Learning to Be a Nurse – the Contribution of the Hidden Curriculum in the Clinical Setting

    No full text
Student learning is traditionally based around the philosophy and objectives of a stated curriculum.  A curriculum, however, is many faceted.  While the philosophy and objectives are written, and therefore freely accessible, this overt or legitimate curriculum is not the whole curriculum.  Robinson and Hill (1995) identify three components; the taught curriculum, the hidden curriculum and the wider social context of nursing education.  The taught curriculum deals with theoretical concepts.  The hidden curriculum involves the experience, and application of theory and the wider social context relates to the practice environment.  Although these three components make a nursing curriculum they are not necessarily integrated.  Martins (1988) and Kelly (1991) found mismatches between the professional values learned in the classroom and how students were expected to put these values into practice in a clinical setting

Evaluation of Adult Outpatient Magnetic Resonance Imaging Sedation Practices: Are Patients Being Sedated Optimally?

    No full text
AbstractPurposeTo evaluate the use of anxiolytics in adult outpatient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) centres and to determine whether utilisation is optimal based on the pharmacology of the drugs used, who prescribes these drugs, and how patients are managed after administration.Materials and MethodsIdentical paper and Web-based surveys were used to anonymously collect data about radiologists' use of anxiolytic agents for adult outpatient MRI examinations. The survey questions were about the type of facility, percentage of studies that require sedation, the drug used and route of administration, who orders the drug, timing of administration, patient monitoring during and observation after the study, use of a dedicated nurse for monitoring, and use of standard sedation and discharge protocols. The χ2 analysis for statistical association among variables was used.ResultsEighty-five of 263 surveys were returned (32% response rate). The radiologist ordered the medication (53%) in slightly more facilities than the referring physician (44%) or the nurse. Forty percent of patients received medication 15–30 minutes before MRI, which is too early for peak effect of oral or sublingual drugs. Lorazepam was most commonly used (64% first choice). Facilities with standard sedation protocols (56%) were more likely to use midazolam than those without standard sedation protocols (17% vs 10%), to have a nurse for monitoring (P = .032), to have standard discharge criteria (P = .001), and to provide written information regarding adverse effects (P = .002).ConclusionsMany outpatients in MRI centres may be scanned before the peak effect of anxiolytics prescribed. A standard sedation protocol in such centres is associated with a more appropriate drug choice, as well as optimized monitoring and postprocedure care

Research Identities: Reflections of a Contract Researcher

    No full text
This paper examines the institutional identity formation of contract research staff in the context of the Taylorisation of research knowledges. The author has been a contract researcher for many years, after initially training and practising as a Probation Officer. She makes links between her social work training, and her current practice as a qualitative researcher. Drawing on her experience of working on a variety of different projects, at a number of different institutions, and providing illustrative examples from projects in sociology, social policy, health, and education, she reflects on the implications of the current social organization of academic research both for professional research practice and for researcher identity. There is a paradox in the way that contract research staff accrue a wealth of experience of how research is organised and conducted in different contexts, a repertoire of skills, and a vast volume of various kinds of \'data\', whilst remaining vulnerable and marginalized figures within the academy, with few opportunities for professional development and advancement. She outlines a number of strategies she has employed in the preservation of the \'research self\', and concludes by suggesting that the academy has much to learn about the effective management of \'waste\', as embodied by researchers\' selves and their data, consequent upon the Taylorisation of research work.Taylorisation; Academic Work; Identities; Qualitative Research; In-Depth Interviews; Reflective Practice

From madrasah to museum : a biography of the Islamic manuscripts of Cape Town

    No full text
This paper focuses on the Islamic manuscripts of Cape Town, locally referred to as kietaabs, written by Muslims predominantly in the 19th century, in jawi (Arabic-Malay) and Arabic-Afrikaans. Inspired by the idea of a 'biography' of the archive and 'the social life of things', the study traces the life of the kietaabs, from their creation and original use, to their role in contemporary South African society, as objects of heritage and identity. It approaches the kietaabs as objects, emphasizing their movements, status and use, rather than their content

How Can International Staff Exchange be Implemented as Part of the Execution of an Internationalisation Strategy in UK Higher Education? The Case of a Strategic Entrepreneur

