    "Knowing that most interracial and international adoptions send children of color into Western Caucasian families, the artist and activist kimura byol-nathalie lemoine wanted to present another vision of what interracial adoption could be. To realize this, the artist Kim Waldron and kimura-lemoine decided to stage photographs of everyday life and key moments of the journey of a fictitious adoption. These photographs tell the story of a Caucasian woman adopted into a Canadian family of Korean descent. By this reversal, these images, at first sight banal, become interesting and intriguing here. The Kim Kim project elaborates Kim Waldron’s previous photographic and video work that incorporates self-portraiture into fictitious situations in order to challenge aspects of identity and social conditioning. Her photographic work uses a documentary aesthetic to make fictional propositions credible. This collaboration with kimura-lemoine uses the aesthetics of family photographs, a Korean family whose surname is Kim and Kim Waldron’s birth parents to create an imaginary and improbable tale of international adoption." -- Artexte website

    Modern Airline Pilots\u27 Quandary: Standard Operating Procedures—to Comply or Not to Comply

    Modern airline pilots are tasked every flight with the safe and efficient operation of highly automated airliners in today’s complicated global and economic environments. Airlines have developed standard operating procedures (SOP) for normal, abnormal, and emergency operations. These procedures serve as a script for crews to follow. These procedures are designed by airlines to ensure that aircraft are operated in the (1) most safe, (2) most efficient, and (3) most on-time manner. For the most part pilots will comply with SOP, but when they (1) don9t agree with SOP, (2) don9t understand SOP or the risks associated with not complying with SOP, or (3) don9t feel adequately trained to know what SOP is, it is difficult to motivate them to comply. Airlines have the means to measure compliance through Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) and Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA). The purpose of this research is to determine if increased understanding, knowledge and awareness of the risk of noncompliance with SOP increase airline pilots’ compliance with SOP. This research explores data from line checks at a major US airline that was gathered in pursuit of understanding what drives SOP compliance. Baseline data was gathered and analyzed to determine the top 12 noncompliant items. The airline provided training during the Human Factors module in each pilots recurrent training on Pilot Intentional Non Compliance (PINC). The training including developing pilots’ understanding that while most Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) reports grant pilots immunity from legal action, if a violation is labeled PINC, ASAP protections do not apply. Further line checks were conducted after the pilots received the PINC training. The top 12 noncompliant items from the pre-PINC training group were compared to the same 12 items in the post-PINC training group. Significant improvement in SOP compliance was found in six of the 12 items tested. The results established that training pilots on the risk of PINC did significantly increase SOP compliance

    SOP1_1, SOP2_2, and antichain tree property

    In this paper, we study some tree properties and their related indiscernibilities. First, we prove that SOP2_2 can be witnessed by a formula with a tree of tuples holding 'arbitrary homogeneous inconsistency' (e.g., weak k-TP1_1 conditions or other possible inconsistency configurations). And we introduce a notion of tree-indiscernibility, which preserves witnesses of SOP1_1, and by using this, we investigate the problem of (in)equality of SOP1_1 and SOP2_2. Assuming the existence of a formula having SOP1_1 such that no finite conjunction of it has SOP2_2, we observe that the formula must witness some tree-property-like phenomenon, which we will call the antichain tree property (ATP, see Definition 4.1). We show that ATP implies SOP1_1 and TP2_2, but the converse of each implication does not hold. So the class of NATP theories (theories without ATP) contains the class of NSOP1_1 theories and the class of NTP2_2 theories. At the end of the paper, we construct a structure whose theory has a formula having ATP, but any conjunction of the formula does not have SOP2_2. So this example shows that SOP1_1 and SOP2_2 are not the same at the level of formulas, i.e., there is a formula having SOP1_1, while any finite conjunction of it does not witness SOP2_2 (but a variation of the formula still has SOP2_2).Comment: Fixed incorrect statement numbers when citing references.     Analysis of Noise Coupling From a Power Distribution Network to Signal Traces in High-Speed Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards

    As layout density increases in highly integrated multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs), the noise that exists in the power distribution network (PDN) is increasingly coupled to the signal traces, and precise modeling to describe the coupling phenomenon becomes necessary. This paper presents a model to describe noise coupling between the power/ground planes and signal traces in multilayer systems. An analytical model for the coupling has been successfully derived, and the coupling mechanism was rigorously analyzed and clarified. Wave equations for a signal trace with power/ground noise were solved by imposing boundary conditions. Measurements in both the frequency and time domains have been conducted to confirm the validity of the proposed model

    Factors governing seawater carbonate dynamics in a macroalgal habitat

    Photosynthetic organisms shift the dynamics of surface pCO2 driven by the sea surface temperature change (thermodynamic driver) by assimilating inorganic C from seawater. Here we measured net C uptake in a macroalgal habitat of coastal Korea for two years (2019-2020) and found that the macroalgal habitat contributed 5.8 g C m−2 month−1 of the net C uptake during the growing period (the cooling period, September−May). This massive C uptake changed the thermodynamics-driven seasonal dynamics such that the air−sea equilibrium of pCO2 was pushed into disequilibrium. The surface pCO2 dynamics during the cooling period was mostly influenced by the seasonal decrease in temperature and the proliferation of macroalgae, while the dynamics during the warming period (the stagnant period, June−August) closely followed that predicted based solely on the change in sea surface temperature (thermodynamic driver). In contrast to the phytoplankton-dominated off-shore waters (where phytoplankton populations are large in spring and summer), the impact of coastal macroalgae on surface pCO2 dynamics was most pronounced during the cooling period, when the magnitude of pCO2 change was as much as twice that resulting from temperature change. Our study shows that the distinctive features of the macroalgal habitat—in particular the seasonal temperature extremes (~18°C difference), the active macroalgal metabolism, and anthropogenic nutrient inputs—collectively influenced the seasonal decoupling of seawater and air pCO2 dynamics.
