Effect of processing on the antioxidant activity and other quality parameters of Muscadine grape juice
Muscadine grapes are native to southeastern parts of the United States. They are widely processed into juices and wines. They contain high amounts of polyphenols that are generally known to have high levels of antioxidant activity, offering potential health benefits. Since the juice is always consumed after processing, the effect of processing on the antioxidant activity and other quality parameters needs to be determined. Unpasteurized Muscadine grape juice was obtained from Paulk vineyards in Georgia. Juice was thermally pasteurized at 85 °C for 53 s. To obtain microbiologically safe conditions for High Pressure Processing (HPP) of juice, microbial equivalence between thermal processing and HPP was established using Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain. For HPP, the juice was vacuum packed in pouches and processed at pressures ranging from 275 - 425 MPa for 5 - 15 min. Total phenolics in juice samples were measured using Folin - Ciocalteu method. The antioxidant activity was determined using chemical antioxidant assay - Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) and biological antioxidant assay - Cellular Antioxidant Activity (CAA) assay. ‘Difference from Control’ sensory test was performed to find the overall difference in the sensory quality of unpasteurized and processed juice samples. The effect storage time and temperature on total phenolics, ORAC value, color and ellagic acid content was determined for the processed juice samples. Results showed no significant change in total phenolics and ORAC value, after processing. Cellular antioxidant activity increased significantly in high pressure processed sample as compared to thermally processed sample. No overall difference was perceived during sensory evaluation between any of the samples. During storage, total phenolics and ORAC value decreased with time, but the choice of process had no impact on these parameters. Browning index (BI) calculated from measured color indicators, was different for thermally processed and high pressure processed samples, but both samples showed an increase in the BI with time. Ellagic acid content was found to be higher in high pressure processed storage samples compared to unpasteurized and thermally processed samples. Emotion and reason in ethical decision making: the effect of habituation on judgements in ethical dilemmas
Research has shown that people approach ethical dilemmas based on if it is impersonal (i.e., more rational) or more personal (i.e., more emotional) in nature (e.g., see Greene, 2014, for a review). Further, there has been an abundance of evidence found in support of a dual process theory, which delineates between these two systems. In the present work, we sought to replicate those findings and investigate a method of shifting System 1 processing to System 2 processing, specifically in moral personal dilemmas. Our results showed some inconsistent results, in that our samples did not replicate previous effects. Further, the hypothesized method of shifting from System 1 to System 2 processing did not work, as hypothesized. Understanding the way people approach and make ethical decisions can have direct implications to the professional world. Future research should investigate individual differences or non-sacrificial ethical dilemmas, to extend the current work
Duces caecorum : on two recent translations of Wyclif
Two recent publications have greatly increased the amount of Wyclif available in translation: the Trialogus, translated by Stephen Lahey, and a thematic anthology translated by Stephen Penn. This review article documents the failings that make these translations worse than useless. A post mortem leads the author to claim that the publication of these volumes, the first of which has already been warmly received, is a sign of a gathering crisis in medieval studies, and one that we should take steps to avert.Peer reviewe
Overlooked Realities: Reimagining “Home” and “House” Among Women Domestic Workers in India
Domestic workers (DWs) are integral to the daily lives of a significant portion of India\u27s urban population, with an estimated 3.9 million individuals employed in domestic roles in urban areas, mostly women. This article explores the perceptions of home, house, and safe spaces among migrant women DWs in Delhi. Through in-depth interviews, it delves into their lived experiences as both breadwinners and survivors of domestic violence, revealing that (a) house and home are differently conceptualized by these workers; (b) their homes are perceived as warzones, reinforcing patriarchy through incidents of domestic violence and gendered subordination; and (c) women DWs navigate the complexities of conflicting identities as breadwinners and survivors within unequal gendered relationships
Development of life cycle assessment tool for pavement sustainability analysis
Motivated by the emerging importance of sustainability in transportation infrastructure, this study aims at developing a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool to quantify the energy and environmental impacts of pavements. The general LCA framework is incorporated into a highly customizable Excel-based software tool that can be used to facilitate environmental assessment of pavements at the project-level. The impact assessment focuses on the cumulative energy demand (CED) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission in the material, construction, and maintenance phases of pavement life-cycle. LCA results are highly dependent on the quality and appropriateness of data in the life cycle inventory. Therefore, different inventory database from major pertinent studies were reviewed and summarized. To implement the LCA framework, case studies regarding runway pavement rehabilitation/reconstruction at the John F. Kennedy (JFK) airport and new runway pavement designs conducted using the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pavement design methodology were conducted. Life-cycle inventory data were compiled from literature and field surveys from contractors. The data variations in the material-related energy and emission rates were considered for sensitivity analysis. Both direct energy consumption and GHG emission and their corresponding upstream components related to process fuels were considered in the impact assessment. The results indicate that the expected pavement service life and maintenance treatments significantly affect the comparison between hot-mix asphalt (HMA) and Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. The consideration of energy and emissions associated with the production of process fuels and electricity in the upstream process cannot be neglected in the LCA. The analysis findings suggest that there are no general conclusions on pavement type selection for sustainability and the project-level analysis need be conducted for selecting the most appropriate design alternatives.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Chinmay Thakka
Equitable Access to Intelligent Tutoring Systems Through Paper-Digital Integration
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) can only respond adaptively to the digital learning activities of the students. If students are learning offline without any digital devices, they have little or no means to receive personalized learning materials with the help of intelligent systems. This paper proposes a Paper-Digital Integration System that can provide offline learners equitable access to ITS capabilities by looking at their work on paper and giving personalized printable feedback. We analyzed data from a paper algebra assessment of N = 17 students and found mistakes that may generalize and help us offer adaptive paper-based recommendations to students. VGF (TLQP-62)-induced Neurogenesis Targets Early Phase Neural Progenitor Cells in the Adult Hippocampus and Requires Glutamate and BDNF Signaling
The neuropeptide VGF (non-acronymic), which has antidepressant-like effects, enhances adult hippocampal neurogenesis as well as synaptic activity and plasticity in the hippocampus, however the interaction between these processes and the mechanism underlying this regulation remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that VGF-derived peptide TLQP-62 specifically enhances the generation of early progenitor cells in nestin-GFP mice. Specifically, TLQP-62 significantly increases the number of Type 2a neural progenitor cells (NPCs) while reducing the number of more differentiated Type 3 cells. The effect of TLQP-62 on proliferation rather than differentiation was confirmed using NPCs in vitro; TLQP-62 but not scrambled peptide PEHN-62 increases proliferation in a cell line as well as in primary progenitors from adult hippocampus. Moreover, TLQP-62 but not scrambled peptide increases Cyclin D mRNA expression. The proliferation of NPCs induced by TLQP-62 requires synaptic activity, in particular through NMDA and metabotropic glutamate receptors. The activation of glutamate receptors by TLQP-62 activation induces phosphorylation of CaMKII through NMDA receptors and protein kinase D through metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5). Furthermore, pharmacological antagonists to CaMKII and PKD inhibit TLQP-62-induced proliferation of NPCs indicating that these signaling molecules downstream of glutamate receptors are essential for the actions of TLQP-62 on neurogenesis. We also show that TLQP-62 gradually activates Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)-receptor TrkB in vitro and that Trk signaling is required for TLQP-62- induced proliferation of NPCs. Understanding the precise molecular mechanism of how TLQP-62 influences neurogenesis may reveal mechanisms by which VGF-derived peptides act as antidepressantlike agents.© 2014.
