The Strategies for Simple One-Point Ko Situation of Computer Go
No full text[[abstract]]Ko plays a very important role in Go, but most computer Go programs still cannot handle ko fights so far. Utilizing the principle of Minimax procedure, we obtain the best strategies for the simple one-point ko situation, enabling computer Go programs to gain maximum or loss minimum profit when dealing with the simple one-point ko situation. We also discuss in detail the strategies for using ko threats during the process of the ko fight.

Laminar burning velocity predictions by meso-scale flames in an annular diverging tube
No full textFlame behavior in an annular diverging tube (ADT) consisting of an outer quartz tube and a tapered inner core column was investigated as a basic model for small combustion devices of various combustion space scales. Flames can be stabilized at suitable locations where the mean flow velocity is matched to the spatial average propagation velocity (SAPV). Transient variations of wall temperature and the SAPV were compared for various experimental parameters: inner core materials, burner configurations, and flow rates. It was found that a critical propagation velocity (CPV) exists that is least affected by the flow rates. The CPVs of methane, propane, and dimethyl ether (DME) were measured and a good agreement was shown between the measured CPVs and the laminar burning velocities presented in the literatures. Therefore, the ADT method can be a model for small combustion devices of various combustion space scales; furthermore, this study can be beneficial in designing and operating small combustion devices. The ADT method can also be applied in the field for in situ monitoring of the burning velocities. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

The Operational Code of Kim Jong-Un: Seeking Effective Diplomacy
No full textKim Jong Un’s sudden ascent to power reflected the untimely departure of his predecessor, Kim Jong Il. For the people of North Korea as well as the rest of the world, his modus operandi has only slowly begun to reveal itself with time. While qualitative analyses based on his political movements exist, there is little to no quantitatively based literature that ties him to particular tendencies as a political actor. This thesis explores those tendencies and offers a comparatively useful operational code by analyzing six New Year’s speeches from 2013 to 2018. By building on a former study by Dr. Joseph Bond (1990) in which he gave operational codes to both Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung, this thesis utilizes his methodology of operational code analysis and develops a more cohesive picture of the enigmatic leader of North Korea, offering a comparative analysis of his tendencies as compared to that of his predecessors. Kim Jong-Un had a mere three before being thrust to the helm of the DPRK, which suggests that he is still trying to consolidate power. This thesis explores this intent with respects to his operational code, testing first for salience and consistency of his operational code, then provides a comparative assessment to the other two Kim’s. Comparative analysis reveals Kim Jong Un preferences in terms of a consolidation strategy to be largely antithetical to that of Kim Jong Il, investing in economic growth as opposed to his father’s ‘Military First’ strategy. Findings also suggest that he is far more similar to his grandfather, Kim Il Sung, in his approach to the political arena, which provides clues as to engagement strategies for future diplomacy.International Relation
Synergetic analysis of spatio-temporal EEG patterns: Alzheimers disease
No full textA spatio-temporal analysis has been employed on EEG signals recorded in groups of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The so-called Karhunen-Loeve analysis method was applied to four groups of subjects: 12 patients who were diagnosed as having severe AD, 8 mild AD patients, 10 vascular dementia patients, and 10 normal aged controls, to obtain the spatio-temporal eigenpatterns. The local difference of the global EEG pattern in mild AD patients from that of normal controls was expanded to the frontal regions in the case of severe AD. The analysis showed significant bilateral temporal functioning differences and interhemispheric connection difficulty, along with remarkable intra-hemispheric correlation in severe AD patients. Compared to the normal controls, severe AD patients' brains exhibit only weak local connections and correlations, resulting into limited harmonious inter-hemispheric information processing. The results from the spatio-temporal EEG study of AD patients can be considered to be due to a change in the relative activity of the brain corresponding to the pathologic variation in AD, and the results are in accordance with reported clinical studies
