Repositioning the graphic designer as researcher
In academic terms, the discipline of graphic design is relatively young. Consequently the position of the discipline within academic territory, and the role of the designer, continue to be debated. In part, these debates have been a product of attempts to define and defend the discipline’s borders from within, in order to establish a sense of the role of graphic design and the graphic designer as commensurate with other disciplines both within and beyond art and design. In recent years graphic designers have variously been defined as ‘authors’, ‘producers’ and ‘readers’, yet none of these definitions seem to have provided any kind of productive or lasting impact within the academy. This paper suggests that rather than continue to seek territorial definitions and positions from within, it could be more productive to look beyond the confines of the discipline. Gaining a broader, interdisciplinary perspective on, and understanding of, qualitative research methods from other disciplines may enable the graphic designer to more fully position his or her practice within the wider academy. Such a perspective could help facilitate the repositioning and redefinition of the graphic designer as ‘researcher’ - a move that would be productive in relation to the future development of postgraduate research within the discipline
A Simple Construction for the Barnes-Wall Lattices
A certain family of orthogonal groups (called "Clifford groups " by G. E. Wall) has arisen in a variety of different contexts in recent years. These groups have a simple definition as the automorphism groups of certain generalized Barnes-Wall lattices. This leads to an especially simple construction for the usual Barnes-Wall lattices. {This is based on the third author's talk at the Forney-Fest, M.I.T., March 2000, which in turn is based on our paper "The Invariants of the Clifford Groups " Designs, Codes, Crypt., 24 (2001), 99-121, to which the reader is referred for further details and proofs.
Classifying rational G-spectra for profinite G
For G an arbitrary profinite group, we construct an algebraic model for rational G-spectra in terms of G-equivariant sheaves over the space of subgroups of G. This generalises the known case of finite groups to a much wider class of topological groups, and improves upon earlier work of the first author on the case where G is the p-adic integers.
As the purpose of an algebraic model is to allow one to use homological algebra to study questions of homotopy theory, we prove that the homological dimension (injective dimension) of the algebraic model is determined by the Cantor--Bendixson rank of the space of closed subgroups of the profinite group G. This also provides a calculation of the homological dimension of the category of rational Mackey functors.22 page

Dandyism against gender: Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, Djuna Barnes, Florine Sttetheimer, Romaine Brooks
From romanticism, as Albert Camus affirms, the artist's task is not only to create a world, nor to exalt beauty on its own, but also to define an attitude. The attitude in dandy is, specifically, the one that makes sense to the lives of many women who during the decade of the tenths and twenties of the last century declared themselves "artists of modernity". This book investigates the life made work, or vice versa, of Baroness Elsa, Djuna Barnes, Florine Stettheimer and Romaine Brooks. It is in fact the text that served as a defense of the doctoral thesis of the same name that its author defended at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Valencia, UPV, in 2009.Fac. de Bellas ArtesTRUEpu
Models of diffuse Hα in the interstellar medium : the relative contributions from in situ ionization and dust scattering
JB acknowledges the support of an STFC studentship. LMH acknowledges support from the US National Science Foundation through award AST-1108911.Using three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiation transfer models of photoionization and dust scattering, we explore different components of the widespread diffuse Hα emission observed in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way and other galaxies. We investigate the relative contributions of Hα from recombination emission in ionized gas and Hα that originates in HII regions near the Galactic mid-plane and scatters off high-altitude dust in the diffuse interstellar medium. For the radiation transfer simulations, we consider two geometries for the interstellar medium: a three-dimensional fractal geometry that reproduces the average density structure inferred for hydrogen in the Milky Way, and a density structure from a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a supernova-driven turbulent interstellar medium. Although some sight lines that are close to HII regions can be dominated by scattered light, overall we find that less than ~20 per cent of the total Hα intensity in our simulations can be attributed to dust scattering. Our findings on the relative contribution of scattered Hα are consistent with previous observational and theoretical analyses. We also investigate the relative contributions of dust scattering and in situ ionization of high-density dust clouds in the diffuse gas. Dust scattering in these partially ionized clouds contribute ~40 per cent to the total intensity of Hα.Peer reviewe
Reconstructing the evolution of the Ironside Mountain batholith, northern California through textural and single-mineral compositional analyses of pyroxene, amphibole, and plagioclase
The ~170-168 Ma Ironside Mountain batholith in northern California encompasses the Ironside Mountain pluton, quartz diorite of Happy Camp Mountain, Wildwood pluton, West China Peak complex, and Denny complex. The Ironside Mountain batholith was emplaced within ca. two m.y. after regional thrusting attributed to the Siskiyou orogeny. Single-mineral compositions in clinopyroxene, hornblende, and plagioclase were measured in-situ by electron-probe micro-analyses and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and coupled with bulk rock X Ray Fluorescence analyses.
