I Was Young When I Left Home

I Was Young When I Left Home is a work of memoir/creative non-fiction that follows the coming of age of Eric Foley from 1998-2003. As a young man, Eric struggles with depression, substance abuse and the death of his sister. Following 9/11 and the American invasion of Afghanistan, he moves to Morocco to teach English, where he ends up converting to Islam and marrying an eighteen-year-old Moroccan girl. The book explores responses to trauma on personal and national levels, examining the consequences of trying to escape one's past. What does it means to come up against the limits of the body? How is the self continually formed through contact with culture, family, friends and the world at large? How do we come to make the decisions of our early adult lives?2999-01-0

Co-creative publics and publication design practice

This study is situated in the practice of publication design. I characterise publication design as the act of bringing thoughts, opinions, information and stories into the public realm. A publication artefact in this study refers to the material and non-material form that the communication takes, such as print, web, audio, or discourse and event.Through this study I make the case that the professional, mainstream practice of publication design will change in relation to the way a public for it changes. In this, design practice is likely to be transformed in a way that is similar to the transformation in other related practices such as media and commerce. On completion of this study, I believe it can be argued that publication design is moving from a broadcast medium to a social and relational one, where the audience participates in the production of meaning (or sense-making) by attaining a closer relationship to the production of design. I use the term co-creative public to describe this audience. The characteristics of this public are that it is self-organised, freely associated and forms in response to attention (Warner 2002).As the relationship between designer and audience evolves reciprocally, it is possible to reinterpret the role of the professional designer and to identify the new opportunities presented

Use of Foley catheter in control of internal carotid hemorrhage during endoscopic endonasal surgery

Internal carotid artery (ICA) injuries during endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) are rare life-threatening events. We describe a technique to manage ICA injuries based on the use of Foley catheters.A 26-year-old female underwent endoscopic transnasal trans-sphenoidal removal of pituitary adenoma. Cerebrospinal fluid leak occurred 4 days postoperatively. During repair procedure, accidental injury of ICA occurred. Emergency nasal packing through positioning of four Foley urologic catheters was successfully performed to stop bleeding. The patient did not report neurologic deficits. In author’s opinion, Foley catheters are suitable to obtain immediate bleeding control since they are rapidly available and easily usable
