Technology Transfer for Development: Insights from the Introduction of Low Cost Water Well Drilling Technology to Uganda
Third World development theory and practice are changing so rapidly that it is
important to critically examine the fashions of today before they become history. This
thesis considers the development, transfer, early adoption and sustainable use of
technology, coupled with private sector participation in rural water supply provision.
Improving water supplies for rural communities is one of the key challenges
faced by development interventionists today. Lack of low cost, off the shelf technology
for local enterprise which can provide affordable shallow wells for rural communities is
one barrier to facilitating improvements.
This thesis is based on research undertaken in Uganda to develop and transfer
low cost water drilling technology in the context of decentralisation and privatisation
policies. An extensive range of literature has been drawn together into 16 principles
which guide technology transfer and development intervention. These principles are reexamined
in the light of analysis of first hand experiences of undertaking a technology
transfer project and interviews with stakeholders regarding their attitudes and
perceptions.
The research found that technology transfer is a cross-disciplinary and cross
cultural process in which the linkages between the technology, context, individuals,
organisations and beneficiaries need to be firmly established. Ugandan business and
local Government culture plays a major role in facilitating successful technology
uptake. Dealing with the risks associated with low cost groundwater technology is
fundamental for its wider adoption. The process of technology transfer is important,
particularly as high levels of stakeholder participation may compromise the delivery of
outputs, at least in the short term.
In terms of future challenges, this thesis shows that, culture, governance and
equity need to be closely examined in relation to private sector participation in rural
infrastructure provision. Private sector participation can conflict with community
participation. How to adequately support innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa while
harmonising development interventions is a challenge to the development community

Whittier House scrapbooks document Whittier House programs, events, and anniversary celebrations through newspaper clippings, lecture fliers, newsletters, event programs, and ticket stubs. Newspaper clippings are primarily from the Jersey Journal. There is also Whittier House fundraising materials, including pamphlets, appeal letters, brochures, and postcards. The Whittier House Social Settlement, the first settlement house in New Jersey, was established in Jersey City, N.J. (Hudson County) in 1894. Founded by Cornelia Foster Bradford, who would remain with the organization as headworker until 1926, Whittier House was based on the settlement house, Toynbee Hall, in England. Whittier House provided various recreational and educational programs, along with much needed social services, for the immigrant populations of Jersey City. Many of these successful services were used as models for large-scale social reform movements through the state. In 1935, the Whittier House was taken over by the Boys' Club of Jersey City
Experience of laparoscopic cholecystectomy under spinal anesthesia with low-pressure pneumoperitoneum - prospective study of 300 cases
Introduction : Having long experience of open upper abdominal surgery under spinal anesthesia and laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia, we performed this study of laparoscopic cholecystectomy with low-pressure pneumoperitoneum under spinal anesthesia to assess its safety and feasibility. Materials and Methods : In a private rural health set-up, 300 patients were selected prospectively for laparoscopic cholecystectomy under low-pressure (8 mm) pneumoperitoneum under spinal anesthesia in a span of three years. Only 3.5 ml of 0.5% bupivacaine was used for spinal anesthesia. Fourth port positioned at lower than usual at the level of umbilicus, change of position of the table with different stages of operation, massaging of right shoulder in cases of shoulder pain, removal of smoke if formed during dissection to diminish shoulder pain and holding the body of the gallbladder by the fourth port grasper at the level of lower margin of the liver in cases of long gallbladder were some modifications of standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy made in this study. Results: We successfully performed the operations in 291 patients without major complications. Four patients denied operation under spinal anesthesia. Spinal anesthesia was converted to general anesthesia in two patients due to severe shoulder pain. The operation was converted to open cholecystectomy in three patients. Mean age was 34.6 years (range 21-82 years). Mean BMI was -23.1 (range 20.8-28.3). Mean duration of operation was 39.6 min (range 18-78 min). Mean O 2 saturation was 97.6%. Mean peak respiratory rate was 23.4 (range 16-38). 90.08% patients complained of right shoulder pain - most of them managed by shoulder massage alone. All patients were satisfied on follow up.
Conclusion : Laparoscopic cholecystectomy under spinal anesthesia with low-pressure pneumoperitoneum can be performed safely and satisfactorily without major complications by experienced surgeons
Low-Code Development: Using OutSystems Platform
The features and capabilities of low-code technologies were analyzed. Starting with a brief history of the Low-Code movement and later on how it evolved. We discuss the advantages of Low-Code and compare it with No-Code. Throughout this thesis, a Low-Code development platform, the OutSystems Platform, was fully explained. OutSystems is a Low-Code Development Platform, founded in 2001 in Lisbon, Portugal, which allows the building of responsive and flexible apps in a very swift development lead time. OutSystems offers itself as a platform as a service (PasS) going further beyond enabling the RAD approach by including hosting, dynamic scaling, release automation, performance monitoring much more. The development tools and components of OutSystems were presented in a practical way. And a web app to help students review and add places they liked was created.BSc/BAComputer Scienc
Genetic interactions between Kar and PI3K.
