Usage notes and labelling practicies in J.S. Bandtkie’s dictionary – types, functions and frequency. The present text discusses the issues related to the phenomenon that is enormously important for the study of historical lexicography, namely the issue of usage notes and labelling practices used in dictionaries. The author focuses on the types of stylistic and context markers used in the dictionary compiled by J.S. Bandtkie, their differentiation and estimated frequency of application (frequency of occurrence of given markers against others), and the consistency in the application of specific solutions by the author of the dictionary. Special attention is given to some of the aspects of the use of grammatical information in J.S. Bandtkie’s work and to the consistency in using given adopted solutions. The article also includes some general remarks on the scientific merit of the dictionary, one of the most extensive, as far as the lexical resources are concerned, historical dictionaries of the Polish language

The author draws attention to the fact that there is no uniform concept of digitizing these collections, the very process of digitisation is proceeding according to the different me-thods. He also draws attention to the need for further digitalistaion of dictionary collections according to a single key, which will create more job opportunities on the lexical material and allow more opportunities tu study the statistical data

Opening sentences in Marek Krajewski’s novels

    No full text
Opening sentences raise a lot of interest of both linguists and common Polish speakers. It is evident from numerous websites in which Internet users share their observations on the best opening sentences of books (most often novels), as well as theoretical papers and writing guides. The analysis of opening sentences of ten novels by Marek Krajewski (co-author of two of them being Mariusz Czubaj) is to provide an answer to the question to what extent the utterance opening of the texts of the Wroc³aw-based prose writer fulfill the requirements to be met by such type of constructions. It turns out that most crucial are syntactic and semantic features rather than lexical ones. The clash between theoretical assumptions and the M. Krajewski’s writing practice shows that opening sentences of his novels not always fall into classical determinants of incipient formulas. It also illustrates the thesis that a skillful writer does not need to cling to theoretical assumptions to create good opening sentences and novels translated into nearly twenty languages