Mineral data revealed two compositionally diverse magmas within the Ironside Mountain batholith: A) those of the Ironside Mountain pluton, quartz diorite of Happy Camp Mountain, and Wildwood pluton, which are characterized by two- and three-pyroxene assemblages + ilmenite +magnetite, scant amphibole and biotite, low Mg number, low Cr concentrations, and rare earth element abundances in clinopyroxene and amphibole to 300 times chondrites with deep negative europium anomalies; and B) those of the Denny and West China peak complexes, which are characterized by 2-pyroxene assemblages, have rare earth element abundances in clinopyroxene and amphibole to 50 and 100 times chondrites, respectively, with small to absent europium anomalies. Europium anomalies in clinopyroxene and amphibole of group A suggest crystallization from plagioclase-fractionated melts. Early plagioclase crystallization indicates magmas with low f(H2O). Small to absent europium anomalies in clinopyroxene and hornblende of group B suggests these minerals were liquidus phases without plagioclase, which indicates higher f(H2O). Lower Cr abundances and Mg numbers in clinopyroxene and amphibole from group A suggests their magmas were evolved.
Rimming relationships between clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, and inverted pigeonite, and the absence of clear fractionation trends in major and trace element data of pyroxene and amphibole indicates magmas of the Ironside Mountain pluton did not evolve as a single closed system. Iron-Mg exchange coefficients higher than equilibrium values in amphibole, clinopyroxene, and orthopyroxene; Ab-An exchange coefficients higher than equilibrium values in plagioclase; and the fact that melts calculated from augite compositions display deep negative europium anomalies, but such anomalies are absent in bulk rock rare earth element patterns, indicates partial accumulation of Ca-rich plagioclase, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene occurred.
Clinopyroxene and amphibole compositions from the Ironside Mountain pluton and coeval Wildwood pluton are distinct from those of the Western Hayfork arc. Barnes and Barnes (2020) showed the predominant magma types erupted from the Western Hayfork arc were calc-alkaline or high-Mg andesites and dacites, the latter of which experienced fractionation of garnet at depth. The lack of negative europium anomalies in Western Hayfork augite and hornblende suggests plagioclase was absent early in the crystallization history, which is further evidence of H2O-rich and oxidized magmas (Muntener and others, 2001). Along with the geologic relationships reported by Barnes and others (2006), the compositional distinctions between Western Hayfork arc and Ironside Mountain pluton parental magmas refute the hypothesis that the Ironside Mountain pluton is the intrusive equivalent of the Western Hayfork arc.Restricted until 06/2027. The crisis of modernity : culture, nature, and the modernist yearning for authenticity
The Crisis of Modernity: Culture, Nature, and the Modernist Yearning for Authenticity This dissertation is situated at the intersection of two critical traditions: the discussion about Modernist literature in English and ecocriticism. By viewing a certain strand of literary Modernism through an ecocritical lens, it tries to offer an investigation of salient aspects that arise out of the experience of modernity. In order to stress the relevance of ecocriticism when dealing with Modernist motifs and themes, I chose authors associated with the so-called vitalistic or primitivist side of Modernism. The condemnation of technological progress, the alienation of the individual living in urbanized societies, and the fear of the widening gap of what is natural and what is cultural in ourselves inspire the work of Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell, Djuna Barnes and Claude McKay, and raise important questions for ecocritical consideration. Their severe critique of western civilization suggests that for these authors modernity constitutes a crisis of culture. One of the major aims of my work is to define the crisis of modernity as an environmental crisis. To gain recognition of the environmental aspects underlying this critique of modernity, I begin my analysis by focusing on the depiction of urban contexts as a source of profound conflict. The ensuing argument will center on the notion of the pastoral, which both Miller and Durrell recognize as the traditional mode to express an urban yearning for a utopian counterpoise to civilized life. But rather than promoting an idyllic return to nature, these authors primarily seek to unmask the artificiality of the pastoral enthrallment for the natural world. Instead, they try to revitalize their contact with nature by drawing attention to the individual’s physically embodied experience of his or her immediate environment. By focusing on the body as a medium to recuperate humankind’s original affinity with nature, Miller and Durrell represent a powerful alternative to the pastoral tradition. In my final chapter I extend my ecocritical reading of Modernist literature to Djuna Barnes and Claude McKay. Barnes’s struggle with the gendered landscapes of modernity and McKay’s thematization of ethnic difference offer alternative approaches to the crisis of modernity
