Does closure of chronic pilonidal sinus still remain a matter of debate after bilateral rotation flap? (N-shaped closure technique)
Background: Controversy still exists about the exact cause of pilonidal sinus either acquired or congenital, and also about what is the best surgical technique for the treatment of the disease. We successfully treated chronic pilonidal sinus with a new flap technique {N-shaped bilateral rotation flap} for closure of the defect. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two patients (30 men and two women) were treated by eccentric elliptical excision of the diseased tissues down to the postsacral fascia and closure of the defect with our flap [which is a random pattern flap], then a closed suction drain was placed at the base of the wound, with its tip being brought out in the gluteal region at least 5 cm lateral to the lower end of the suture line. Results: All our patients healed completely without recurrence during a period of average follow-up of two years. Mean hospital stay was 1.5 days (range 1-5 days). Mean time to complete healing was 11.9 days (range 6-18 days). Mean time off work was 13.7 days (range 10-21 days). Two patients had wound infection and one patient a partial breakdown. The recurrence rate was 0%. Conclusions: A tension-free suture via bilateral rotation flaps with a good suction at the button of the wound for drainage of blood from the bottom of the wound is the key to the success of repair without recurrence
A Systematic Literature Review on Risk Disclosure Research: State-of-the-art and Future Research Agenda
This study presents a systematic review of the existing literature on corporate risk disclosure (RD). The study reviews 104 studies published in 51 high-ranked journals over the period 1999–2019 following the systematic literature review methodology developed and employed by past works. The results highlight the substantial knowledge gaps and inconclusive findings of extant literature in several aspects, including identifying avenues for further research in terms of research designs, settings, scope and theories. The findings also indicate that limited studies focus on developing countries, private institutions, and non-profit organizations. Similarly, our findings show that existing research that examines other firm and cross-country drivers of risk, such as national accounting, auditing, economic, governance, language, and legal systems, are not well documented. By contrast, our review illustrates that there is an increase in the number of studies published in recent years with over one-half of those that we review in this research published in the last six years of our sample period. Furthermore, our results suggest that past review studies have also focused excessively on the immediate firm-level characteristics, such as firm size, growth, leverage, value, and cost of capital. The findings of our review will be of great interest to academics, accounting standard-setters, managers and practitioners, policymakers, regulators, researchers, and students.</p
A Novel Multivariate and Accurate Detection Scheme for Electricity Theft Attacks in Smart Grids
In advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), smart meters (SMs) are deployed to periodically forward accurate power consumption readings from the client side to the electric utility companies/operators. Such readings are crucial for load monitoring, grid management, and billing. However, malicious clients or manipulated SMs may initiate electricity theft cyberat-tacks by reporting false/manipulated readings to deteriorate the grid performance or decrease their bills illegally. To identify these attacks, this paper proposes a novel multivariate electricity theft detector that considers not only the power consumption readings, like most existing techniques in the literature, but also the grid voltage and power losses. The proposed detector allows the electric utilities to accurately detect the electricity theft incidence and monitor diverse clients' loads. The proposed model was evaluated using real-world data, where it could outperform the baseline detector, that relies only on power consumption readings of different clients, by achieving around 5-15% enhancement in the detection rate of different, considered attacks.ACKNOWLEDGMENT This work was made possible by PDRA grant # PDRA7-0410-21004 from the Qatar National Research Fund (a member of Qatar Foundation). Multicomponent image segmentation using a genetic algorithm and artificial neural network
Image segmentation is an essential process for image analysis. Several methods were developed to segment multicomponent images, and the success of these methods depends on several factors including 1) the characteristics of the acquired image and 2) the percentage of imperfections in the process of image acquisition. The majority of these methods require a priori knowledge, which is difficult to obtain. Furthermore, they assume the existence of models that can estimate its parameters and fit to the given data. However, such a parametric approach is not robust, and its performance is severely affected by the correctness of the utilized parametric model. In this letter, a new multicomponent image segmentation method is developed using a nonparametric unsupervised artificial neural network called Kohonen's self-organizing map (SOM) and hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA). SOM is used to detect the main features that are present in the image; then, HGA is used to cluster the image into homogeneous regions without any a priori knowledge.
