the refinancing stage strengthens investors’ bargaining positions. And yet, entrepreneurs’ incentives may be improved, because projects funded by investors with ‘‘shallow pockets’’ must have not only a positive net present value at the refinancing stage, but one that is higher than that of competing portfolio projects. Our article may help understand provisions used in venture capital finance that limit a fund’s initial capital and make it difficult to add more capital once the initial venture capital fund is raised. Variability of the ice nuclei concentration over Central Europe

    No full text
The topic of this cumulative thesis is the variability of the concentration of atmospheric ice nuclei (IN), a sub-group of the atmospheric aerosol, that plays a central role in the process of ice-formation in clouds. The measurements of the IN number concentration at a mountain station (Kleiner Feldberg, near Frankfurt am Main) with a static vacuum-diffusion chamber are discussed. The measuring system is described in detail. In addition the thesis includes an analysis and an appraisal of the results for Central Europe, using amongst others backward-trajectories and correlation-analysis with aerosol-physical parameters. A significant influence of long range transport of desert dust to Europe on the ice nuclei concentration is being detected

The role of imagination in Bergman, Klein and Sartre

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel UniversityThis thesis provides an inter-disciplinary study of selected works by Ingmar Bergman. I explore how key concepts from Melanie Klein and Jean-Paul Sartre apply to the focus on characters in a state of heightened imagination; and the value placed on imagination in the construction of these films. This involves recognition of the way an active response from the viewer is encouraged. Klein, Sartre and Bergman also attend to contextual factors that challenge any notion of subjectivity as sovereign and the power of imagination is frequently placed in a social context. All three figures develop their ideas within specialised fields drawing on the influence of others. Chapter 2 shows how Klein’s ideas relate to the influence of Freud before exploring how her work can be applied to Bergman’s films through the example of Wild Strawberries. Chapter 3 concentrates on Sartre’s early work, The Imaginary and considers how this is significant in relation to some of Sartre’s better-known philosophical ideas developed during and after the Second World War. These ideas will lead to an exploration of The Seventh Seal. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 focus on three films from distinct parts of Bergman’s career: Summer with Monika, The Virgin Spring and Hour of the Wolf. In Chapter 4 this will be preceded by a brief over-view of three more films from the early part of Bergman’s career. These chapters explore how Kleinian and Sartrean ideas can be incorporated in close analysis, and alongside selected critical responses to the films. The analysis integrates key points from Klein and Sartre in a methodology specific to film studies. This will include analysis of cinematic elements such as camera work and lighting, and recognition of narrative structure and character developmen

The Network of Innovators in Jena: An Application of Social Network Analysis

    No full text
We apply social network analysis methods to describe the evolution of the innovator network of Jena, Germany in the period from 1995 to 2001. We find this evolution to be directed towards an increasing focus on core competencies of the local innovation system. Further we analyze the network resulting from R&D cooperations and explain - by means of network regression techniques - that the job mobility of scientists and the technological overlap between the actors, rather than past cooperations, can best predict the resulting structure. We also observe an increasing importance of the university while the former "Kombinate" begin to lose their prominent role.Innovator Networks, Network Regression, Local Innovation Systems, R+D Cooperation, Research University

Replication Data for: Are Sleepy Punishers Really Harsh Punishers?: Comment

    No full text
This data set contains data (USSCdata.dta) and a script (Spamann_comment_Cho_dataanalysis.do) to recreate models 2,3, 5, and 6 of table 1 in Holger Spamann, Are Sleepy Punishers Really Harsh Punishers?: Comment, Psychological Science (forthcoming 2017). It also contains the raw data from the USSC (opafy92nid.dta through opafy03nid.dta), the USSC's codebooks explaining those data, and a second script (Spamann_comment_Cho_dataassembly_forweb.do) that generates USSCdata.dta from this raw data. The data and scripts are written for Stata (version 14). The analysis script calls user-written packages estout and reghdfe. Note that the scripts build and analyze ALL data mentioned in my article (i.e., not only models 2, 3, 5, and 6). The other data are available from: (a) TRAC data: by emailing [email protected] (TRAC will provide the data only to researchers affiliated with subscriber institutions); (b) Cho et al.’s original data: from the lead author of the original article, Kyoungmin Cho (I do not have permission to share their data). If you do not have access to the other data or want to restrict your work to the USSC data, you should comment out the parts of the script concerning other data. More information on running the scripts is contained in their first lines