(A) In Fed48 larvae, both PromE>Kar Ri and PromE>Dp110DN genotypes accumulate low levels of oenocyte lipid droplets and this is also seen in PromE>Kar Ri Dp110DN. In NR larvae, PromE>Dp110DN does not noticeably alter lipid droplet induction and thus inhibition of NR droplet induction is similar in PromE>Kar Ri and in PromE>Kar Ri Dp110DN. Oenocyte volume in both Fed48 and NR larvae is increased in PromE>Kar Ri but decreased in PromE>Kar Ri Dp110DN to a similar extent as for PromE>Dp110DN alone. Panels show single confocal sections and the scale bar is 10 μm. (B) Relative neutral lipid content of oenocytes in Fed48 larvae of the genotypes in panel A. (C) Oenocyte volumes of the genotypes in panel A in Fed48 and NR66 larvae, demonstrating that PromE-GAL4 driving the expression of Dp110DN is epistatic to Kar RNAi with respect to cell size. Statistical significance in Student t tests is indicated with asterisks (*pS1 Fig for LipidTOX quantifications.</p
This study presents general information about companies avaliable in the Turkish law and analyzes profit distribution and taxation of profit share in capital companies under the Low of Obligations, Turkish Trade Code, Capital Market Code, Tax Procedure Law, Income Tax Law and Corporation Tax Law. A major way to prevent unemployment and inflation is investment and, therefore production; and this is best achieved with becoming a corporation. Hence, we shall spread the idea of becoming a corporation. One of the most essential factors to reach the level of developed countries is to spread the capital throughout the base, which event is possible by encouraging the incorporation of capital companies. However, every investor demands to be paid of, in other means his profit has to be larger than the profits to be gained from other investmets. Afair profit distribution, which is a complex concept, was tried to be achieved without damaging the interests of the Government and capitalists thanks to the Law numbered 4842 Regarding profit shares and taxation, which represent a considerable place in our tax legislation, the Law numbered 4842 in particular diminishes the tax burden on real persons, who gain profit share as well as other tax burdens on corporate profit. Besides, tax receivable institution was abolished and statement system was simplified. Handicaps have to be removed, provisions must be simplified and disorder of implementation diversity at corporations must be eliminated in order to resolve the handicaps for a fair profit distribution and taxation of profit share. Consequently, policies on a daily basis shall be abandoned and legal studies, which will be in force for long years and encourage investors, shall be followed in order to develop our country. Making profit distribution attractive in companies will not only promote becoming a corporation but also contribute to keeping economical registrations
Use of Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy for the Diagnosis of Failure of Transfer of Passive Immunity and Measurement of Immunoglobulin Concentrations in Horses
Background: The economic, accurate, and rapid screening of foals for failure of transfer of passive immunity (FPT) is essential to ensure timely intervention. Hypothesis: Infrared (IR) spectroscopy of foal sera and pattern recognition may be used to diagnose FPT and quantify serum IgG. Samples: Sera from 194 foals (24–72 hours) with serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations determined previously by radial immunodiffusion assay (RID) were used. Methods: IR spectra were recorded for the serum samples, and the data were randomly divided into training and independent test sets, each containing both FPT-positive (IgG <400 mg/dL) and non-FPT samples. A genetic optimal region selection algorithm and linear discriminant analysis were used to partition the training spectra, and the resulting classifier was then validated by comparing the IR-predicted FPT status for each of the test samples to that provided by the RID IgG assay. A quantitative IR-based assay for IgG was developed using partial least squares (PLS) and validated by testing its ability to predict IgG concentrations. Results: Specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy for the combined data were 92.5, 96.8, and 95.9%, respectively. Corresponding positive (88.1%) and negative predictive (98.0%) values determined a success rate of 95–97% as compared to RID-based IgG concentrations. The IR-based quantitative assay yielded correlation coefficients for IR spectroscopy versus RID-based IgG concentrations of 0.90 and 0.86 for the training and test sets, respectively. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: The overall performance of the IR-based test was similar to that of the colorimetric assay and was superior and more economic than other available tests.Christopher B. Emerging low-carbon urban mega-projects
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Springer via the DOI in this recordThis chapter focuses on the recent trend in some geographical locations (particularly China and the United Arab Emirates) towards building large-scale low-carbon city projects. These low-carbon cities are increasingly being described as mega-projects due to their scale and involvement of large-scale experimental approaches to ways of organizing the low-carbon city. The chapter discusses some of the main trends towards the development of low-carbon eco-city projects since 2000, and then introduces the two main low-carbon city mega-projects currently being developed
The interaction of a new anti-tumour drug, KAR-2 with calmodulin
1 KAR-2 (3 ''-(beta-chloroethyl)-2 '',4 ''-dioxo-3,5 ''-spiro-oxazolidino-4-deacetoxy-vinblastine) is a semisynthetic bis-indol derivative, with high anti-microtubular and anti-tumour activities but with low toxicity. KAR-2, in contrast to other biologically active bis-indols (e.g. vinblastine), did not show anti-calmodulin activity in vitro (enzyme kinetic, fluorescence anisotropy and immunological tests). 2 Direct binding studies (fluorescence resonance energy transfer, circular dichroism) provided evidence for the binding of KAR-2 to calmodulin. The binding affinity of KAR-2 to calmodulin (dissociation constant was about 5 mu M) in the presence of Ca2+ was comparable to that of vinblastine. 3 KAR-2 was able to interact with apo-calmodulin as well; in the absence of Ca2+ the binding was of cooperative nature. 4 The effect of drugs on Ca2+ homeostasis in human neutrophil cells was investigated by means of a specific fluorescent probe. Trifluoperazine extensively inhibited the elevation of intracellular Ca2+ level, vinblastine did not appreciably affect it, KAR-2 stimulated the Ca2+ influx and after a transient enhancement the Ca2+ concentration reached a new steady-state level. 5 Comparison of the data obtained with KAR-2 and bis-indols used in chemotherapy suggests that the lack of anti-calmodulin potency resides on the spiro-oxazolidino portion of KAR-2. This character of KAR-2 manifested itself in various systems and might result in its low in vivo toxicity, established in an anti-tumour test
