A critical analysis of selected literary techniques in P.T. Mtuze’s prose narratives

    No full text
The main purpose of this study is to provide a critical analysis of selected literary techniques in P.T. Mtuze’s prose narratives. This study seeks to analyse his style of writing in all his texts. The aspects of his style under stylistic techniques and criticism will serve as a foundation theory that will link the study to the analysis of definitions and referencing under imagery and its aspects; including humour, satire, idioms, proverbs, literary techniques, and figures of speech. Mtuze is noted as one of the most prolific writers due to his ingenuity in language skills, especially in isiXhosa. Mtuze is one of the best humoristic writers; hence he is popular due to applying humour in the prose works he wrote. This study is divided into seven chapters, and the theory which is used for this study is also scrutinised in order to get a sense of what the author intended to deliver through his texts

This study uses empirical juridical method where research with a view to legal provisions in practice. This study concerns the basic factors underlying the onset of any breach of the principle of utmost good faith in the insurance agreement as well as how the settlement and legal consequences of the breach of the principle of utmost good faith in the contract of insurance. The author uses the qualitative data  analysis to make an assessment of data that authors get on the field with the help of literatures related research. Based on the research that earned the author the P.T. Asuransi Jiwasraya (Persero) Padang Branch that the factors underlying the violation of the principle of utmost good faith can be caused by internal factors (the insurer) is an insurance agent and risk selectors (underwriter) and external factors i.e. insured parties. Violation of the dishonest agents caused the insurer gives a description of the products offered to the prospective insured because only the pursuit of targets and commissions, vice versa the insured provides false information when responding to a question from the insurer. Completion of the offence principle of utmost good faith this is done first by deliberation, if agreement was not reached will proceed through court proceedings. As a result of legal violations of principle of utmost good faith is the insurance agreement void or in other words the insurer has no duty to indemnify if the claims of the insured object

Transparency and Reliability in the Data Supply Chain

Linked data is enabling the creation of large-scale distributed data supply chains. However, it's often unclear where the information these supply chains produce originates. Unlike coffee, we don't have a fair trade certificate for data. Here, the author outlines how standards and research in data provenance are leading toward 'fair trade' data. © 1997-2012 IEEE

The Art of Money Getting or Golden Rules for Making Money

P.T. Barnum's autobiography, "The Life of P.T. Barnum," details his rise from humble beginnings in Connecticut to becoming a world-renowned showman. Barnum began his career by exhibiting Joice Heth, a woman he sensationally claimed was 161 years old and the former nurse of George Washington , proving his talent for advertising and "humbug". In 1841, he acquired the American Museum in New York City , transforming it into a premier entertainment venue with curiosities like the "Feejee Mermaid" (a hoax) and "General Tom Thumb," a dwarf whom he turned into an international celebrity. He toured Europe with Tom Thumb, even presenting him to Queen Victoria. His largest and most successful venture was bringing the "Swedish Nightingale," singer Jenny Lind, to America in 1850. Despite having never heard her sing , Barnum's masterful publicity campaign created a national "Lind Mania," resulting in immense profits and cementing his fame.P.T. Barnum'un "The Life of P.T. Barnum" (P.T.

Selective storage of magnetization in strongly relaxing spin systems

    No full text
We have investigated the use of a “split-sinc” RF pulse to selectively store magnetization from a selected region of a sample, for later recall in imaging or spectroscopy experiments. The pulse sequence is based on an original suggestion by Post et al. (West German Patent No. P3209263.6, 13 March 1982), later implemented by Aue et al. (J. Magn. Reson.56, 350 (1984)). We have carried out detailed numerical calculations using the Bloch equations and show that this particular sequence is robust in the face of strong transverse relaxation, and we demonstrate its application to imaging of polymer samples in shearing and extensional flow cells

Application of mid-infrared spectroscopy for rapid characterization of key soil properties for engineering land use

    No full text
AbstractMethods for rapid and accurate soil tests are needed for the index properties of material attributes commonly applied in civil engineering. We tested the application of mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy for the rapid characterization of selected key stability-related soil properties. Two sample sets, representing different soils from across Lake Victoria basin in Kenya, were used for the study: A model calibration set (n=135) was obtained following a conditioned Latin hypercube sampling, and a validation set (n=120) was obtained from independent sites using a spatially stratified random sampling strategy. Air-dried ground (<0.5mm) soil was scanned using a high-throughput screening accessory for diffuse reflectance attached to a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The soil properties were calibrated to smoothed first derivative MIR spectra using partial least-square regression (PLS), and screening tests were developed for various limitation classes applicable in civil works using the soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA). The hold-out full cross-validation coefficient of determination (r2)≥0.8 was obtained for the liquid limit (LL), linear shrinkage (LS), coefficient of linear extensibility (COLE), air-dried moisture content, (W) and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Further independent validation gave r2≥0.73 and the ratio of prediction deviation (RPD) 4.4–2.1 for LL, LS, COLE, W, CEC, plastic limit (PL), plasticity index (PI), and volumetric shrinkage (VS). The independent validation likelihood ratios for the diagnostic screening tests were: LL>55%, 4.2; PI>30%, 2.7; LS>12%, 2.4; exchangeable sodium (eNa)>2cmol (+) kg−1, 2.3; exchangeable sodium percent (ESP)>10%, 1.8; W>8.3%, 1.6, and Activity number (A)>1.25units, 1.5. MIR can provide the rapid assessment of several soil properties that yield stability indices in material testing for engineering land use. Further studies should test the ability of MIR PLS for establishing broader calibrations across more diverse soil types and the direct correlation of MIR to material functional attributes