    No full text
This work constructs a bridge across the "knowing-doing gap" of international staff exchange: the gap between strategy formulation and its execution within the constraints of a post-1992 university business school in the UK. It goes beyond the common, well-intentioned and yet vague statements involving the "encouragement" of international staff exchange to propose a model of execution through strategic entrepreneurship. The promotion of international staff mobility is a founding principle of the "Bologna Process", designed to create a converged system of higher education across Europe. Many UK "new" (ie post-1992) universities are engaged in the development of internationalisation strategies which include staff exchange. Meanwhile, the failure to execute strategy is increasingly acknowledged as a major problem in organisational performance. Using a first-, second and third-person Insider Action Research (AR) approach, the author initiated, planned, organised and implemented an international staff exchange between universities in the UK and France. Data generated were subjected to a double process of analysis in order to construct the new model. A policy of "subjectivity with transparency" and transcontextual credibility throughout enables the reader to judge transferability. Duality is the nature of this "bridge" and the simplistic transplant of the expatriation policies of commercial organisations is avoided. Concepts from the theoretical literature in three domains - strategic management and entrepreneurship in higher education, internationalisation of higher education and strategy execution through strategic entrepreneurship - are combined with the research analysis to propose that "strategic entrepreneurs" can execute the riskier elements of an internationalisation strategy, such as staff exchange. Members of the creative class, strategic entrepreneurs are attracted and motivated by the foundation of a diverse environment and entrepreneurial culture promoted by a university's values-driven, holistic approach to internationalisation. Their autonomous strategic behaviour must be facilitated by an execution-focussed organisational architecture. In a university, the overall approach to staff exchange should combine central and local (school-based) functions and resource both to develop strategic initiatives and to exploit tactical opportunities. This work broadens AR from education into strategic management, specifically linking the areas of strategic execution and strategic entrepreneurship

