Ek duniyā alag sī Narrative strategies and Adivasi representation in the short stories of Vinod Kumar
This paper investigates the narrative strategies of representation used by the Indian author Vinod Kumar in his literary writing about the life and spaces of the Adivasi. The focal point of this study consists in the fact that the author is a non-Adivasi, thus placing him and his writing in the center of a very much debated issue of Hindi literature i.e. the polarity between the writing through sympathy (Hindi sahānubhūti) and the writing through personal experience (anubhūti). This study-case looks at how the author, being a dikū, an outsider describes the ‘other’ (i.e. the Adivasi). The results show that the author’s representation of the Adivasi, based on a solid empirical knowledge of his ‘other’, contains some elements of romanticism revealing both his outsideness and a strong empathy for the ‘other’.Masteruppsats i indologi 2019</p
Bollywood cinema: A critical genealogy
"Bollywood" has finally made it to the Oxford English Dictionary. The 2005 edition defines it as: "a name for the Indian popular film industry, based in Bombay. Origin 1970s. Blend of Bombay and Hollywood." The incorporation of the word in the OED acknowledges the strength of a film industry which, with the coming of sound in 1931, has produced some 9,000 films. (This must not be confused with the output of Indian cinema generally, which would be four times more). What is less evident from the OED definition is the way in which the word has acquired its current meaning and has displaced its earlier descriptors (Bombay Cinema, Indian Popular Cinema, Hindi Cinema), functioning, perhaps even horrifyingly, as an "empty signifier" (Prasad) that may be variously used for a reading of popular Indian cinema. The triumph of the term (over the others) is nothing less than spectacular and indicates, furthermore, the growing global sweep of this cinema not just as cinema qua cinema but as cinema qua social effects and national cultural coding. Although Indian film producers in particular, and pockets of Indian spectators generally, continue to feel uneasy with it (the vernacular press came around to using "Bollywood" only reluctantly), its ascendancy has been such that Bombay Dreams (the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical) and the homegrown Merchants of Bollywood both become signifiers of a cultural logic which transcends cinema and is a global marker of Indian modernity. As the Melbourne (March 2006) closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games showed, Bollywood will be the cultural practice through which Indian national culture will be projected when the games are held in Delhi in 2010. International games (the Olympics, World Cup Soccer, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and so on) are often expressions of a nation's own emerging modernity. Discussion. This new species shows similarities with T. (T.) bijui sp. nov. in the following characters: dorsal side of pronotum with transverse carina complete over middle section, lateral side of pronotum with distinct trans discal groove, Gs 2 without anterior transverse carina, hind basitarsus without groove, and tricarinate areola of dorsal side of propodeum but this new species distinctly differs from T. (T.) bijui sp. nov. in the following characters: dorsal side of propodeum without submarginal carina (in T. (T.) bijui sp. nov., dorsal side of propodeum with submarginal carina); carina of areola not margined by crenulations (in T. (T.) bijui sp. nov., carina of areola margined by crenulations); wings yellowish hyaline (in T. (T.) bijui sp. nov., wings brown infumated); larger species (13–16 mm) (in T. Improvement of Basmati rice varieties for resistance to blast andbacterial blight diseases using marker assisted backcross breeding
Marker assisted backcross breeding was employed to incorporate the blast resistance genes, Pi2 and Pi54 and bacterial blight (BB) resistance genes xa13 and Xa21 into the genetic background of Pusa Basmati 1121 (PB1121) and Pusa Basmati 6. Foreground selection for target gene(s) was followed by arduous phenotypic and background selection which fast-tracked the recovery of recurrent parent genome (RPG) to an extent of 95.8% in one of the near-isogenic lines (NILs) namely, Pusa 1728-23-33-31-56, which also showed high degree of resemblance to recurrent parent, PB6 in phenotype. The phenotypic selection prior to background selection provided an additional opportunity for identifying the novel recombinants viz., Pusa 1884-9-12-14 and Pusa 1884-3-9-175, superior to parental lines in terms of early maturity, higher yield and improved quality parameters. There was no significant difference between the RPG recovery estimated based on SSR or SNP markers, however, the panel of SNPs markers was considered as the better choice for background selection as it provided better genome coverage and included SNPs in the genic regions. Multi-location evaluation of NILs depicted their stable and high mean performance in comparison to the respective recurrent parents. The Pi2 + Pi54 carrying NILs were effective in combating a pan-India panel of Magnaporthe oryzae isolates with high level of field resistance in northern, eastern and southern parts of India. Alongside, the PB1121-NILs and PB6-NILs carrying BB resistance genes xa13+Xa21 were resistant against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae races of north-western, southern and eastern parts of the country. The pH of food and drink affects its taste, the pH of medicine determines its effectiveness and the pH of dye affects the colour and uptake of dye by the fabric. The glass pH electrode has been accepted in the standard industrial workhorse tool for pH measurements.Ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) is a microelectronic device in which the hydronium ion concentration in the solution produces agate potential modulating the electric charge carrier flow between the source and drain terminals. The present paper describes the fabrication of ISFET, starting with P-type silicon wafer and up to the packaging stage.
