Effect of Letting Students Choose the Weight of Each Assessment Category for the Semester Grade
To increase inclusivity and equity, higher education instructors are adopting the universal design for learning (UDL) approach in their classrooms. While the principles of UDL are evidence-based, they additionally allow flexibility in meeting the needs of our students. One of the three principles of UDL is action and expression, that is, how can an instructor provide alternative options to students to demonstrate what they know. This paper concentrates on an instance of this principle in action and its effect in a Numerical Methods course at the University of South Florida. The author has many means of assessments in the course that count toward the final grade, and to give students some ownership of learning, the students could choose a specific percentage weight for each assessment category of the course. About 16% of the students received a higher grade than they would have otherwise got

Several techniques employed by highly effective educators (Efed) to bring gender diversity and opportunity to its profession are discussed. Efed recognizes that old teaching tools are still effective, whether it is using the chalkboard to derive a formula while punctuating the derivation effectively with underlying principles from previously covered content, or its is maintaining eye contact with the students. Efed encourages students to work in teams and study in groups. Efed continually learns new ways of teaching via new textbooks, continuing education classes, education articles, and new multimedia resources

Incorporating a Research Problem in a Numerical Methods Course for Mechanical Engineers
This paper presents an example of incorporating a research problem in a course - Numerical Methods for Mechanical Engineers. In bascule bridges, the fulcrum is assembled by shrink-fitting a trunnion into a hub. In one case, the trunnion cooled in a dry-ice/alcohol mixture for shrink fitting got stuck halfway in the hub. Answering the question why the trunnion got stuck in the hub and finding a solution to the problem, involved numerical solution of mathematical procedures including nonlinear equations, simultaneous linear equations, interpolation, regression, integration, and ordinary differential equations. Students and faculty highly appreciate using this problem-centered approach to teaching the course

On Evaluating Integrals with Strongly Singular Integrands
The solution of many mixed boundary value problems in engineering is found in terms of singular integral equations. These equations may require numerical evaluation of integrals with strongly singular integrands. Two simple algorithms based on an adaptive scheme are written to evaluate these integrals in the Hadamard sense. The results are compared with exact results available for specific integrands
