Reikšminiai žodžiai: Sovietmetis; Sovietinė literatūra; Rašytojai; Socialistinis realizmas; CenzūraThe author of this chapter seeks to describe and analyze the situation of Lithuanian literature of the first decade of the Soviet period (1940-1950) within official, public space. He devotes most of his attention to representations of a “bright” communist future that were dictated by the Communist Party and other Soviet state institutions. Various government authorities continuously stressed the political role of the author: to efficiently produce activist texts in prose or verse, regardless of their artistic merit - it was only crucial that they passionately promote socialism. Afraid of persecution and wanting to publish, or motivated by other reasons, writers succumbed to these demands. Kalėdas’s textual analysis focuses on the representative two-volume anthology Tarybinė lietuvių poezija. 1940-1950 (Soviet Lithuanian Poetry. 1940-1950) and Tarybinė lietuvių proza. 1940-1950 (Soviet Lithuanian Prose. 1940-1950). The poetry volume contains works by 29 authors, the prose volume the texts of works by 28 writers of different generations. As most of the texts operate according to a repertoire of common stylistic cliches, claims, and epithets, it is difficult to discern any distinct individual differences among them. It is like a collective creative work complied from rather disparate texts, as though the editors’ main priority was to fill the anthology pages with any kind of material as long as it created at least the slightest illusion of literature. The chapter’s author also offers a focused analysis of the mechanisms of manipulation in the prose of one of the most famous of the Soviet-era writers, Juozas Baltušis (1909-1919), showing how, during the first post-war decade, Soviet Lithuanian literature was wrenched from its national roots and forced to meet propagandist demands

'This model of identity had already been formed in the literature of the Great Lithuanian Kingdom, reached its peak in the literature of romanticism, especially, in Adam Mickiewicz works. Evolution of the topos in the XX century took place among dramatic disputes between the two nations; it was characterized by the transformations of tradition and procedures of demythologization. The identity model has manifested itselfindividually in the works of Czesław Miłosza, Tadeusz Konwicki and other outstanding writers associated with Lithuania

Modifications of genres in prose by Icchokas Meras

Straipsnyje taip pat glaustai aptariama šių populiarių romanų interpretacija literatūrologijos ir kritikos veikaluoseThe aim of the article is to reveal the unique nature of the novel structure – especially their communicative features – in writings of a famous Lithuanian writer, now residing in Israel. Meras introduced into the Lithuanian prose a very suggestive manner of narration, based on modern, subjectivist narrative tools and lyric/ballad-like intonation. The author analyzes in more detail two of the most typical works, standing out for original discourses and semantics: “Lygiosios trunka akimirką” [A tie lasts an eye-blink] (1963) and “Striptizas” [The striptease] (1976). Meras modifies the model of a novel by employing possibilities posed by a range of diverse language tools, also, by intermittently applying epic, dramatic, and lyrical discourses. Next to intellectual introspection, the works come to exhibit a very important state of empathy (emphasis) and aspiration to open up into the other (to peruse E. Levinas’ terminology). The author communicates with the addressee on various levels; in this respect the story also performs an auto-therapeutic function. The conclusion is drawn that communicative modifications of Meras’ novels, their unique character and syncretic genre (genres mixtes) are largely determined by the author’s individual disposition and the topics of these novels: 1) the world of a Jewish ghetto during the Second World War, depicted in symbols and mythologemes, holocaust topic; and 2) alienation of artist’s consciousness upon entering a spiritual crisis in the contemporary world. The article also shortly discusses interpretations of these popular novels found in literary and critical writings

Pecularities of narration in the novel "Sacred Lithuania"

