Genetic variation and population structure in wild isolates of Caenorhabditis elegans collected from California

    No full text
Though much widespread in distribution, the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans exhibits low levels of genetic variation at the DNA sequence level, a paradox which may be partly explained by its typical self-fertilization mode of reproduction. However recent work on the genetic structure of natural populations of C. elegans from France, Scotland and Portugal suggests a substantial level of outcrossing together with finding of a very strong local population structure. To find out whether this same occurrence extrapolates to other wild isolates of worm populations, the present study was carried on worm populations from California. Here, genetic variation is studied by detecting single nucleotide polymorphisms in a random genome-wide manner using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism analysis (AFLP). The worms used in this study are natural isolates of C. elegans collected from parks and gardens around the Los Angeles area in southern California. Some populations sampled were a few meters apart, enabling the assessment of variation and population structure on a very local scale. As previous studies, a low overall genetic diversity was found with these worm populations. The finding of a strong population structure and high linkage disequilibrium both within and between chromosomes was also concurrent with the findings from other wild isolates. All these findings elucidate the extra-ordinary evolutionary dynamics of these sets of worm from the wild.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 38-41)

Purpose of Project: In the United States, the prevalence of pediatric obesity continues to increase and with appropriate identification and management by primary care clinicians can be prevented. The purpose of this project is to identify current practice guidelines, gaps in knowledge, and systemic barriers in the primary care setting to reduce the prevalence of pediatric obesity. Methodology: Quantitative, needs assessment survey distributed to a large health care system located in central New Jersey. Outcomes measured were clinicians’ knowledge in identification, perspectives’, protentional barriers, and management of overweight and obesity in the pediatric primary care setting. Results: Out of the 125 providers, 17.6% (n= 22) completed or impartially completed the survey. Identification of measurement for child's weight and height for age and sex and documentation on CDC growth charts was completed 95% at each well visit. Findings include lack of pediatric clinicians’ competency in addressing and managing obese patients and addressing concerns with parents. Significant barriers in the management of pediatric overweight obesity and perceived needs for additional training were also identified. Implications for Practice: An educational pamphlet has been developed and implemented for clinicians and parents in the primary care setting to improve the gaps of knowledge. A revised survey will be redistributed to identify gaps in management in the primary care setting. Further implications in research in the knowledge and perceptions of primary care clinicians is necessary identify the barriers in management of overweight and obesity in the pediatric population.D.N.P.Includes bibliographical reference

Alexander the Great: A Historiography of Power

    No full text
This thesis tackles a central question in the historiography of Alexander the Great: why has the scholarship about him changed so wildly over the centuries? The answer put forward in this thesis is that definitions of power are the driving agent behind the ever-changing nature of Alexander scholarship. Over time and across cultures, the "correct" use of power has shifted dramatically, and the way Alexander has been written about has shifted accordingly. This thesis, then, analyzes sixteen authors, spanning centuries of scholarship, and traces how the authors' contexts may have influenced their view of power and how, in turn, that view may have influenced their accounts of Alexander's life. The thesis begins by exploring the issues with the source material about Alexander the Great and what scholars know about the lost, primary sources. The first chapter discusses the authors of the five ancient extant written accounts of Alexander: Diodorus Siculus, Quintus Curtius Rufus, Plutarch, Arrian, and Pompeius Trogus/Justin. The second chapter covers a large expanse of time, beginning with the Alexander Romance as a transmission agent for Alexander scholarship through the Middle Ages. It identifies Machiavelli's Prince as the first place that Alexander reemerges as a historical, not legendary figure. From this point on, it analyzes Samuel Clarke, Charles Rollin, Montesquieu, and Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos. With this last author, the thesis considers how he stands against the near-contemporary example of George Grote. The third chapter moves into the twentieth century. Beginning with William Woodthorpe Tarn and his belief in Alexander's proclamation of the brotherhood of all mankind, the thesis traces the specific impact of events like the First and Second World Wars, the creation of the League of Nations, and the politics of the Soviet Union on Alexander scholarship. This is evident in the scholarship of Ernst Badian, Peter Green, and AB Bosworth, who, in the context of leaders like Hitler and Stalin, see power of the sort that Alexander wields as tyrannical and corrupting. NGL Hammond, the last author featured in this thesis, presents a counterargument against these more negative interpretations, returning to the idealism of Tarn. These sixteen authors, though each existing in very different contexts and representing very different beliefs, all similarly display how definitions of power deeply influence their opinions about Alexander and the purposes they have for creating an account of his life.History, Department ofHonors Colleg

