The German federal government first coined industry 4.0 in 2011. Industry 4.0 involves the use of
advanced technologies such as cyber-physical system, internet of things, cloud computing, and
cognitive computing with the aim to revolutionize the current manufacturing practices.
Automation and exchange of big data and key characteristics of Industry 4.0. Due to its numerous
benefits, industries are readily investing in Industry 4.0, but this implementation is an uphill
struggle.
In this thesis, we address three key problems related to Industry 4.0 implementation namely
Enterprise selection, Project selection and Workforce selection. The first problem involves
identification of enterprises suitable for Industry 4.0 implementation. The second problem involves
prioritization and selection of Industry 4.0 projects for the chosen digital enterprises. The third and
last problem involves workforce selection and assignment for execution of the identified Industry
4.0 projects. Multicriteria solution approaches based on TOPSIS and Genetic Algorithms are
proposed to address these problems. Industry experts are involved to prioritize the criteria used for
enterprise, project and workforce selection. Numerical applications are provided.
The proposed work is innovative and can be useful to manufacturing and service organizations
interested in implementing Industry 4.0 projects for performance improvement

A novel algorithm for transforming row-oriented databases into column-oriented databases
ME, CSEDWith the development of cloud computing and distributed system, more and more
applications are started to migrate to the cloud to use its computing power and
scalability. These systems require interaction of heterogeneous data and applications
that involves databases that store the data of the common domain under different
representations. The interactions are result of schema mappings and transformation
that is also called data migration. The above interaction of different systems and
integration is known as information integration.
Two well-known approaches to information integration are data exchange and
data integration. In the first approach, data is extracted from multiple heterogeneous
sources, restructured into a common format, and finally transformed into a target
schema. In second approach, several local databases are queried by users through a
single, integrated global schema. Mappings are determined to know, how the queries
that users pose on the global schema are to be reconstructed in terms of the local
schemas.
In this thesis, a novel approach is proposed that transforms a relational
database into a column-oriented database. Out of various available column-oriented
databases like HBase, Cassandra etc., we have considered HBase for the study, which
is an open-source distributed database and similar to BigTable which is the database
proposed and used by Google. For relational database, we have considered
PostgreSQL. The transformation procedure is divided into two phases. First relational
schema is transformed into HBase schema based on the data model of HBase. Using
four rules, HBase schema is extracted from PostgreSQL schema which could be
further utilized to develop an HBase application. In the second phase, relationships
between elements of two schemas are expressed as a set of nested schema mappings,
which could be further used to create a set of nested queries that transform the
PostgreSQL database into the HBase database representation automatically
The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Inequality
Income inequality has always been a problem, especially in Southeast Asia. It
is vulnerable to create a disparity and unjust feeling among the society which could
potentially raise a social and political conflict within a country. On the other hand,
nowadays FDI has been sought by countries in this globalization era in order to
sought economic development, income growth and employment absorption. Southeast
Asia has been known for its developing attraction for hosting foreign investment. The
region has always taken part in attracting attention, particularly in the theme of
potential market, resources and investment environment. However, there are still only
several studies that explain the relationship of FDI as the economic integration
instrument towards income inequality. These studies also present contradicting results
in explaining the FDI-income inequality nexus. Therefore, this research aims to to
compare and explain the impact of sectoral foreign direct investment towards income
inequality in the region of Southeast Asia. It also aims to provide results with the
presence of country’s capability in explaining the relationship between FDI per
sectors and income inequality, which derived from the capability approach. Lastly, it
also aims to provide evidence and suggestion on factors from county’s set of
capabilities that significantly affecting FDI and income inequality relationship.
On that regards, this research confirms the non-linear relationship between the
three major FDI sectors towards gini index of income inequality. Furthermore, results
also confirm the significance of capability approach concept in determining the
relationship of FDI and income inequality. The presence of three country’s
capabilities, namely, human, infrastructure, and government capability are significant
in providing instantaneous effect towards FDI in effecting income inequality.
However, the significant level only appears in service and manufacturing sectors.
Agriculture sector, on the other hand, does not appear to be significant, even in the
presence of capability approach. From this result, human capability is arguably the
most important capability in determining the impact of FDI towards income
inequality as in often appear to be a significant mediating variable. Their indicators of
Gross National Income (GNI) and tertiary enrollment rates are mostly significant in
all final regression models in each FDI sectors. Some indicators from infrastructure
and government capability are also appear to be significant at times with mobile
subscriptions and corruption index as the most often indicators to have significance
level
Spatial Characteristics of internationally competitive cities
Due to globalization, traditional factors of competitive advantage (e.g. markets, natural resources, and labour) have become highly mobile, thereby permanently transforming the way in which cities and businesses compete for economic development. In this context, innovation became the leading driver of economic development in advanced economies. Because innovation requires continuous and efficient interfacing, businesses in knowledge-intensive industries tend to seek physical proximity to external factors (e.g. complimentary and supporting businesses, markets demands, and highly-skilled workers). Businesses also cluster together to take advantage of factors that are available only in economies of scale (e.g. well-developed infrastructure). As epicentres of agglomeration, cities are uniquely positioned to provide the set of urban amenities necessary for innovation and business growth in a global economy. However, cities are very diverse, as are the amenities that they provide. Consequently, some cities outperform others in attracting innovation-driven, knowledge-intensive industries. This heightens competitiveness between cities as they strive to increase their social and economic development.
While many studies have investigated the impact of urban socio-economic characteristics on competitiveness, there is a knowledge gap in the specific study of urban spatial characteristics and their impact on the attraction of Foreign Direct Investment. To help fill the gap, this study was conducted to identify the most relevant urban spatial characteristics to the clustering of Multinational Corporations in mid-sized north-western European cities. The aim was to provide an understanding of which urban spatial characteristics should be prioritized for economic growth in order to guide local and regional policies as well as urban design.
A unique methodology was developed to generate proximity data from geographically mapped spatial characteristics in 11 cities, which were then analysed through multiple negative binominal regressions. Findings confirmed that proximity to architectural aesthetics, train stations, well-connected streets, and local service firms all increase FDI clustering. In contrast, proximity to road interchanges, parks, and local hi-tech firms were found to decrease FDI clustering. In the interest of investigating the effect of proximity at the regional level, additional analysis was conducted using proximity data from twin cities. Results confirmed nearness affinity between FDI clusters in a city and architectural landmarks, local firms, and road interchanges in a neighbouring city. This study culminates on a set of recommendation to the city of Rotterdam aimed at improving international attractiveness and competitiveness through urban spatial design

Being Sikh, being women: negotiating religion and gender in South Asian women's cultural productions
This dissertation addresses the relationship between gender and religion in Canada, specifically focusing on the Sikh woman. Using a multidisciplinary approach to examine cultural productions such as film, literature, drama and images from the World Wide Web, the dissertation concludes that the Sikh woman is emerging as a controversial new religious figure. I suggest that what materializes are figures of Sikh women who struggle with navigating and negotiating their own reinterpretations of religious symbols. I look at two poetry collections, Dharma Rasa and Valley Sutra by Kuldip Gill; a film, Heaven on Earth, by Deepa Mehta; a play, Behzti (Dishonour) by playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti; a novel, Everything Was Good-Bye by Gurjinder Basran; a memoir, On the Outside Looking Indian: How My Second Childhood Changed My Life by Rupinder Gill; and images of Sikh women wearing turbans from the blogosphere and newspapers. Each of the above cultural and literary productions concentrates on Sikh women's experiences and how they change, modify and/or maintain their religious identity, but the question remains as to how their voices, bodies and images have been transmitted within the diasporas