Menkai nagrinėtas, beveik užmirštas Jurgio Savickio romanas „Šventoji Lietuva“ parašytas tremtyje 1952 m. Straipsnio pagrindiniai objektai – romano struktūra, originalumas ir pasakojimo stilius. Romano pasakotojas nuolatos keičiasi: jis romantikas, realistas, nostalgiškas patriotas, atsiminimų autorius, ironizuotojas, satyrikas, net režisierius. Iš šių perspektyvų autorius aprašo mažo Lietuvos miestelio gyvenimą XX a. pradžioje. Galbūt todėl romaną skirtingai vertina kritikai: vieniems – tai ištęstas, be aiškios struktūros, eseistinis tekstas, kiti giria modernią, beveik postmodernią techniką, įvedant skaitytoją į kūrinio semantiką. Daroma išvada, kad J. Savickis naudoja išlavintą literatūrinę savimonę, kurdamas tam tikrą stereometrinį tekstą ir sąmoningai provokuoja įvairias skaitytojo interpretacijas. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Jurgis Savickis; Kaukės; Lietuvių romanas; Literatūros estetika; Modernizmas; Pasakotojas; Stilizacija; Struktūra; „Šventoji Lietuva“; Jurgis Savickis; Literary aesthetics; Lithuanian novel; Masks; Modernism; Narrator; Structure; Stylisation; „Sacred Lithuania“The poorly analysed, almost forgotten novel by Jurgis Savickis Sacred Lithuania was written in exile in 1952. Its structure, originality and narrative style are the main subjects of this article. The narrator of this novel puts on various masks: he presents himself as a romantic, a realist, a nostalgic patriot, an author of memoirs, an ironist, a satirist, a filmmaker. From these various perspectives he writes about the life of a small Lithuanian town in the beginning of the 20th century. The strategy of narration is based on reader's knowledge, and his ability to recognize hints, stylisations and relations with other cultural and literary texts. On the other hand, a less educated reader who doesn't identify the playful inter textual level of meanings reads the novel as an idyllic love story, filled with quaint intrigues. Maybe this is the reason for various evaluations of this novel by critics: some of them treat it as a long-winded, unstructured, essayistic text, while others praise it for its modern, almost post modern technique of including the reader into the semantic of the literary work. The article concludes that Savickis uses his developed literary consciousness to create a certain stereo metrical text and deliberately provokes diverse interpretations from the reader

He rejects means of expression that are admired by the ordinary reader, and does not aim to intrigue the readership with popular versions of typical plots. The postmodern attitudes which literary critics observe in his work emerge not from following literary fashion, but rather from a deep knowledge of world literature, and a personal approach to his creative work. Reading his books, it often seems that Kasparavičius focuses more on the writing process, the ability of the imagination to embrace the world’s controversial diversity, and not on a way of creating an aesthetic effect

    Julijono Lindės-Dobilo inspiracijos

Julijonas Lindė-Dobilas paprastai traktuojamas kaip „vieno kūrinio“ („Blūdas“) autorius. Tačiau rašytojas-mąstytojas įvairiais būdais turtino ir skatino pirmųjų XX a. dešimtmečių lietuvių meninio žodžio plėtrą, stimuliavo tarpukario estetinę mintį. J. Lindės-Dobilo akiratyje didieji Europos meno, estetikos reiškiniai be ypatingų kolizijų derinasi su akcentuotais tautiškumo variantais; įvairias lietuvybės apraiškas jis projektuoja į universaliuosius meno kontekstus. Rašytojas mokėjo įžvalgiai atskleisti fenomenalius A. Strazdo, A. Baranausko, A. Vienažindžio, V. Krėvės, V. Kudirkos, Vydūno, Vaižganto ir kt. kūrybos ypatumus, be nevisavertiškumo komplekso regėdamas juos vienoje gretoje su įžymiaisiais visų laikų kūrėjais. Vaisingiausias atrodo J. Lindės-Dobilo siekimas parodyti A. Mickevičiaus kultūrinį artimumą kūrėjams. Poeto kūrybos fenomeną J. Lindė-Dobilas suvokia kaip gilių asmenybės išgyvenimų, lietuviškos pasaulėjautos išraiškos ir europietiškos meninės kultūros sintezę. Ypač dažnai J. Lindė-Dobilas gręžiasi į romantikų pamėgtą meilės topiką, kurią interpretuoja originaliais rakursais, leidžiančiais iškelti naujus A. Mickevičiaus kūrinių ypatumus. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Adomas Mickevičius (Adam Mickiewicz); Rašytojai; Idealizmas; Julijonas Lindė-Dobilas; Literatūros teorija; Literatūros teorija ir kritika; Vakarų kultūra; Adam Mickiewicz; Bludas; Fallacy; Julijonas Lindė-Dobilas; Literary theory and criticism; Theory of Literature; Western CultureJulijonas Lindė-Dobilas is typically treated as the author of a “single work” (“Blūdas”). However, the writer-philosopher enriched and promoted in various ways the development of the Lithuanian word of art of the first decades of the 20th c. and stimulated the interwar aesthetic thought. For Lindė-Dobilas the major phenomena of European art and aesthetics fit the emphasised variants of nationality without particular collisions; he projects various manifestations of Lithuanianness into universal art contexts. This intellectual-spiritual penetration into the layers of eternal artistry is one of the most inspiring reverberations of his heritage in the current divided literary consciousness. Those elements of the writer’s heritage that are related to methodological procedures, reflect universal aesthetic solutions and belong to wider paradigms of Lithuanian literature and literary philosophy are today most valuable. The writer was able to perceptively reveal the phenomenal peculiarities of the works of Strazdas, Baranauskas, Vienažindys, Krėvė, Kudirka, Vydūnas, Vaižgantas, and others, putting them in line with the all-time prominent creators without any inferiority complex. Lindė-Dobilas’ attempt to show Mickiewicz’ cultural proximity to creators seems to be most fruitful. He perceives the poet’s creation phenomenon as the synthesis of deep experiences of a personality, expression of Lithuanian world-view and European art culture. Lindė-Dobilas very often turns to the topic of love favoured by romanticists, which he interprets from the original aspects that point out new peculiarities of Mickiewicz’ works

