    Deflection of coupled elasticity–electrostatic bimorph PVDF material: theoretical, FEM and experimental verification

    Piezoelectric materials have wide applications in the field of mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering because of its voltage dependent actuation. Piezoelectric material goes through voltage generation whenever deflection is induced in it and vice versa. Piezoelectric bimorph beam has been widely used for sensing and actuating. In the actuation mode, an electric field is applied across the beam thickness, one layer contracts while the other expands. This results in the bending of the entire structure and tip deflection. In the sensing mode, the bimorph is used to measure an external load by monitoring the piezoelectric induced electrode voltages. In this research work, a 2D bimorph piezoelectric actuator model having two layers made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) material was developed to examine the inverse piezoelectric effect. Finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out on specially designed actuator model by using MATLAB Partial Differential Equation (PDE) ToolboxTM. Theoretical analysis has been carried out to measure the tip deflection under applied electric field. The laboratory test was performed to investigate the deformation behavior of piezoelectric actuator. It is observed that, more the electric field applied, more the material would be deformed in a particular direction. The experimental results are in good agreement with numerical results

    Prevalence of anxiety and depression among Medical Students in MMCH, Sindh, Pakistan

    Introduction: Medical education is stressful. High levels of stress have been seen in medical students in various studies. The academic stressors include the volume of material to be learned, academic performance and evaluation, examination and continuous assessment, mental tension and too much work load. All this can result in decreased life satisfaction among students. &nbsp;Stress during medical school can lead to problems later in professional life compromising patient care. Objectives: To know the prevalence of anxiety and depression among medical students of Muhammad Medical College, Mirpurkhas, Sindh, Pakistan&nbsp; Methodology: A Cross-sectional study was done on the students of Muhammad Medical College, Mirpurkhas, Sindh, who had spent more than six months in the medical college. Self-administered questionnaire was given to the students, present in the class and willing to participate in the study. The instrument used to assess the anxiety and depression levels was the, Aga Khan University Anxiety and Depression Scale (AKUADS). Additional quotations regarding socioeconomic variables were also included in them survey instrument, such as student’s age order, family monthly income, and gender, marital status. Results: Using anxiety and depression scale it was found out that 318 (96.36%) students had anxiety and depression. Among them 215 (67.61%) were females and 103 (32.38%) males. Prevalence of anxiety and depression in students of Final, 4th year and 3rd year 2nd and 1st years was 13%, 15%, 20% and 21%, 28% respectively. It was significantly higher in 1st year and 2nd year students, as compared to final and 4th year and students. Conclusions: Most of medical students have anxiety and depression due to study burden and a busy schedule. It is also seen that anxiety and depression is more among female medical students, and more among in 1st year and 2nd year MBBS students, as compared to the final and forth year students. &nbsp; Keywords: Anxiety, depression, Medical students, prevalenc

    Fortifying Smart Home Security: A Robust and Efficient User-Authentication Scheme to Counter Node Capture Attacks

    In smart home environments, the interaction between a remote user and devices commonly occurs through a gateway, necessitating the need for robust user authentication. Despite numerous state-of-the-art user-authentication schemes proposed over the years, these schemes still suffer from security vulnerabilities exploited by the attackers. One severe physical attack is the node capture attack, which allows adversaries to compromise the security of the entire scheme. This research paper advances the state of the art by conducting a security analysis of user-authentication approaches regarding their vulnerability to node capture attacks resulting in revelations of several security weaknesses. To this end, we propose a secure user-authentication scheme to counter node capture attacks in smart home environments. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme, we employ the BAN logic and ProVerif tool for verification. Lastly, we conduct performance analysis to validate the lightweight nature of our user-authentication scheme, making it suitable for IoT-based smart home environments

    Remittances and Poverty Linkages in Pakistan: Evidence and Some Suggestions for Further Analysis

    Global remittances experienced a dramatic increase over the years, particularly since 1990 wherein the developing world emerged to be the major beneficiary accounting for 60 percent of the total amount. Because of the sheer volume, and magnitude of the remittances, and pre-eminence of these flows compared to the FDIs, development assistance and in some cases the trade related transactions, the development practitioners tended to focus and investigate the importance of remittances which are generally regarded as a dependable source for growth, improved welfare and poverty alleviation in the developing world. Given the fact that remittances flows entail wide ranging ramifications both for sending as well as receiving countries, difficult to be generalised, hence empirical evidence has been mounted though lack of consensus is visible.
