Waring’s theorem for binary powers
Full text linkA natural number is a binary k’ th power if its binary representation consists of k consecutive identical blocks. We prove, using tools from combinatorics, linear algebra, and number theory, an analogue of Waring’s theorem for sums of binary k’th powers. More precisely, we show that for each integer k> 2, there exists an effectively computable natural number n such that every sufficiently large multiple of Ek:=gcd(2k - 1,k) is the sum of at most n binary k’th powers. (The hypothesis of being a multiple of Ek cannot be omitted, since we show that the gcd of the binary k’th powers is Ek.) Furthermore, we show that n = 2O(k3). Analogous results hold for arbitrary integer bases b>2

Asymptotic Nusselt numbers for internal flow in the Cassie state
No full textWe consider laminar, fully developed, Poiseuille flows of liquid in the Cassie state through diabatic, parallel-plate microchannels symmetrically textured with isoflux ridges. Via matched asymptotic expansions, we develop expressions for (apparent hydrodynamic) slip lengths and Nusselt numbers. Our small parameter is the pitch of the ridges divided by the height of the microchannel. When the ridges are oriented parallel to the flow, we quantify the error in the Nusselt number expressions in the literature and provide a new closed-form result. It is accurate to and valid for any solid (ridge) fraction, whereas previous ones are accurate to and breakdown in the important limit when the solid fraction approaches zero. When the ridges are oriented transverse to the (periodically fully developed) flow, the error associated with neglecting inertial effects in the slip length is shown to be, where is the channel-scale Reynolds number based on its hydraulic diameter. The corresponding Nusselt number expressions' accuracies are shown to depend on the Reynolds number, Péclet number and Prandtl number in addition to. Manipulating the solution to the inner temperature problem encountered in the vicinity of the ridges shows that classic results for the thermal spreading resistance are better expressed in terms of polylogarithm functions.</p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
