事例研究論文The purpose of this study is to examine the educational effects of adventure education using sea kayaking in a lifelong sports course and to clarify the significance of adventure education on university students. Data collecting was conducted through five different approaches: (1) observation of sea kayaking activities, (2) learning portfolios of the whole course, (3) questionnaire survey on Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons, (4) assessment of teamwork using a rubric, and (5) two rounds of follow-up study. Data collection (2) to (5) were designed to provide students with opportunities for reflection. As a result, first, we were able to observe the progress of collaboration in the midst of risky natural activities, such as the movements naturally synchronized to overcome high waves and fast tidal currents. The learning portfolios demonstrated each student acted with an awareness of the items of Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons selected by him/herself for each activity and made an effort to overcome his/her weaknesses. The questionnaire survey on Fundamental Competencies for Working Persons showed that there was a significant improvement of 0.5 or more in 15 of the 32 items (on a 4-point scale) between pre- and post-surveys. In the teamwork assessment, the students' self-assessment tended to be higher than the faculty's as a whole, but the discrepancy was reduced in the post-assessment and the post-assessment scores increased significantly in all dimensions of teamwork in self- and faculty-assessments. In the follow-up study, it was found that the communication skills developed in this course were actually applied to other courses and job-hunting activities. The results of these surveys indicate that adventure education using sea kayaking has a positive effect on various aspects of students' abilities while forming a basis for their subsequent development

The objective of this paper is to identify the trends and issues of adventure education research to understand its educational significance at universities. First, we confirmed that adventure education is included in outdoor education. Then, we organized the indicators that distinguish general field education from adventure education into five categories based on the literature review of previous studies. We also provided an overview of the history of outdoor education and adventure education, traced their origins, and explored their underlying educational philosophies. Results indicate that the implementation of adventure education at universities has several educational effects such as an improved sense of belonging, self-efficacy, leadership, and group work skills. However, upon closer examination of the educational effects of adventure education, issues such as the failure to measure ongoing effects became evident. These issues are due to the fact that assessments are conducted only before and after implementation. The paper then organized adventure education models that are aimed at improving the quality of activities and that facilitate learning. Finally, we proposed a theory that explain the effectiveness of educational effects and confirmed that all models have certain strengths and limitations, and that they need to be used in combination

Many Japanese universities provide various initiatives and assistance in order to facilitate the transition from high school to university with the purpose of promoting adaptation to universities for students. One such initiative is new student orientation, which often takes the form of preparing schedules, providing guidance on course registration, and the introduction to facilities and undergraduate faculties/departments. However, the details of such initiatives differ among universities to match the characteristics of the undergraduate students. This study examines an orientation initiative that incorporates adventure education for new students in the department of engineering at a medium-sized, regional private university. It is similar to the Outdoor Initiative Programs conducted in both the United States and Canada. Programs such as these aim to develop relationships between the faculty members and students as well as among students themselves with the aim to give them a comfortable fresh start as university students. We assessed the long-term educational effects of Project Adventure; an adventure education program incorporated into the new studentʼs orientation. We designed an educational program as well as numerous helpful worksheets, and analyzed the short-term educational effects presented immediately after the program is finished via participant observation, worksheet descriptions, and pre- and post-questionnaire surveys. We then conducted a follow-up survey (in the form of questionnaire surveys and interviews) to confirm the long-term educational effects through the end of the third year. Further, by comparing and combining the results of these multiple surveys, we examined the combination of the experience process of our program, along with the experience of student learning and student life. The results revealed the following points. First, the program gave students the opportunity to take the first step to learning the meaning and pleasure of the cooperation with their peers through direct experience. Second, the relationships formed among the groups during their participation were maintained during the studentsʼ university careers. Along with the proximity of the instructors, this led to the formation of a strong learning community through a continuing sense of camaraderie. Further, the students were able to apply their experience in this program by facing new challenges; the cycle of facing and succeeding these challenges led to experience accumulation, paving the way for a virtuous cycle of learning. This study shows that the educational effects of the adventure education program when students enter university are long-term, extending to the very end of the third year

Behavioral interventions for reducing aggressive behavior of individuals with a brain injury

    No full text
Individuals who suffer a brain injury often exhibit challenging behaviors that they previously did not display. Challenging behaviors may include various types of aggressive behaviors such as physical aggression toward individuals and/or objects as well as verbal aggression. Behavioral approach is one of psychological intervention procedures that are often employed to eliminate or reduce the frequency of aggressive behaviors. This article over viewed the occurrence of aggressive behaviors of individuals with a brain injury and outlined three types of behavioral interventions, the contingency management procedure, positive behavior intervention support, and a combination of both. All are based on the theory of operant conditioning that posits that behaviors are learned through consequences. Although behavioral interventions are widely employed to ameliorate undesirable behaviors, their effectiveness varies among individuals. Tips for choosing an appropriate procedure are discussed.Review Articleothe

Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Matsuo Basho’s Oku no Hosomichi

This paper investigates Australian author Richard Flanagan’s novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and attempts to clarify the reason why Flanagan chose this title, which is linked to the travel writings of the Japanese author Matsuo Basho, for his novel. The novel focuses on the central character’s prisoner of war experience on the Thai-Burma Death Railway during World War II, and depicts the POW camp as well as cruel Japanese behaviour and atrocities in a realistic way. The work seems to provide a postcolonial framework in the sense that there is a colonial and postcolonial relationship between the colonizer, and the colonized. However, in this novel, the colonizer is Eastern, and the colonized is Western, and this fact reverses postcolonial theory which postulates a structure in which the colonizer is usually considered as Western and the colonized, Eastern. Postcolonial theory, thus, cannot be applied in this novel, which attempts to fuse the two opposites, the Western view and the Eastern view, through the work of the Japanese poet. As a result, Flanagan, in writing The Narrow Road to the Deep North, goes beyond being a postcolonial writer to become a writer in a globalizing age
