Frogs, people and the world of meanings – problems of sustainable development in Poland
In the article author discusses problem of connection between environmental policy, social and cultural life in Poland. When talking about sustainable development, we should keep in mind not only statistic data related to local communities but also meanings that they put to natural environment. Do authorities take citizens opinion into consideration at all? Do ecological organizations see correlation between protection of nature and protection of cultural values? Is creating such a link possible at all? These and many other questions are considered according to field research conducted by author in Białowieża.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. From the Biblical Tower of Babel to the contemporary “mixed world”
There is a particular concept in the language of the inhabitants of Belarus, namely that of the mixed world. Its meaning is the equivalent of a “cultural borderland”, the reality of multiculturalism. Mixed world refers to rapid changes as well as their effects (one of them is the coexistence of elements of an old and a new order). The author points out that the term can be used to good effect in scholarly studies as synonymous with “cultural borderland”, “multiculturalism” or “intercultural spaces”. While asked about the origins of the mixed world, Belarussian people referred to the Biblical account of the Tower of Babel. It tells about God who “confounded the languages” of the builders of the Tower in order to punish their pride. The author remarks that the same account tells about the builders being scattered all over the earth, that being the origin of numerous migrations. Migrations are inscribed in the history of the human world. The phenomenon is sure to grow in intensity, as it brings considerable benefits to many people. Lithuania is an example of a country where migration is of mass character. Recently for several years nearly one fifth of its population has left the country, and many others also declare their intention to leave. Referring to her own field research, the author points out the determinants as well as the results of mass migration from Lithuania. At the same time she shows that Lithuania is becoming an attractive labour market for many immigrants. This is the way in which, owing to various migrations the new mixed world is emerging, the world which is not free of conflicts and fears for the future.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. Ethnodesign – the tradition and the present time. An attempt of a contemporary comment
The article describes ethnodesign, understood as a synonym of material creativity which draws on the models of traditional craft and folk art. The author treats ethnodesign as an idea in which we should notice a number of senses and complex actions, aimed at the revival in the context of contemporary culture. The revival of general forms, principles and values which are the basis of life in traditional folk culture. The author presents an extensive outline of the history of Polish ethnodesign, starting from the end of 19th century to the beginning of 21st century; she illustrates the links with folklorism, she indicates the need of multi-faceted understanding of its contemporary sociocultural functions. She states that, firstly, ethnodesign should be understood as a collection of items which use styles, patterns, materials and forms taken from folk culture; secondly, what is important is the significance of ethnodesign in the system of relationships and social activities that are initiated in the process of making items of this kind. And thirdly, ethnodesign may serve to evoke traditional way of thinking and perceiving the world and refer to former elementary values, norms and principles known from the folk culture. The author emphasizes the need of liberating contemporary ethnodesign from stereotypical associations and the necessity of noticing its important role in the contemporary culture, which, in different ways, seeks alternative to everything that is unified, global, identical and temporary. Ethnodesign understood in this way can help to open to cultural diversity, close and distant traditions, and can also help build more aware and committed participation in culture, its tradition and present social life.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”.
Rusticity as otherness
This article is an attempt at an analysis of the meaning of the category of rurality presented from the perspective of “otherness”. The author begins from a sociological formulation of the notional opposition “we”-“others”. She has used the concept of F. Znaniecki, explaining the antagonism towards others, and the concept of G. Simmel, as well as their application in the works of Polish researchers of the rural culture. The author has reviewed the meanings of the category of “countryside” and “rurality”, which in the postmodern era are constructed socially and refer more to the sphere of culture rather than to the description of real geographical space. As a result, in the social discourse there function various narrations of rurality from a pastoral narration, presenting the countryside as rural idyll, to the postmodern narrations, exposing the backwardness and underdevelopment of the countryside. The category of “otherness” appears in the context of rural problems as an overt or hidden category. The former is used to emphasize the differences between the rural and the non-rural world, the latter functions as a latent cognitive structure.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. The culture called folk-culture. A defunct notion or a perspective of research on localness?
The text is discussing contemporary meaning of the folk culture as the notion often appearing at Polish anthropological publications and in the colloquial language. Leaving from the problem of the mythologisation of the folk culture the author is seeking new meaning of this culture which can turn out to be useful in research of local world, the local communities or nature of the localness in postmodern woeld.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. From local to global: European culture heritage and EU policy
The notion of ethnic and cultural identity has modern connotations that give the problem of identity new meaning. On the one side there is consideration of human rights and acceptance of individual and collective identity. On the other, there are the social, political, and economic problems connected with European integration and progressive globalization. The concept of European cultural integrity and mutual cultural heritage emerged after World War II in response to war crimes and deficiencies in the existing international laws and conventions. In this article, the author gives a short outline of relevant European documents, such as acts, conventions, and programs dealing with the problem of cultural diversity and unity. The author gives special attention to the aspect of common culture heritage, both tangible and intangible, and underlines that EU policy treats safeguarding, protection, and conservation of cultural heritage both as an obligation of European member states and as an ongoing activity of citizens, in the frame of heritage NGOs.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. Think locally, act globally : on the human development under globalization
The authors argue that the statement firstly used by ecologists and economists does not reflect the nature of balanced relations between the local and the global in contemporary society. It rather reflects the domination of the global over the local. In order to formulate the contradicting argument one has to start with redefinition of locality. Locality has to be conceptualized not as a traditional community but rather as a place and/or new local/glocal community. The changes in glocal community have been connected with two types of development mechanisms, namely: the neo-endogenous and sustainable ones. Both have been focused on the cooperation between local and extra-local actors. Therefore they show to change somehow society we have to think in a perspective of particular localities and later act global in order to form a network of governance to elaborate and implement particular developmental strategies
Agriculture in the McWorld
The chapter coins and develops a thesis that agriculature all over the world has been seized by McWorld - that is by an omnipotent Market - that resulted in creation of latifundum, in transformation of peasants into rural workers, and in the commodification of food. Special attention has been paid to the issue of the McWorld's impact on the Polish agriculture
