A Quantitative Study of the Paratexts in Erasmus-Froben Imprints
No full textWe study the paratexts in Erasmus’ imprints with Johann then Hieronymus Froben of Basel between 1514 and 1536. From Valentina Sebastiani’s bibliography of Johann Froben we observe that Erasmus was a more abundant paratexter than other authors who published with Johann Froben. We supplement that work with a bibliography of Erasmus’ imprints with Hieronymus Froben. We note trends across the Erasmus-Froben corpus, including: a remarkable number of imprints, equally balanced between new editions and re-editions, abundant dedications without correlation to format, indexes in folio volumes especially, a growing attention to errata lists over time. These patterns shed light on one author-printer partnership but also on more general trends in learned publishing in the early 16th century.HistoryAccepted Manuscrip

No full textThe original version of this Article contained an error in Table 4, in which the coefficients of the LASSO regression model of treatment response corresponded to a version that was performed without non-coding genes. The new version of the table, which was generated during revision of the manuscript, contains the coefficients that were obtained after including potential non-coding driver genes in the model. Genomic features that became statistically significant after re-running the model were also added, which included: ‘nr of 10 kb–1Mb deletions’, ‘SBS41’, ‘Non-coding - LINC00672’, ‘Gain 7p12.3 - (PKD1L1)’, ‘Loss 4q22.1 - (CCSER1)’, and ‘Loss 18q23 - (NFATC1*)’. The Iconic Value of Infrastructure Projects: A case study to the iconic value of the Erasmus Bridge
No full textThis study aims to provide insight in the iconic value of infrastructure projects by measuring the iconic value of the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. This study was motivated by the lack of insight in iconic value in the appraisal of infrastructure projects aspiring to become iconic artifacts in Cost-Benefit Analysis. We designed a contingent valuation experiment, with two contingent scenarios and two respondent samples. One sample representing the inhabitants of the city of Rotterdam and one sample representing the inhabitants of the Netherlands excluding the inhabitants of Rotterdam. For both respondent samples significant (from zero) WTP estimates were found. Furthermore, people who virtually never use the Erasmus Bridge for transportation goals, or even see the Erasmus Bridge still have a WTP for the iconic value of the Erasmus Bridge. Allowing for uncertainties we estimated a lower bound and an upper bound for the total WTP for the iconic value of the Erasmus Bridge for inhabitants of the Netherlands. Regardless if we choose the lower bound (69.7 million euros) or the upper bound (95.7 million euros) the iconic value of the Erasmus Bridge is higher than the extra costs made in reality to build the Erasmus Bridge instead of a more conservative design (18 million euros). Hence, it can be concluded that the iconic value of infrastructure projects can be substantial, at least in the case of the Erasmus Bridge. Liberal Education in the Erasmus Programme
No full textIn this essay the author explores the ideals and realities of the Erasmus Programme. His starting point is the educational vision of Sofia Corradi, an Italian educator who was instrumental in getting the Erasmus project off the ground in the 1980s. If we hold on to her thoughts about liberal education, culture, peace and social justice, the programme design immediately makes good sense. From this perspective, however, we may come to see Bologna as a process that undermines the Erasmus Programme. We may also come to wonder if Erasmus of Rotterdam really is a good patron of the programme. The Author suggests the cultural philosophy of J.G. Herder may provide a better philosophical grounding for Corradi's education thought. Finally, he argues that Corradi's vision for Erasmus has one significant flaw: it is too optimistic about our ability to learn from travelling. For that reason, the current institutional means do not quite suffice to achieve her admirable educational ends. There is more work to be done