Based on the fragments observed in Czesław Miłosz’s poetry, prose and essays, the paper analyses the spread of tree and generally floral images and their variants in the writer’s works. The paper aims to reveal the ontological and artistic status of nature, tree and flora, and to answer whether these images are the autonomic sphere existing beyond the subject and holding an individual existential status or whether they function only as symbolical equivalents of human experiences. The analysis of Miłosz’s works reveals that the author of “Dolina Issy” [The Issa Valley] treats flora from many perspectives: as the source of individual and subjective experiences, which is mysterious and versatile, yet reached through instantaneous enlightenments, relying on intuition; as the essential and divine sphere of universe and existence, objectively existing individual ontological whole; as an inseparable member of the life of an individual, community, nation, a participant of changes and perturbations; as a witness and actor of history and passing time. Such a wide and iridescent repertoire of the meaning of plants creates many artistic variants in Miłosz’s works and radiates a set of subjective connotations. The paper explores the questions related to the created/recreated/undergoing creation semantics of individual world, in which Miłosz revives, along with prioritised personal impressions, the images of wood/tree created and established in the community culture. Besides the subjective flora connotations, Miłosz sought to originally reflect wider, archetypal layers of tree semantics – both biblical and ethnic

Kunčinas depicts love peripeteias, representatives of the bohema, becoming a personality, rallies at Soviet stereotypes, considers creative issues and talks about falls and raises. According to their ontological state, characters in the novel are typical outsiders who function in the margins of the society. The style of the text is rich with (auto)irony, sarcastic descriptions, parallels and sharp comparisons. However, at the same time the characters of Kunčinas are personified and function as symptoms-witnesses of the environment and as a hypostasis of certain social and psychological states. Kunčinas' novel lacks order. The mess is primarily supposed by many analepses, digressions and turns from the main axis. In this case, the order of the novel may be treated as an expression of senses, attitudes and states of the narrator. The writer sees the surrounding world as a media for fantasy which is used to selectively make new phenomena. Accordingly he behaves with the main elements of narration, the language itself; in this way the time and space is formed and the composition is shaped – it is not projected, it is composed of fragmentary images. This influences the text's (in)cohesiveness, its structure's flexibility and kaleidoscopicity. This kind of depiction strategy is reflected by the structure of the novel. It seems that the author attempts to create an attitude that the course of events in the novel may be influenced by anyone and anywhere, and he just creates literature that may be applied by literature scientists to selected methodological theories