The annual publication of the students of W. R. Myers High School Taber, Alberta. (Volume 2013-2014)pdfW. R. Myers High School WO tho Welcome to Wherever You Are Graduation Ceremony ^^ ^^ Graduation Banauet 'Prinejbafs f^e&fress Johanna Kutanzi Ladies and Gentlemen, Good Morning! Welcome to the W.R. Myers High School Cap and Gown Ceremonies of 2014! I can’t believe how fast the year went, that I am once again standing in front of our graduating class - you are looking fine! I am happy that you are having this moment. I can’t believe the weather! Generally, on graduation day, our only complaint is that it is too hot - especially for the boys in their handsome suits later in the afternoon. Boys - we have good news ... Last Saturday, I was cleaning out the closet in my daughter’s room - and that, by the way, should be a job for someone who has done something desperately wrong and is being punished for some act! Anyway, we decided to take a break - go for a walk. It was snowing! The toques came out, the mitts should have come out - so, if we look on the up side of things, it is not snowing today! For the last two weeks or so, if I ran into someone and they know that I am connected to Myers, there was generally a comment along the line of, “Grad is coming up soon.” And so it was on Tuesday, as I took the kids for an evening haircut, that I ran into a dear friend. I was commenting that I had not yet written my speech for grad and that really all I want for the kids is for them to be happy and well. How do you turn that into a speech? And that truly is, speaking on behalf of the staff of W.R. Myers High School, our wish for you - be happy and be well. Now, if being happy and being well simply happened on their own, then I could just take my seat and wish everyone an outstanding day. That is not the case. It seems like everything takes at least a bit of work, and even something as seemingly simple as being happy and well, requires thought, time and attention. You have many journeys ahead of you - hopefully most will be joyful and exciting and some may, will be, difficult. Though it all, know yourself, treat yourself well and never sell yourself short - that would be such a shame. You know, and I know, that were Brett here today, and maybe he is, he would want only the very best for you - he would look at you with that convincing smile, that twinkle in his eye, maybe tilt his head a bit - and want you to be happy and well. Brett sat right in front of me in LA enrichment, probably because of his hearing he sat in the front in a lot of his classes, and I remember that look very well - usually there was a touch of mischief in there as well. I hope that you, our graduates, feel well-prepared to plan and navigate the next step of your journey. I hope that you will carry forward moments of pride, struggles that have turned into accomplishments, memories of giggles and giddiness, friendships and true and genuine value of who you are and all you contribute. I hope you remember, always, how important you are - to your family, to your friends and to yourself - there is tremendous value in you. And because of that you are wished a lifetime of being happy and well - of discovering and nurturing your talents, of committing to work or study that is meaningful to you, enjoying the moments as they present themselves, of loving and being loved. To all the parents today - how are you doing? Another milestone! I was at my daughter’s kindergarten Mother’s Day Tea on Wednesday - same daughter with the messy room! The tea was beautiful! Mrs. Anderson was kind enough to put together a video of moments throughout the kindergarten year - and the really good thing was that I found out I was not the only sap out there - the rest of the Moms were crying too, as we watched this video capture the moments of fun and growing up for our children. And I thought about you - the parents of our grade 12s - and the love you have for your children, the insane pride we have as parents and the bumps, hugs and hoorays along the way. I hope that you too enjoy this moment. Thank you so much for all you have done for your children along the way - kids need their parents and they could not have done it without you. And, Happy Mother’s Day! I want to end with one more story. Last Friday afternoon, I took some time to make sure I actually had something nice to wear for today. After shopping, I ran into a former parent and get an update on two of his children and a nephew as well (Jance, Alex and Tom are all doing well!) - we chat for a minute and continue on. Then I go to confirm my hair appointment for this morning - the kids that spend 200 days with me know that hair is not a big priority. Anyway, I run into Jenny Meyer and say to her, “Hey, your Mom was able to find something pretty for me to wear and now I am getting my hair - I’m set.” Without missing a beat, Jenny said, “This town will take care of you.” This town will take care of you - that is what we call home! Remember that you have a home, that you are valued in this community and your hometown, as represented by everyone who made it a priority to be here today, stands behind you, wanting you to be happy and well. Whether your next step takes you down the street, across the globe or somewhere in between (like PEI), please know that this is your home, you will always be Myers alumni and that we will always wish you well. As is customary, my final task is to introduce the class valedictorian. This year’s valedictorian has been a quiet and unassuming student, someone who goes about the work with a great deal of diligence and helpful curiousity. Over the four curiosityyers, there has been a consistent display of the most pleasant manners and the presence of a warm smile. And if you talk about farming, he really lights up! Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our valedictorian for the Class of 2014 - Ben Noble.^O J ^ l/a/ee&iforfan Ben Noble Good morning, well I’m glad that everyone was able to find the l-Rena. That’s exactly how we want to start Grad off with, 1000 tickets with arena spelt wrong. Right now all my teachers are going “Oh Ben, people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!” And they are right; I have no room to talk about spelling mistakes. In fact when my elementary school teachers find out that I am the valedictorian they will probably say “Well he must have finally learned how to spell!” The fact is I’m still working on that one! We learned a great deal since that start of our education 13 years ago, it is hard to fathom that we started out in kindergarten sitting on the floor learning that glue was not edible, I’m pretty sure Cole Nakamura learned that the hard way, and we began to slowly progress through the school hierarchy. We went from top dogs, to the bottom of the pile when we transferred to middle school. It was at middle school that many of us had our first slow dance and learned that the opposite gender was not really all that bad. We also learned that you can actually make too many posters. We looked on at the High school kids desiring to be more like them, thinking that they knew exactly what was going on. Then we became the high school kids and we learned that we were wrong, we didn’t actually have everything figured out automatically. In high school we learned the significance of a driver’s licence and the friends that it brought. We learned so very much at school, whether it was academic or life lessons, we always learned something new. And it was due to our teachers that we learned anything at all. I think that I speak for everyone when I say thank you to our teachers. I would personally like to thank the staff at W.R. Myers for your incredible dedication, and your commitment to your student’s education. Additionally I would like to thank you for your guidance, your friendship and the role you have played in our lives. Most importantly, I would like to thank our parents for their support, their tol§rance and their understanding; it cannot be easy to raise a teenager. Without parents and teachers, none of us would be who we are today, and none of us would be where we are today. I am honored to be chosen as your valedictorian, but it is also a great responsibility because I feel that I have the obligation to say something meaningful on the day that marks our transition from children to adults. Things are going to drastically change when June arrives, we are all aware of the challenges that we will face as we head out on our separate ways. Life will not always be simple or perfect; our class knows this better than most. It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge one of us is not present today, and that person is Brett Forchuk, I do however believe that you would all agree that he is certainly with us today in spirit. Today is significant because it indicates that we are about to set out on diverging paths. Edmund Hillary once said that “It is not the mountain we conquer, but rather ourselves.” What he means by this quote is that when one sets out to accomplish a goal, it is not the physical obstacles we face that impede our success, but rather the limitations we place upon ourselves. Like climbing a mountain, life is going to require skills, tools and companions to achieve success. Before you are able to climb a mountain you must first educate yourself on the topography, and the climate of the mountain, you will need to train long before you are able to attempt to climb. You will need people to travel with, people who you are able to trust and depend on, this being said you will have to be trusted and depended on as well to reach the summit. Einstein said “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” I believe if you combined the two ideologies together, you would be able to conclude that it does not matter if you achieve your goal of reaching the summit if to do so you have to impair someone else’s journey. Your character is what will remain long after you have reached the apex. Sometimes you will need to be humble enough to allow your companion to lead rather than yourself because they know the path better than you do. And sometimes you will need to admit to yourself that you are not ready to continue the climb until you have rested. An individual is only as strong as their skills and their mindset allow them to be. So improve your skills and get in the right mindset because the only limitations you have are the ones that you allow to affect you. With that in mind climb a mountain, chase after your dreams because it is better to fail at something, than to succeed at doing nothing at all. Even if you don’t make it to the peak it doesn’t matter, because life is not about the destination it is about the journey. Go out into the world, conquer your own doubt, conquer adversity, turn your limitations into strengths, and climb your mountain. Congratulations, graduation class of 2014! I wish you all the best, God bless you, Thank you. Impact of cultural factors on people management strategies of Pakistani-owned SMEs in the UK

