Prize Sharing in Collective Contests
The characteristics of endogenously determined sharing rules and the group-size paradox are studied in a model of group contest with the following features: (i) The prize has mixed private-public good characteristics. (ii) Groups can differ in marginal cost of effort and their membership size. (iii) In each group the members decide how much effort to put without observing the sharing rules of the other groups. It is shown that endogenous determination of group sharing rules completely eliminates the group-size paradox, i.e. a larger group always attains a higher winning probability than a smaller group, unless the prize is purely private. In addition, an interesting pattern of equilibrium group sharing rules is revealed: the group attaining the lower winning probability is the one choosing the rule giving higher incentives to the members.collective contest, mixed public-good prize, endogenous sharing rules, the group-size paradox
The Age of HATOYAMA Haruko and Kaoru : Focusing on their Home Economics in Modern Japan
This paper attempts to clarify the works and life of HATOYAMA Haruko(1863-1938) and her daughter-in-law, Kaoru(1888-1982). They had been the president and chief director of Kyoritsu Women’s Educational Institution. Haruko was mother of Hatoyama Ichiro(1883-1959), who became the Prime Minister in 1954. Haruko was one of the pioneers of home economics, which rose in the Meiji period, and tried to bring up students at Kyoritsu to be “good wives and wise mothers”. Kaoru helped Ichiro’s political activities in spite of his adversity and illness. Haruko and Kaoru published together the Home Economics (Kasei) in 1917, which became one of the best sellers in modern Japan. Haruko wrote 10 chapters on the marrige and family life, and Kaoru wrote 6 chapters on household economy. It was remarkable that Haruko spared 2 chapters for husbands though they rarely read this sort of book then. Haruko warned husbands to keep their chastity and inducted wives into the way to overcome their worry and sorrow caused by misconduct of their husbands. Acutually, her bitter experience influenced this book. Therefore, Kasei became one of the women’s favorite books. Women in modern Japan shared similar problems.departmental bulletin pape
Ueda Kaoru's Idea of Social Studies Education
P(論文)The Japanese defeat in the Japan-U.S. war on August 15, 1945 brought a big change for Japanese education. That is a democratization and the peaceful justification of the education by the occupation army. As a result of the reform, the social studies were born. Kaoru Ueda was a central person to elaborate a plan of social studies in the education ministry in those days. In Kaoru Ueda the purpose of the social studies education as an aim of new education to establish Japanese democracy was to bring up an independent human being who takes responsibility, thinks by oneself and acts in the relations of the mutual aid. Especially, he intends that the social studies bring manners as a good member of society and the ability of the child, and the social studies that he thinks about are interpreted as a subject of the child priority principle to respect the interest of the child. In addition, as for the method of social studies, the learning method for a child to solve a problem freely and voluntarily is thought about in Ueda, and a unit learning to respect the independence of will of the child and a teacher is adopted as a concrete method. By this leading idea of Ueda, there were the social studies as a symbolic education subject of the post-war Japanese educational reform until Showa the latter half of 20's. However, the Japanese education policy and the social studies were changed in quality by the conservative politics that revived under the international situation of Japan-U.S. peace treaty, and moral education, the so-called in other words "hour for morality" was specially set up and was required from September 1.1958(showa 33). This specially set up "hour for morality" was fixed at a set time once a week and the specially installed moral education was isolated from not only the moral education but also the education such as social studies and extracurricular activities, the homeroom brought a tendency to fall into a one-side education which injected an item of virtue. To inject an item of virtue was opposed to social studies education of Ueda that intended learning through an experience of the self in one's own interest of free learning. In conclusion, the loss of the origin of the postwar democracy education, and the change in quality of the moral education disturbed the formation of the independently individual and the democratization of japan including such social studies up to today. I think that it makes the Japanese democratization incomplete and picks the bud of democracy.departmental bulletin pape
A successful model of regional healthcare information exchange in Japan: Case Study in Kagawa Prefecture
In this study, we focused on analysis of healthcare data exchange over the network. For the advance of broadband capability development, many governments expect online medical information exchange between medical institutions. Japanese government also has tried to deploy ICT in the healthcare field. In Japan, many healthcare ICT projects started, but almost of all the projects face many issues and failed to continue. This situation caused us to clarify the success factor of healthcare information exchange network. For inspecting the success factors, we analyzed information access of healthcare systems in Kagawa prefecture of Japan. Kagawa prefecture is one of the most advance areas for healthcare information technology. We analyzed four medical ICT projects in Kagawa prefecture: K-MIX, Critical Pathway for Diabetes, E-prescription, and PHR. In addition, we inspected characteristics of exchanged data in the network, and stakeholder involved in these projects. This analysis lets us find various types of healthcare ICT projects. Characteristic of data processed in the projects caused differences of characteristic of the projects. On the other hand, multiple systems process same data, though the project does not share the data itself. Considering various types of medical information exchanges projects, we propose classification and standard format of exchanged data according to their characteristic are critical for efficient business deployment. --e-Health,regional healthcare information exchange,EHR
