Visible-light-responsive ZnCuO nanoparticles: benign photodynamic killers of infectious protozoans

Recently, there has been a great interest in developing biocompatible nanostructures to deal with infectious agents. This study investigated benign ZnCuO nanostructures that were visible-light-responsive due to the resident copper in the lattice. The nanostructures were synthesized through a size-controlled hot-injection process, which was adaptable to the surface ligation processes. The nanostructures were then characterized through transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, diffused reflectance spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering, and photoluminescence analysis to measure crystallite nature, size, luminescence, composition, and band-gap analyses. Antiprotozoal efficiency of the current nanoparticles revealed the photodynamic killing of Leishmania protozoan, thus acting as efficient metal-based photosensitizers. The crystalline nanoparticles showed good biocompatibility when tested for macrophage toxicity and in hemolysis assays. The study opens a wide avenue for using toxic material in resident nontoxic forms as an effective antiprotozoal treatment. Keywords: zinc oxide, nanoparticles, doping, photodynamic therapy, Leishmani
University students' views about compatibility of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) with their personal, social and religious values (a study from Pakistan)
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) in its current form might not be applicable in non Western cultures. Differences between Western and non Western cultures have been reported widely. Psychotherapy was developed in the West and is underpinned by many beliefs which might be specific only to the Western culture. However, in order to modify CBT, we need to understand whether the concepts associated with the CBT might cause conflicts among people who receive therapy. This study explored the beliefs of the university students in Pakistan to find out if the concepts underpinning CBT are consistent with the personal, family, socio-cultural and religious values of the university students. Discussions were held with University students in Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan. Students were given information on various aspects of the CBT and were asked to rate their agreement with these concepts on a visual analogue scale. There was little disagreement for the principles of CBT for personal values, while some disagreement existed for religious values. This study highlights the value of assessing peoples’ beliefs about acceptability of CBT in non Western cultures. Students in Pakistan felt that the principles of CBT are consistent with their belief system in most areas. However, the value system of students might not be representative of the rest of the population
Development of Southampton adaptation framework for CBT (SAF-CBT): a framework for adaptation of CBT in non-western culture
To develop guidelines for adaptation of CBT in Pakistan. Design: Mixed methods ( both qualitative and quantitative). Place and Duration of Study: The studies were carried out in two cities in Pakistan, Rahim Yar Khan and Lahore, between October 2006 and March 2009. Subjects and Methods: We conducted in depth interviews with psychologists and with depressed patients and group discussions with University students. A thematic content analysis of information from these interviews and field and therapy notes was carried out to develop guidelines. Results: Themes and subthemes from different studies were compared with each other as well as with information gleaned from field and therapy notes. This information was organized in the form of an adaptation frame work. The framework consists of three themes; culture, capacity and cognitions, with each theme further divided into seven subthemes. This framework guided development of a culturally sensitive CBT manual which was later tested in a pilot project and adapted CBT was found to be effective in reducing symptoms of depression in Pakistan. Conclusion: Our work confirms some of the factors described for adaptation of therapy in previous guidelines which were developed in the West. However, we found that factors in addition to therapy itself need to be considered when adapting therapy in a given culture, for example the barriers posed by health system. Exergetic optimization and comparison of combined gas turbine supercritical CO2 power cycles
For developing a sustainable power system, the key is to maximize the use of available resources with a minimal impact on the environment. One technique for achieving this is exhaust heat recovery. In this paper, three gas turbine exhaust heat recovery supercritical carbon dioxide combined power cycles are presented. They are combined gas turbine-recompression cycle, combined gas turbine-preheating cycle, and combined gas turbine-simple regenerative cycle. For all the cycles, thermodynamic models are developed and the influence of varying mass flow rates, compression ratio, and mass split/recompression percentages in different components of all three cycles are investigated. Using genetic algorithm, exergetic optimization is done to find the optimal configuration for each cycle. The reduction in CO2 emissions in presented cycles against fossil fuel power cycles is also assessed. Additionally, a comparison with a simple gas turbine (SGT) and an air bottoming combined cycle (ABC) is presented. The results indicate that owing to exhaust exergy recovery, there is a significant improvement in the energetic and exergetic performance of combined gas turbine-supercritical CO2 power cycles compared to that of SGT and ABC. The sum of exergy destruction and exergy loss in the combined cycles is lower as compared to the sum in SGT. The reduction in losses compared to SGT is 22.89% in the case of the combined gas turbine recompression cycle and 35.8% in the case of the combined gas turbine preheating cycle (CGTPHC). Moreover, the energetic and exergetic performances of the bottoming supercritical CO2 recompression cycles (BRECs) are better than those of the bottoming supercritical CO2 preheating cycle owing to lower exergy destruction in the components of BREC. As a result of comparative analysis based on the exergetic performance and environmental impact, the CGTPHC is selected as an appropriate option for gas turbine exhaust exergy recovery
