The world of personalities in Selahattin Enis' novels
Selâhattin Enis [Atabeyoğlu] (1892-1942), edebiyat anlayışı ve dünya görüşüyle kimilerince “Türkiye'nin Zola'sı” olarak anılmıştır. Bastırdığı bir hikâye kitabı ve dördü gazetelerde tefrika hâlinde yayımlanmış sekiz romanı bulunan Selâhattin Enis, ilk eseri Neriman'dan başlayarak tüm romanlarında toplum sorunlarını, başta Batılılaşmanın yanlış anlaşılmasına dayanan ahlâkî bozulmaların bireyleri götürdüğü mutsuzluğu, keskin bir gerçekçilikle göstermekten çekinmemiştir. Sanatçının Meşrutiyet dönemi eseri olmasına rağmen Servet-i Fünûn döneminin izlerini taşıyan ilk romanı Neriman, dar bir şahıs kadrosuna sahiptir. Anahtar Sözcükler: Selâhattin Enis, roman, şahıslar, Meşrutiyet dönemi, Cumhuriyet dönemi, natüralizmSelâhattin Enis [Atabeyoğlu] (1892-1942) is, based on his perception of literature and philosophy, considered as “Turkey’s Zola” by some persons. Selâhattin Enis, with his one published and eight novels among which four were published as serials in the newspapers, in all his novels starting from his first novel named “Neriman” showed no hesitation to demonstrate, with absolute realism, social problems and misery the individuals were led by the moral corruptions based on misunderstanding of Westernisation. Neriman, the first novel of the author which although being a work of Constitutional Monarchy Period bore the traces of Servet-i Fünun (The Wealth of Sciences) Period contained a narrow range of characters. In his novels following this first, the author gradually widened the range of his characters and in each novel included more characters against the message he sought to give. The author striving to include as more messages as possible in his eight novels he wrote between 1910-1930 so expanded the range of characters in his last four novels that he sometimes confused the names of his characters and sometimes integrated some of his characters of a previous novel to the next with some slight changes. The novels of the author, many of the characters of which consisted of typecasting, follow the lead of novels of the Constitutional Monarchy Period in terms of introducing the characters in all aspects to readers beforehand, the author taking a side and clearly reflecting the reader his positive or negative feelings he bore for his characters. The fervour to be a naturalist of the artist who showed an encomiastic manner while including in his novels characters one more vivacious than the other in an effort to grip the readers particularly in serials drags the artist into exaggeration in depicting the appearance, odour, belongings and dwellings of particularly the corrupted persons. The novels of Selâhattin Enis, as they are, consist of a variety of characters from mansion dwellers to old fireground residents, ladies of pavilions to women of sidewalks reflecting some features of each period from Constitutional Monarchy Period to the Republic Period. Key Words: Selâhattin Enis, novel, characters, Constitutional Monarchy Period, Republican period, naturalism
Unlocking the value in product return data: Inventory management with sales dependent stochastic product return flows from multiple periods
In the fast fashion retail sector, handling product returns has become a significant challenge due to rapidly changing consumer preferences and high product return rates. These retailers are now inclined to consider product return flows in managing product inventories using detailed product return data. This study investigates an optimal inventory control policy for a retailer facing stochastic product returns from multiple previous sale periods to maximize expected profit during a single selling season. The problem is formulated using dynamic programming, and due to its computational complexity, we propose an Approximate Dynamic Programming value iteration algorithm using basis functions. Our proposed algorithm reduces the solution time drastically without a significant sacrifice from optimality. We quantify the value of leveraging detailed return information and demonstrate that our proposed model increases the retailer's profit by 9% in the base case and up to 31% considering other cases compared to a model ignoring such information, especially under decreasing product prices over time or per period order capacity constraints. Finally, using an extensive computational study, we propose managerial insights on how to best leverage the value in the product return data using advanced analytics for fast-fashion retailers.TÜBİTA
Calculation of NOx Emissions of Short and Medium-haul Domestic Flights with Consideration of the Ambient Effect
8th International Conference on Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (ICMAE) -- JUL 22-25, 2017 -- Prague, CZECH REPUBLICWOS: 000427156200079In this study, NOx emissions of typical flights at two domestic round trip routes (206-271 NM and 625-740NM) are quantified. The flight and engine parameters were obtained from actual flight data records, whereas the emission index of sea level NOx was obtained from the emission database of the International Civil Aviation Organization for a specific type of engine. Using the Boeing Fuel Flow Method 2 for altitude correction, the total flight NOx emissions are found to be on average 66.2 kg for short and 152.2 kg for medium flight distance, showing a NOx per kilometer of between 0.32 and 0.21 g/km. The fraction of landing and takeoff NOx emissions changes between 17.2% and 10.0% on average, depending on flight distance. The average total flight NOx emission per kg fuel burned is calculated to be 31-32 g/kg fuel. When a constant relative humidity is assumed as 60% during an entire flight, the total NOx emissions is found to be up to 12.1 kg lower than for those where the relative humidity depends on altitude.IEEEScientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) [111Y048]; Anadolu University Scientific Research Project Commissions of Turkey [1205F091]This study was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) (Project No: 111Y048) and Anadolu University Scientific Research Project Commissions (Project No: 1205F091) of Turkey. Usage of Machine Learning Algorithms for Flow Based Anomaly Detection System in Software Defined Networks
