Integrating faith and knowledge: Kamal Hassan’s legacy at IIUM
No full textAs one of the leading Muslim scholars of his time, in the early 80s, Mohd Kamal Hassan was appointed by the government of Malaysia to develop a concept for a contemporary Muslim institution of higher learning in Malaysia. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, wanted such an academia to be international, which would make it appealing to the global community. Kamal Hassan, who was well-known for his balanced and comprehensive understanding of Islam, managed to make Mahathir’s dream a reality.
Deeply rooted in spirituality and philosophy, Kamal Hassan was able to establish a modern Islamic centre for learning which had a strong foundation in Islamic Tawhidic epistemology, which places much emphasis on the God-centeredness of life, man as the Khalifah of Allah, Islamic moral values, man’s good relationship with nature, and fellow human beings. His idea of Islam as a holistic philosophy of life shaped the university's vision, mission, and its efforts in promoting peace and harmony within the Muslim Ummah and the world at large.
Kamal Hassan remained deeply involved in the university's development throughout his life, until his last breath on 23rd February 2023. As a visionary Muslim scholar, he recognized that a sound spiritual and moral foundation is an essential element needed for personal development alongside academic growth. His collaboration with AbdulHamid AbuSulayman, IIUM's second rector, further solidified the university's unique position in higher education.
Kamal Hassan's views on the role of spirituality in education, his holistic approach to student development, and all his other efforts made the International Islamic University Malaysia one of the outstanding Islamic universities in the world

Known for his balanced and comprehensive grasp of Islam, Kamal Hassan conceptualized IIUM with a robust philosophical, epistemological, and ideological foundation. His vision framed Islam as a holistic way of life, shaping the university’s mission to promote peace and harmony within the Muslim community and beyond.

The stadium for a team is very important because that's where the supporters can see and enjoy directly, as well as in Jepara the Kamal Junaidi Stadium must be used again for official professional matches. The method used by the author in this research is observation, literature study and comparative study. The planning and redesign of Kamal Junaidi Stadium will be adjusted to national standards, because later Kamal Junaidi Stadium will be used for national matches. Kamal Junaidi Stadium apart from being the home object of Persijap Jepara, this stadium can be rented for football matches from anywhere. According to the author's observations from the three aspects of the after-occupation evaluation at the Kamal Junaidi Stadium, Jepara, there were several problems related to behavioral, functional, and technical aspects. Problems that arise can be solved by renovating the stadium. The renovations included structural, architectural and mechanical fields so as to make Kamal Junaidi Stadium Jepara able to hold matches on a national scale

Full text linkAhsan Kamal is Lecturer in Pakistan Studies at the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, teaching courses in research methods, social theory, social movements and water politics. They work with activists and communities on issues of land and water commons in Pakistan. Their PhD dissertation in Sociology was written on the death and defence of the Indus River in Pakistan. One of their most recent publications, co-authored with Christopher Courtheyn, is “Research as Action and Performance. Learning with Activists in Resource Conflicts”, published in 2021 in The Routledge Handbook of Critical Resource Geography.
