The factors determining assemblage structure act at different scales, with heterogeneity dominant at the local scale. In Amazonia, such heterogeneity is represented by the different forest types of the region, which provide a great diversity of shelter and food for animal species. Recent changes in Brazilian environmental legislation have put at risk the maintenance of habitat heterogeneity by favoring the suppression of several types of vegetation, notably those in riparian zones. Several Amazonian animal groups have close ecological ties to the presence of water bodies and the environmental gradients provided by them. To understand ecological relationships between species and their environment, model organisms such as lizards are widely used because they are sensitive to environmental changes and because of their success in occupying different habitat types. In this study, an assemblage of lizard species was characterized in terms of distribution and association using biological variables relevant to the group. Twenty species distributed in 10 families were studied. At the scale used in this study, multiple regression models did not indicate a significant effect of environmental variables. However, the riparian zone exerted a strong influence on the species composition and piecewise regression estimated its use to be some 211 m. Several species occurred only in the riparian zone. Our results demonstrate that the current environmental legislation in the country is not adequate to cover the observed variation in habitat use by Amazonian lizards.
Ecological studies with standardized sampling conducted on a large scale can provide an
understanding of patterns and processes hitherto unknown in the structuring of megadiverse
assemblages such as those from the Neotropics. In this thesis we present an analysis based on
multiple sampling sites installed along a transect of approximately 1,000 km, in the Purus-
Madeira interfluve and on the banks of the Upper Madeira River, in order to understand the
distribution of the lizard assemblages of this region. In the first chapter we characterized the
composition and abundance of the lizard assemblage in 10 sampling modules along the BR-
319 highway. We counted 25 taxa belonging to eight families, distributed heterogeneously
along the interfluve. We also we emphasize the importance of faunal surveys for future
conservation measures of the species of lizards of interfluvial regions in face of the increasing
anthropic impact in Amazonia. In the second chapter we evaluated how the environmental
heterogeneity, mainly associated with the Open and Dense Ombrophilous Forests of the region
of the Purus-Madeira interfluve forms the lizard assemblages. For this, we quantified the
assemblies through taxonomic and functional measures in fourteen sampling modules. We
observed that environmental factors such as soil, vegetation and rainfall vary in biogeographic
scale along the interfluve and influence the pattern of occurrence of species and functional
richness of the assemblages. Thus, we detected a large-scale species substitution pattern shaped
by the influence of environmental filters. In the third chapter we investigated, at different
scales, the influence of historical and ecological factors in the structure of lizard assemblages
in the region of the upper Madeira River. For this, 83 plots were sampled along the east and
west banks of the river. At the regional level, the upper Madeira River acts as a biogeographic
barrier to 29.6% of the species. In contrast, the performance of environmental filters explains
the structure of the assemblages at a local scale. This study, which pioneered such a wide
geographic scale in the ecology of Amazonian lizards, suggests that historical and ecological
factors have hierarchical effects in determining the spatial structuring of assemblages. Such as
the present investigation, future research addressing different scales according to standardized
sampling methods promises to elucidate processes and patterns related to the heterogeneous
spatial distribution of Amazonian biodiversity.
Geographical and environmental distances influence the divergence of characters between biological populations, especially on a macro spatial scale, making it difficult to interpret the individual contribution of these predictor variables in the process of differentiation between populations. Anurans are excellent models for multi-character evolutionary studies, due to their low vagility and frequent territoriality, causing certain environmental changes to result in barriers that isolate populations. Accordingly, we propose to test the correlation of environmental and geographical distances with phenotypic and genotypic population characters in the absence of evident vicariant barriers using as a study model an Amazonian litter-frog. We tested the general hypothesis that geographic and environmental differentiations affect the variation in the morphometric, acoustic and genetic characters of Allobates sumtuosus along a latitudinal gradient at a fine spatial scale. All data sets with the exception of those involving genetic distance showed correlation. Controlling the effect of the different data sets, we observed that the geographical distance showed a greater number of correlations, with an explanatory force always greater than 60%. The geographical distance associated with the environmental distance likely shapes the acoustic characters of populations of A. sumtuosus by means of pressures on body size. This is because the climatic environmental gradient along the latitudinal gradient results in changes to the area-volume relationship of individuals, maximizing survival rate and resulting in larger body sizes at locations closer to the Equator. Consequently, the acoustic signals diverge due to variations in the organs involved in vocalization. Despite showing the presence of an intrapopulation genetic structure for this species, this structure was not associated with phenotypic variations. In summary, this study breaks down the stages of speciation in an Amazonian frog, demonstrating that environmental factors can lead to changes in the sexual signal of a litter-frog due to the variation in body size.
In the Amazon basin, the distribution of many vertebrate species is delimited by
large rivers, which are frequently considered as biogeographical barriers strongly
related to the origin and maintenance of the elevated biodiversity found in the region.