    No full text
This research is based on an explorative study of cultural factors and their impact on people management strategies of Pakistani-owned SMEs in the UK. The topic of the research has been investigated through in-depth literature review, case studies and questionnaire-based field survey. The literature review provided theoretical insights to the study and empirical investigation generated a wide range of information about practical scenario of these companies. The triangulation approach of the study helped in offsetting weaknesses of a specific method by strengths of other methods. Keeping in view nature and requirements of the research topic, the researcher preferred inductive approach (theory building) instead of deductive approach (theory testing). The deductive approach is usually linked with natural sciences; whereas, inductive approach works well with social sciences. The current area of the research was purely subjective (closely linked with social sciences) requiring qualitative data through case studies and field surveys, therefore the researcher preferred interpretative philosophy and inductive approach which proved very effective in data gathering and analyzing process. The empirical investigation discovered a range of cultural factors such as religion, values, beliefs, traditions, cross-culture imperatives, languages and communication patterns playing a pivotal role in evolving and shaping HR related strategic frameworks of Pakistani-owned SMEs in the UK. The study emphasised the role of entrepreneurs as cross-cultural mediators seeking to develop their multiple identities to deal better with their multi-ethnic employees and customers. The triangulation of integrating the findings emerged out of case studies, field survey and literature review reflect a close resemblance between results of case studies and questionnaire survey; however, some dissimilarities have been found between empirical results and the results derived out of the literature review. The study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by furthering our substantive understanding about HRM, culture and cultural influences on HR strategies and practices of SMEs. It provides some practical lessons to SMEs in the UK in general and ethnic minority SMEs in particular. Also the study paves the way for students and researchers to conduct further research in the area to overcome any limitations found in the findings

Myers High School for 201 3 There is a certain buzz in the air and it is call grad. The streets in town a just a little busier, the restaurants are fuller (who has time to cook?) and you can't book a pedicure anywhere! As a community, we pause our busy lives and prepare to celebrate our young men and women, who are almost ready to embark on a new adventure - adulthood! Completing high school is one of those things that has likely always seemed so far away. Remember when you were little and you couldn't wait for Christmas? It just seemed to take forever until that very special day to make its very special appearance. And then it was there - all the talk about Christmas coming was over, all the waiting and anticipating was done, the celebration was enjoyed by all and a collection of fond memories was tucked away. It seems like graduation is the Christmas of the school world - and it is here! I want to take a few steps forward for a minute and imagine, for you - our grads - the world, brightly and boldly. We realize that there is a certain pressure at this point, to do something. Sometimes pressure is ok - it forces action. At the end of June, you are truly done your final year. The work of the last 12 years, 13 if you attended kindergarten, has been to prepare you for this time. Speaking on behalf of the staff of W.R. Myers, we believe that you are well prepared to pursue your passions and curiousities. With solid preparation, comes choice. Choice is that wonderful opportunity to dream, to plan, to decide, to make mistakes and maybe do it all again. Choice is freedom. Choice is powerful and inspiring. Choice makes you feel alive! Completing your diploma presents you with a sparkling buffet of choices. Have the courage to decide what it is that you want. Have the will to bring your plan to life. Practice gratitude and simply delight in the realization that you are actually doing something that started only as an idea, as a dream, as a vague image of what could be - a faint notion of what it is that you would like to do, if you could choice from a buffet of choices. You are talented people, with kind hearts, a hungry intellect and a desire to leave your mark on this world. I wish that you may always be bold and wise in your pursuits. Principal's HIHHH Address Yesterday, I had the great fortune to attend my son's kindergarten Mother's Day Tea. Wow - what an experience -very cool, very humbling and lovely. My son is 6 next week and almost done his first year of school. I imagine that the parents in the audience today akin to the emotions that the moms felt at the tea yesterday - pride, love, and wonder - where did the time do? The Mom sitting beside me (and you may be in the audience, if you are, hope you don't mind me mentioning your tattoo!) Anyway the tattoo was two lines and it said, " It is not always easy. It is always worth it." How true is that? I promise you, it will not always be easy. You already know that. As a class, as a school, we have been through times were not easy - not easy at all. There is sunshine after the darkest storm. There is hope. And it (we, our presence, our being) is always worth it. Also, at yesterday's Mother's Day Tea, we were presented with a video of our kids' year so far in Kindergarten. I thought I was the biggest sap, but it turns out every mother/parent is a big sap, when it comes to their kids! At the end of the video, this message lingers on the screen - They will find their wings! Let me ask you - my school kids; Do you have your wings? We think you do. This group of 1 000 people, and many not present here in this space and in this moment, know that you have your wings and are ready to stretch, to flex, to arch your wings. May your initial flight just be a short one and within familiar territory, or one into parts unknown, well beyond what you have tried before. Please
