After the Epidemic: Recent Trends in Youth Violence in the United States
The epidemic of youth violence in the United States peaked in 1993 and has been followed by a rapid, sustained drop. In parallel with our earlier treatment (Cook and Laub 1998), we assess two types of explanation for this drop -- those that focus on 'cohort' effects (including the effects of abortion legalization) and those that focus on 'period' effects (including the effects of the changing crack-cocaine trade). Once again we are able to reject the cohort-type explanations, yet also find contradictions with an account based on the dynamics of crack markets. The 'way out' of this epidemic has not been the same as the 'way in.' The relative importance in homicide of youths, racial minorities, and guns, all of which increased greatly during the epidemic, has remained high during the drop. Arrest patterns tell a somewhat different story, in part because of changing police practice with respect to aggravated assault. Finally, we demonstrate that the rise and fall of youth violence has been narrowly confined with respect to race, sex, and age, but not geography. Given the volatility in the rates of juvenile violence, forecasting rates is a risky business indeed. Effectively narrowing the range of plausible explanations for the recent ups and downs may require a long time horizon, consideration of a broader array of problem behaviors, and comparisons with trends in other countries.

Ablator Modeling: Why Not Much Has Changed Over the Past 45+ Years
In the late 1950s, the earliest models describing the thermal response of ablative materials were based on the heat of ablation concept, which is an empirical approach that was reasonable for the types of materials of interest at that time. In the early-mid 60s the models were expanded to include pyrolysis since organic resin composites became the TPS materials of interest. However, surface recession was still predominantly modeled via empirical correlation. The development of the 1-D CMA finite difference code in the mid-late 60s introduced the thermochemical ablation approach for gas/surface interactions. Since that time investigators have developed finite volume and finite element codes, in 1-D, 2-D and 3-D, but the basic modeling has not evolved significantly. Models describing internal gas pressure due to pyrolysis, particle impact erosion, in-depth radiant transport, etc., have been added to address specific problems, but the fundamental modeling has not evolved. The reasons for this stagnation, as viewed by the author, will be described

Shoah’s Trauma in the Memoirs of Martha Goren (Winter) The Daughter We Have Always Dreamed of. Martha’s Story
In this paper, the author emphasises that the events of the twentieth century, in particular the Holocaust, are (post) traumatic not only for a particular nation but for humanity in general. Any denials only confirm the deep collective and cultural footprint of the horrific experience the mankind has gone through. An attempt is made here to analyse the memories of Martha Goren (Winter) by using the psychological concepts of M. Hirsch, C. Caruth, J. Lacan, D. Laub, R.J. Lifton, D. Taylor, Sh. Felman, S. Freud. The author, who was born in Chortkiv in 1935 in the family of a Jewish lawyer and pharmacist, tells the readers of her experience in the face of horrors of the Holocaust. According to the article’s author, the writing is one of the most effective ways to find release because the victim’s becoming the author enables her to distance herself from the experiences as she contemplates a time of horrific events. By using the technique of exact writing, Martha Groen avoids descriptions of her own feelings and emotions. Thus, one of the important post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms is a defence mechanism that shuts down an emotion (the so-called numbness effect). A number of problems that the Jewish girl has encountered in her life are identified in the text: self-identity problems, the survivor syndrome, and the post-traumatic stress disorder. All of these collective and cultural traumas overlapped and amplified each other
Contact-dependent killing by Caulobacter crescentus, via cell surface-associated glycine-zipper proteins
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Biology, 2017.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references. In the battle for resources within microbial communities, antagonistic interactions between bacterial species are often mediated by diffusible inhibitory compounds, which can be diffusible or delivered in a contact-dependent manner. Bacteriocins are one ubiquitous type of such antimicrobials, and collectively constitute a very diverse group of ribosomally-synthesized diffusible proteinaceous toxins. The majority of well-characterized bacteriocin systems belong to a limited group of bacterial clades and environments. In contrast, interbacterial interactions are poorly characterized in the nutrient-poor aquatic environments where the a-proteobacterium Caulobacter crescentus thrives. Here, I describe the discovery and characterization of a new type of bacteriocin in C. crescentus. The Cdz toxin is composed of two small hydrophobic proteins, each harboring an extended glycine-zipper motif often found in amyloids. These proteins are retained on the surface of producer cells where they form large, insoluble aggregates. I show that Cdz mediates cell contact-dependent killing of closely related species. The Cdz bacteriocin uses a type I secretion system and is unrelated to previously described contact-dependent inhibition systems. Delivering the bacteriocin directly to the recipient, rather than secreting it into the extracellular milieu, likely enables C. crescentus to avoid the dilemma of producing an expensive common good that would rapidly diffuse away in its aqueous environment. Furthermore, Cdz-like systems are found in many clades of bacteria, including pathogens such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, suggesting that this form of contact-dependent inhibition is widespread. Using a cationic membrane stain, I showed that the Cdz bacteriocin causes inner membrane depolarization in the target cells. To further characterize the mechanism of delivery and toxicity, I conducted a suppressor screen to identify mutations that confer Cdz resistance to a target strain. I identified the putative surface receptor for the Cdz toxins, PerA, a protein harboring several pentapeptide-repeat motifs thought to adopt a quadrilateral [beta]-helical fold. PerA plays an important role in envelope homeostasis. Additionally, I identified two envelope-remodeling genes whose upregulation confers resistance to Cdz-mediated killing. Taken together, my work has expanded the repertoire of bacteriocins, demonstrating that these antimicrobials can be contact-dependent and, consequently, advantageous in a wider range of environments than previously anticipated.by Leonor García-Bayona.Ph. Societal Response to Developmental Differences and Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes
Recent findings indicate an increased concern that conventional substance abuse treatment models consistently reflect less than satisfactory outcomes when applied to adolescents. This study investigates developmental differences among adolescents and adults as a possible cause of the disparity. The author conducted interviews with substance abuse professionals, developmental psychologists, adolescents in treatment, and adolescents no less than six months out of treatment. Questions focus on assessment agendas, developmental and motivational differences among adolescents and adults, movement along the addiction continuum, developmental tasks of adolescence, and adolescent receptivity. The results of the interviews among each group are compared and consistencies are noted. The implications of any correlation within the noted consistencies are discussed, as well as the implications for social work practice
