Oral history interview with Beth Mlynarek Kaufman, 2023 September 8
Beth Mlynarek Kaufman speaks about her experiences at Michigan State University as a baton twirler and one of the two first female members of the MSU Spartan Marching Band. Beth transferred to MSU from Western Michigan University in 1972 and obtained her B.A. in elementary education in 1975 and her M.A. in education in 1977. She shares how the passing of Title IX is what drew her to transfer to MSU and the opportunities it gave other women in sports. She details the challenges of being a woman in a male dominated group, and how some of the men protested and threatened to quit if women were allowed in the band. Beth reveals how after a short time, some of the men that originally ignored or protested her had become her friends. She describes her participation in the alumni marching and talks about some differences she's noticed in the band over the years. H2O in Interstellar Space: How the Universe Conspires to Make Water Everywhere
On October 28, 2015, Dr. Michael Kaufman spoke in the University Scholar Series hosted by Provost Andy Feinstein at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. His talk was titled “H2O in Interstellar Space: How the Universe Conspires to Make Water, Water Everywhere.” Dr. Kaufman\u27s astrophysics research focuses on the interactions and feedback between newly formed stars and the interstellar medium—the raw material from which stars form. He constructs computational models of the radiative transfer, dynamics and chemistry that occur in regions of active star formation, and uses these models to interpret observations with ground-based, airborne, and space-based telescopes. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed in the upper-left corner; the number ''382'' is handwritten adjacent to it. The number ''2'' is printed in the upper-right corner. A vignette of a steam tug and ships appears in the upper-center of the note. The amount ''TWO DOLLARS'' is printed across the face of the note. The word ''TWO'' and the number ''2'' are printed in green ink. A decorative green overprint covers most of the note. The following imprint appears in the center of the bottom edge of the note: [Texas Pr House, Houston--E. W. Cave.] The note is signed on the recto by A. B. Robinson, County Treasurer; Percival Mucklaw Moorhouse, County Clerk; and William Duncan Irvine, Chief Justice. The word ''Boboon'' is written on the verso. Two Robinsons are listed in Kaufman County in the 1870 Census, A. B. Robinson and Aron B. Robinson. Moorhouse, a native of England, served in the Civil War, was elected county clerk from 1862-1864, and is buried in the Becker family cemetery in Kaufman County (TXGenWeb: Kaufman County--Civil War Soldiers Known to be Buried in Kaufman County Texas and Becker Family Cemetery).