    No full text
This study entitled “Power Relation In Jacques Lob’s Snowpiercer” is about social issues between passengers in front sections to tail sections, depicted through the story and characters in this novel. In this study, there are two questions to be answered: The forms of power relationships shown in Jacques Lob's novel Snowpiercer and the individuals involved. The purpose of this study is to look at the many forms of power relationships and the persons that are involved in them using numerous characters from the novel. The author applies Michel Foucault's (1977) theory to illustrate how passengers in front and back sections interact in terms of power. The descriptive technique is used in this study, and extrinsic approaches are used. The findings reveal that there are two distinct forms of power relationships. To begin with, sovereign power is a sort of authority that has total control over all persons in a community. Second, disciplinary authority seeks to establish discipline bodies. The outcome also exposes that certain characters have manipulated information and truth via the use of power relationships

H.E.L.P : A creative exercise in feminism and the buddy comedy.

    No full text
This screenplay attempts to reconcile the author\u27s confusion on how to best enact social progress by examining and satirizing several competing feminist movements. Set in an off-kilter Los Angeles, the comedy tracks Alivia, a recent PhD grad who cannot leverage her education toward finding a job. In desperation, she joins a radical organization called the H.E.L.P. (Heroines for the Elimination of Loathsome Professors), which encourages her to take matters into her own hands. Inverting tropes from buddy comedies, cop-shows, ghost stories, and Bond movies, the screenplay grapples with how women are meant to break the glass ceiling and it may never fully come to an answer. In its current form, the screenplay is messy and unfocused; it is the hope of the author that the screenplay shows the active process of integrating academic discourse into an extremely silly comedy

Recreational therapy: a related service addressing perceived leisure deficits in primary special education

Access to education provides many benefits and opportunities for an individual and the community in which they reside. Making access to education to all humans, regardless of race, sex, disability, or socioeconomic status, in everyone's best interest in a community. Before 1975, many states in the United States of America prohibited children that were blind, deaf, emotionally disturbed, or mentally retarded from attending public school, in fact only one in five children with an identified disability was able to attend public school in this time (Aaron & Loprest, 2012). In 1975, federal law was created to ensure access for students with disabilities over the years this law was amended and renamed into what we know today as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensuring that children with disabilities in the United States are guaranteed free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE) (IDEA, 2004). This law established the framework for a system for children with disabilities to access education via Special Education and Related Services. Laudan Aron and Pamela Loprest author the article "Disability and the Education System," in 2012 assessing how well the nations education system is serving students with disabilities. Their work unveils the financial issues that create the imbalance of what school districts can afford to provide and what a child may need to access FAPE in and LRE leading to these students being behind and often held to lower expectations than their non-disabled peers (Aron, & Loprest 2012). Access to public education is a civil right in the United States of America together those responsible for serving students within the education system must identify and craft solutions to improve our public education system. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess if the perceived leisure and recreation deficits of students within Special Education make a case for these students to receive Recreational Therapy services as a related service on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to help them access FAPE in and LRE. The perceptions of deficits are captured through the lens of the Special Education Teacher via a survey tool. Data for this study was collected by the researcher using a virtual quantitative survey designed within Qualtrics and distributed through email to school districts within California, Twin Rivers Unified School District, Sacramento County office of Education, Sacramento City Unified School District, El Dorado Union High School District, and Elk Grove Unified School District. The survey tool used is a sixteen-question instrument designed to measure Special Education Teachers perceptions of leisure deficits about their students. In analyzing the data, the findings identified that the Special Education Teachers perceived that Recreational Therapy would benefit students receiving special education services. One hundred percent of the respondents identified that students would benefit from assistance with developing various leisure skills that a Recreational Therapist is qualified to address in their practice