However, few are the phylogeographical investigations evaluating the effect of such
barriers on multiple classes of genotypic and phenotypic characters. To date, no
multicharacter investigation has been dedicated to a study system involving the Tapajos
River, which delimit areas of endemism in the biome. In this study we tested the
effectiveness of this river barrier in the genetic, acoustic and morphological variability
in populations of the frog Allobates tapajos (Dendrobatidae). For this, we sampled
populations throughout the known distributional range of the species on both margins of
the middle and lower sections of the river. We obtained fragments of mitochondrial
(16S) and nuclear (RAG1) genes, as well as external morphometric measurements and
advertisement call acoustic parameters of 48 individuals from six localities. While the
nuclear marker was monomorphic across the geographic distribution of A. tapajos, the
mitochondrial fragment revealed low genetic distances accompanied of high spatial
structuring, with no haplotype sharing between opposite river margins. Cladogenetic
events were concentrated on Pleistocene, epoch proposed to the establishment of the
Tapajós river drainage. Acoustic parameters diverged between river margins, a pattern
not observed in relation to the morphological markers analyzed. Additionally, there was
no correlation in the variability pattern of the different classes of characters between
them or in relation to linear geographic distance among populations. When taken
together, the set of obtained results support the current specific status of the populations
from both margins of the Tapajós River and reveal an early stage of an allopatric
speciation process related to the transposition of this riverine barrier.
bioma. Neste estudo testamos a atuação dessa barreira fluvial sobre a variabilidade
genética, acústica e morfológica em populações do anuro Allobates tapajos
(Dendrobatidae).
The Purus-Madeira Interfluve (PMI) represents one of the less known areas of Brazilian
Amazonia. Despite it is extremely threatened by anthropic actions, the knowledge about
the taxonomic identity of anurans inhabiting the PMI and the processes driving their
distribution and diversification are poorly known. The main goals of this thesis were to
investigate the hidden diversity in anurans, provide bases to ecological and conservation
studies through the description of new taxa, and illuminating the role of environment on
species distribution and diversification along the PMI. In the first chapter, we integrated
morphology, bioacoustics, and genetics to explore if there was hidden diversity in anurans
of the genus Scinax along 1000 km of landscapes in the PMI. Integrative analyses
revealed that approximately 82% of the regional richness in Scinax was unknown to
science. Results highlighted how much the PMI faunal diversity is poorly known and its
need for conservation actions. In the second chapter, we formally described the most
widely distributed new species of Scinax in the PMI and tested if its geographic
distribution and abundance were driven by environmental variables. Scinax ruberoculatus
is easily distinguished from its congeners through morphological (adults and tadpoles)
and bioacoustical characters. Differing from the predicted for aquatic breeding anurans,
its distribution and abundance along the PMI is positively driven by silt content and not
by forest structure (tree density). It is suggested that this habitat-association is driven by
the species’ reproductive needs once reproductive sites in silty soils may be less
ephemeral, favouring the survival of tadpoles of the new species. In the third chapter,
we described a new species of Scinax with distribution apparently restricted to the central
portion of PMI. Despite it is close related to species of the Scinax wandae clade, the new
species is distinguished from all other Amazonian Scinax through morphology and
colouration, as well as by the advertisement call. The species’ habitat is deeply threatened
by the anthropic pressure due to property speculation as result of the reconstruction of the
BR-319 highway. In the fourth chapter, Scinax onca was described based in specimens
from two distinct populations in the PMI, one living in dense forests and the other in open
forests. Phylogenetic analyses of the first chapter recovered these populations as
reciprocally monophyletic. Differences in colour pattern, as well as its evolutionary
relationship, led us to hypothesize that environmental gradients of the PMI may be
responsible by observed differentiation in these populations. However, data collected
along its distribution are necessary to elucidate if the observed differentiation is really influenced by environmental gradients. In the fifth chapter, we used a diminutive
terrestrial anuran (Phyzelaphryne miriamae) and widely distributed in the PMI as a model
to test if the gene flow along the landscape can be explained by the ecological gradient
hypothesis. For the first time in Amazonia, genomic landscape analyses and thousands of
single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were used to test this hypothesis. Genetic
structure analyses estimated five ancestral populations in P. miriamae. Results indicated
that the effect of environmental gradients on gene flow of the target species was
pronounced. After accounting the effect of geographic distance, the explanation of
environmental variables ranges from 24.7 % (silt content) to 30.2% (temperature
seasonality). On the other hand, geographic distance explained just 2.3–3.7% of the gene
flow. Although there is an effect of geographic distance on gene flow in P. miriamae, it
is restricted to short and long distances, being null in moderated distances.O interflúvio entre os rios Purus e Madeira (IPM) compreende uma das regiões mais
No primeiro
paisagens no IPM e áreas circunvizinhas.
No terceiro capítulo,
restrita à porção central do IPM.
No quarto capítulo,
temperatura).