His creative output is approached as a suggestive poetical phenomenon distinguished for its complex artistic expression. Considerable attention is paid to the place of Platelis’ work in the development of new Lithuanian literature (within the period from about 1980 to 2015), its contexts, connections, and parallels with Lithuanian and global literature and culture. The author of this book aims to discuss Platelis’ poetry and essay writing not just as a separate phenomenon but also as one that is closely associated with wider creative spaces. This primarily concerns connections with the writers of his own generation, with their artistic idiolects and their poetic variants, as well as with his own environment and the period of his own lifetime. Such a method of analysis has been determined by the poet’s constant focus on cultural reflection, philosophical contemplation, and on the ontological and existential aspects of existence. [...] Analysis of Platelis’ work is supported by a considerable number of oeuvres of contemporary literary historians and introspections by such scholars and authors as Vytautas Kubilius, Viktorija Daujotytė, Kęstutis Nastopka, Rita Tūtlytė, Dalia Satkauskytė, Audinga Peluritytė, Eugenijus Ališanka, Laurynas Katkus, and others. [...] Platelis debuted in 1980 with the collection Žodžiai ir dienos (Words and Days). The title bears intentional similarity to Works and Days by the Greek classical poet Hesiod. The literary community promptly appreciated the book as an individual artistic phenomenon highly original in the context of the literature of that time. [...] It should be stressed that Platelis embarked on his creative path during the years of the Soviet occupation when not only Lithuanian culture, but the whole nation was affected by totalitarian oppression and ideological indoctrination.[...] Openness to classical and Western culture and literature, and attitudes of resistance against the Soviet authorities are prominent in Platelis’ other books written during the Soviet period, that is, before 1990, when Lithuania became independent again: Namai ant tilto (House on a Bridge, 1984) and Pinklės vėjui (Snare for the Wind, tr. Jonas Zdanys). [...] A multi-aspect semantic structure is a trait inherent in Platelis’ poetry and in his narrative poems. Recurring plots, motifs, and images hide their ‘secret compartment’ under traditional and conventional layers of meaning, and in order to recognize it one must possess not only the skill of interpretation, but also a considerable baggage of cultural information. [...] In his works Platelis models a multi-level communication structure with corresponding polyphonic discourse that makes a parallel switching of several points of view possible. The lyrical subject appeals to the addressee under different guises: he exposes not only the roles of an ingenuous poeta doctus, a thinker philosopher, a confessor of Buddhism, and of a classical personage, but also those of a gourmand, an aesthete, a snob, and of a confused dupe. [...] Alongside the solemn, pompous, polyphonic, intellectual, and prosaic discourse, the dispersion of Platelis’ irony appears original and embraces several semantic planes. On the one hand, the contesting aspects of mockery are representative of the poet, because they allow him to critically reflect on the surrounding social existence and the absurdities of life. Furthermore, he has mastered, to perfection, the expression of existential, Socratian irony based on a vast diversity of modulations [...]. Platelis’ artistic world is permeated with vitalizing energy such as water, other liquids and sap, which impart life and sustain it, and should therefore be linked with vital foundations of life. [...] The neoclassical aura of discourse with emphatically ornamented predicates and transparent euphemisms facilitate the creation of the sacral act of universal love. Multicultural images are entwined with individual experiences and impressions, and a work resembles a polylogue because it speaks as if on several planes of meanings. [...] Analysis of the poet’s work presented in this study makes it possible to reconstruct - at least to some extent - this original artistic world. Its coordinates can be defined as a symbiosis of the Apollonian and Dionysian beginnings, or, in other words, as a fusion of harmony and intellect, of spontaneity and the somatic element. Kornelijus Platelis was a vice-minister for culture and education (1991-1993) and a minister for education and research (1998-2000). For a couple of years he headed the Vaga Publishers, and from 2001 to 2013 he was the chief editor of the cultural weekly Literatūra ir menas (Literature and Art). Platelis has occupied important positions at the Lithuanian Writers’ Union and other associations of writers and cultural workers. He is the founder and one of the main organizers of the well-known international literary forum Poetinis Druskininkų ruduo (Druskininkai Poetic Fall). The poet is a holder of numerous literary prizes and awards and a laureate of quite a number of significant literary events, such as, for example, Poezijos pavasaris (The Spring of Poetry). In 2002, he was awarded the National Culture and Arts Prize
