Thomas Clarkson Papers
Thomas Clarkson (b. 1760 d. 1846) was a renowned English abolitionist who spent his adult life fighting to end slavery. As a leader in the British anti-slavery society, Clarkson was instrumental in getting the English Parliament to ban the slave trade in 1807 and to abolish the institution of slaver in 1833. The majority of this small collection is comprised of correspondence from Thomas Clarkson and his wife, Catherine, to her father, William Buck. Notable writings by Clarkson include the original essay An Liceat Nolentes In Servitutom Dare? [Is It Lawful to Make Slaves of Others Against Their Will?]. This essay, written in Latin, won the Chancellor's Prize at Cambridge College, England in 1785 and served as the basis for the expanded work, Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species, Particularly The African published in 1786.

Bestiaries the animal and the human in Mila Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being and J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace
Includes abstract.In his book, The Open (2004), Giorgio Agamben suggests that the border between the human and the animal passes "first of all as a mobile border within living man". At stake in the construction of this border is a division of the human and the animal into separate and homogenous groups, and subsequently a denial of a multiplicity of life forms and experience. This relates to what Derrida (2004) has deemed "the self-interested misrecognition of what is called the Animal in general", and is something other critics working in the field of animal studies have discussed. In this thesis I read Milan Kundera's novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being and J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace in line with Agamben's notion of the fluidity of the human-animal border. The first chapter of this dissertation, 'Behaving like Animals', offers a reading of the biblical tale of Genesis and of the numerous sexual encounters in the novels that complicate the assumption of shame as being 'proper to man'. The second chapter, "Alternative lives, Alternative Deaths", challenges the idea of Driepoot's death in Disgrace as being "euthanasia" and, moreover, examines the complexities of mourning the death of what Jeff McMahan has deemed "beings on the margins of life", which includes both humans and animals. In my analysis of these novels, I have borrowed from different, seemingly disconnected, critical discourses. In some cases, this has meant "inserting" the animal into these theories in places where the animal was not explicitly named. This has meant putting pressure on existing lines of enquiry. My multi-disciplinary approach to theorising animals, and our relations to and with them, suggests different avenues for research in the growing field of animal studies

Stable, high-power, single frequency generation at 532nm from a diode-bar-pumped Nd:YAG ring laser with intracavity LBO frequency doubler
We obtained 2.5 W of single-frequency TEMoo output at 532 nm using a Brewster-angled LBO crystal for intracavity second-harmonic generation in a diode-bar-pumped Nd:YAG laser. By inserting a thin uncoated étalon, the 1061.4 nm laser transition can be selected, generating 1.6 W of output at 530.7 nm

Thomas Clarkson, revered by American abolitionists and one of the greatest of the leaders in the antislavery movement, has been too long neglected by recorders of history. This thesis attempts to reawaken an awareness that once existed of Clarkson's important contributions to one of the noble humanitarian movements of the last century
Energy transfer in lanthanide complexes
This thesis details investigations into the photophysical properties of lanthanide ions in a number of different systems. The preparation and characterisation of lanthanide containing surfactant salts of the type Ln(A0T)(_3) (Ln = Tb, Nd, Eu, AOT = bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate) is described. Small angle neutron scattering experiments have been used to determine the size and shape of reverse micelles formed by these surfactants in water/cyclohexane microemulsions. The luminescence lifetimes of the lanthanide ions have been used to investigate the solvation environment within reverse micelle systems as a function of water content. The use of lanthanide complexes based on 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane bearing phenanthridine antenna in luminescence microscopy has been explored. Samples such as silica particles, onion skin cells and guinea pig heart cells have been imaged. Time- resolved measurements have allowed time gating of the sample from a fluorescent background and lifetime maps of the images have been obtained. The preparation and characterisation of deuteriated complexes of dota (1,4,7,10- tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid) with lanthanide ions is described. Selective deuteriation of both the ring and arm sites allow the relative quenching effects of C-H/D oscillators to be determined for various lanthanides in a series of structurally well defined complexes. Finally, investigations into the distance dependence of the energy transfer between aromatic chromophores and lanthanide ions have been undertaken. The synthesis of a model system linking a phenanthridine donor to a europium complex by poly(valine) spacer units is described. Preliminary photophysical results show that the quantum yield of emission by europium decreases as the distance between the donor acceptor pair is increased
High power, diode pumped, single frequency lasers
This thesis presents experimental and theoretical work on the development of high power (i.e. multi-Watt) single frequency lasers, with the main emphasis on using intra-cavity second harmonic generation to produce high power visible output. With such a laser, pumped by a beam shaped 20W diode bar, we have obtained over 3W of TEM00 single frequency output at 532nm. Because of the strong non-linear effects introduced into the resonator cavity by the frequency doubler, the behaviour of the laser can be significantly altered. In particular, there is the previously unreported phenomenon of mode-hopping suppression, where the non lasing modes are suppressed by the nonlinear loss (due to sum-frequency generation with the lasing mode). This allows the lasing mode to be smoothly tuned over many mode spacings simply by scanning the cavity length. Tuning ranges of up to 80GHz have been measured, and are in good agreement with theoretical calculations. There are also some less desirable consequences of the high nonlinear loss, such as parasitic lasing, self misalignment, and bidirectional lasing, that have had to be overcome in order to achieve efficient operation.Ring lasers can provide, arguably, the most robust and stable single frequency operation. However care must be taken in their design to minimise spatial hole burning. Even a small amount of residual spatial hole burning can cause multi-frequency operation in ring lasers. This thesis contains experimental measurements of spatial hole burning and compares these with a numerically calculated theory. Also, the technique of pump beam displacement to increase the single frequency performance of end-pumped ring lasers, suffering from residual spatial hole burning, is described.Thermal effects, such as thermal lensing and thermally induced birefringence often prove to be a major limiting factor in efficient operation of high power lasers. However these effects are dependent on several factors, such as the resonator design, and the heat sinking of the laser rod. Described in this thesis are the steps we have taken to minimize these effects in the designs of the high power lasers we have constructed