International Conference on Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems, INFUS 2020, 21 July 2020 through 23 July 2020, , 242349Computer networks are becoming more complex in the number of connected nodes and the amount of traffic. The growing number and increasing complexity of cyber-attacks makes network management and security a challenge. Software defined networks (SDN) technology is a solution that aims for efficient and flexible network management. The SDN controller(s) plays an important role in detecting and preventing cyber-attacks. In this study, a flow-based anomaly detection system running on the POX controller is designed. A comparative analysis of the supervised machine algorithms is given to choose the optimum anomaly detection method in SDN based networks. NSL-KDD dataset is used for training and testing of the classifiers. The results show that machine learning algorithms have great potential in the success of flow-based anomaly detection systems in the SDN infrastructure. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG
Effects of Ambient Air Temperature on Gaseous Emissions of Turbofan Engines
WOS: 000376672600018This study presents the results of analyses related to the effects of ambient air temperature (ranging from 5.2 to 23.9 degrees C) on certain engine performance parameters and gaseous emissions, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. The data set used in the analyses was developed from gaseous-emission measurements of aircraft turbofan engines, during routine test-cell operations after overhauls. The engine focused on is the CFM56-7B26. Because the data were recorded in a continuous manner, all of the parameters have been characterized throughout the operations between idle to takeoff power. Two important parameters, combustion efficiency and specific fuel consumption, are also identified for all of the power settings, and are used to evaluate the effects of ambient air temperature on emissions. The results suggest that ambient air temperature is negatively correlated with thrust and pressure ratios, whereas it is positively correlated with exhaust-gas and combustor-inlet temperatures. In addition, the effects of ambient air temperature on thrust, combustor-inlet pressure, and overall and high-pressure compressor pressure ratios are higher at higher power settings than at lower power settings. Furthermore, the higher the ambient air temperature is, the higher are the combustion efficiency and specific fuel consumption, particularly at low power settings. At ground-idle power settings, the specific fuel consumption is found to be 41 and 24 g/kNs for above and below 14.0 degrees C of ambient air temperature. The nitrogen oxides results are generally found to be lower than the International Civil Aviation Organization nitrogen oxides values, and the results point out, as anticipated, a tendency toward higher nitrogen oxides at higher ambient air temperatures. Carbon monoxide emissions at low power settings are found to be highly variable compared to those for the International Civil Aviation Organization values, due to the fact that the carbon monoxide emissions are strong functions of engine power at low power settings, and any difference in engine power leads to substantial differences in carbon monoxide emissions. Therefore, this difference is addressed to the difference in idle power assumption of the International Civil Aviation Organization. The effects of ambient air temperature on carbon monoxide emissions also suggest a negative correlation, particularly at low power settings, whereas it is not as discernible as with the nitrogen oxides emissions.Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) of Turkey [111Y048]; Anadolu University Scientific Research Project Commissions of Turkey [1205F091]; Turkish Airlines; Turkish Technic, Inc.This study was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) (project number 111Y048) and the Anadolu University Scientific Research Project Commissions (project number 1205F091) of Turkey, in partnership with Turkish Airlines and Turkish Technic, Inc. Reception of Works of Julije Makanec in Croatian Philosophy since 1990. Fragments without Synthesis
Although almost 20 years passed since the collapse of political system in which Croatian philosopher and politician Julije Makanec (1904–1945) was sistematically ignored, neither under new political circumstances his work is not properly and sistematically studied and ellaborated, although he deserves it, author thinks. Author describes what has been published since 1990 on Makanec and suggests possible reasons why there is still no proper study of his work, especially his books on philosophy of state and philosophy of politics
On Journalists’ QuestionOn some Problems of Journalists’ Practice and unsolved Legacy of Nineties
Temeljem tridesetogodišnjeg novinarskog iskustva u dnevnom novinarstvu autor analizira neke segmente hrvatskog medijskog prostora, a posebnu pozornost posvećuje nužnosti većeg profesionalizma i odgovornijem odnosu prema činjenicama. Nedostatna razina profesionalizma našla je plodno tlo na nasljeđu žutog, neprofesionalnog i mrzilačkog novinarstva u nekim mainstream medijima početkom devedesetih.Based on 30 years of journalist experience in daily journalism, the author analyzes some segments of the Croatian media environment, and pays special attention to the need for greater professionalism and a more responsible attitude to the facts. Certain lack of professionalism found fertile ground in the legacy of yellow, unprofessional and hateful journalism in some mainstream media in the early 1990’s
An application of community discovery in academical social networks
Arslan, Enis (Dogus Author)The objective of this thesis is to discover social communities in a social network using different social network community discovery methods that utilizes metrics and structures like degree, clustering coefficient, k-cores, weak and strong components. In this study we have used two different datasets: DBLP and Arxiv High-energy physics theory citation network. Two Social Network Analysis tools are used in this thesis: Pajek and Gephi. In order to use Pajek and Gephi, DBLP dataset is converted by developing a new conversion and refinement framework. After dataset conversion, we have used Pajek tool to discover communities by applying several clustering metrics to the social networks. Additionally, Gephi tool is used for supporting the analysis of discovering communities by using extended metrics. Gephi tool enables visualization of the results graphically and gives the reports of the analyses. At the end of the analyses, we have obtained several reports and graphs that show triads and skeleton structure of the communities in the networks. These reports and graphs give social communities and the leaders of networks and several characteristics of these communities.
