Thermodynamic analysis of solar-based photocatalytic hydrogen sulphide dissociation for hydrogen production
The dissociation of gaseous hydrogen sulphide (H2S) into its components is an energy intensive process. The process is studied in this paper with respect to the thermodynamic limits. The band gap of the catalyst and the nature of the solar radiation limit the proportion of incoming radiation that may be used for the reaction. The intensity of the incoming radiation and the reactor temperature are varied and the performance is studied. The exergy efficiency is determined as a function of the quantum efficiency of the photochemical process, and the catalyst band gap. It is shown that an optimum case exergy efficiency of up to 28% can be achieved for the process. With the current status of technology, an exergy efficiency value in the region of 0.4–1% is calculated, with a short-term improvement potential of up to 10%. Hydrogen sulfide has high energy content, but is not widely used due to its impact on environmental pollution. The proposed process in this paper is attractive as it allows that energy to be utilized, while degrading the highly toxic gas into less harmful products
Recovery of magnesium from RO concentrate for struvite production
Magnesium is one of the most critical natural resources and 96% of magnesium used in Europe is imported. The present study investigated possible ways of implementing circularity in the magnesium cycle within the borders of Waternet, a water utility in the Netherlands. The wastewater treatment plant at Amsterdam-West produces struvite from anaerobic digestate. The production of struvite requires 4400 tons of 32% MgCl2 annually. At the same time, a reverse osmosis (R.O.) process treating brackish groundwater for drinking water production produces a concentrate rich in magnesium ions. This R.O. concentrate, after being treated by aeration and filtration to remove iron and ammonium, is considered for use in the wastewater struvite recovery process. Technologies for recovering magnesium from this R.O. concentrate were investigated in this study. After analyzing the constraints of the magnesium dosing system, the struvite reactor, and the R.O. concentrate composition, two technologies were selected for the study of Mg2+ recovery: Nano-filtration (N.F.) and Ion exchange. The present study investigated both these processes via software simulations and laboratory experiments. The study revealed that while the N.F. process is not viable, the cation exchange using a weak chelating resin AmberLite IRC747 in Na+ form (regeneration with H2SO4 and NaOH) is possible when the resin is saturated with divalent cations. The regenerant stream (produced via acid regeneration) is a sodium-free stream having gypsum precipitates. After gypsum separation, the process created an Mg2+ dose with a concentration of 4.45 g/l. This study developed a 1 step process for extracting Mg2+ from RO concentrate.Civil Engineering | Environmental Engineerin

Thermal vacancies in HCP helium-4
Activation energies of thermal vacancies have been determined in hcp \sp4He as a function of molar volume. A sensitive strain gauge was used to measure the temperature dependence of the pressure in twenty crystals between 18.17 and 20.9 cm\sp3/mole. Absolute lattice parameters at low temperatures were measured for many of these crystals. The temperature dependence of the relative lattice parameter was measured in selected crystals. This provided lower bounds on the vacancy activation energy. The activation energies determined here agree at all reported molar volumes with those from previous measurements of pressure in hcp \sp4He. The lower bounds on the activation energies from the relative lattice parameter measurements are consistent with those determined from the pressure. Below 20 cm\sp3/mole the activation energies reported here are in disagreement with those from ion mobility, NMR, and plastic deformation experiments. The determination of vacancy activation energies from the measured pressure requires knowledge of the phonon pressure. Difficulties with the present understanding of the phonon pressure are discussed.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T14:25:19Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 2

On The Relationship Between Idea-Quantity and Idea-Quality During Ideation
A great deal of research has been conducted to develop methods and techniques to improve group ideation. Most of this research focuses on techniques for increasing the quantity of ideas generated during ideation; less attention has been given to the quality of the ideas produced. This focus stems from the widely held quantity–quality conjecture, that, all else being equal, more ideas give rise to more good ideas. In this paper, we argue that cognitive inertia and scarcity of solution space may affect the relationship between idea-quantity and idea-quality as ideation proceeds, resulting in a condition of diminishing returns for additional ideas. Results of a laboratory study using fourteen groups supported the diminishing returns hypothesis. Recommendations for future ideation research are suggested.Systems EngineeringTechnology, Policy and Managemen
Scale up of surfactant alternating gas foam processes
Foam increases sweep efficiency during gas injection in enhanced oil recovery (EOR)processes by reducing gas mobility. In fact, foam is the only EOR technology that isable to fight against both gravity segregation and geological heterogeneity. Surfactant Alternating Gas, or SAG, is the preferred method to place foam into the reservoir for both operational and injectivity reasons. For example, this method of injection avoids the difficulties of having foam in the injection lines. Injecting foam in this manner also offers better injectivity than in foam-injection processes in which pregenerated foam is injected into the reservoir
Experimental investigation of a solar tower based photocatalytic hydrogen production system
In this paper, production of hydrogen from concentrated solar radiation is examined by a laboratory scale solar tower system that is capable of handling continuous flow photocatalysis. The system is built and studied under a solar simulator with an aiming area of 20 × 20 cm2. The fraction of solar spectrum useful for water splitting depends on the energy band gap of the selected photocatalyst. Two types of nano-particulate photocatalysts are used in this work: ZnS (3.6 eV) and CdS (2.4 eV). The effect of light concentration on photocatalysis performance is studied using Alfa Aesar 99.99% pure grade, 325 mesh ZnS nano-particles. An improved quantum efficiency of 73% is obtained as compared to 45% with the same sample under non-concentrated light in a previous study. Only 1.1% of the energy of the solar radiation spectrum can be used by ZnS catalyst. A mixture of CdS and ZnS nano-particulate photocatalysts (both Alfa Aesar 99.99% pure grade, 325 mesh) is used to conduct a parametric study for a wider spectrum capture corresponding to 18% of the incident energy. Hydrogen production increases from 0.1 mmol/h to 0.21 mmol/h when the operating conditions are varied from 25 °C and 101 kPa to 40 °C and 21 kPa absolute pressures. Furthermore, the implementation of a continuous flow process results in an improvement in the energy efficiency by a factor of 5.5 over the batch process
